    i see two things here:

    1. maybe if you offer an insane bonus the player will still accept a backloaded deal.

    or

    2. you are able to insanely backload an offer if you are *resigning* a player already on your team.

    • I offered Long 30k in bonus. Just enough to get him to sign for 3 years.

      • make Collela a free agent and void the deal. i've thought it over briefly, and while i may regret it this season (and possibly the next), i can not commit any more bonus money to him to get him to renogotiate what the league considers a more favorable deal. gonna be a long season.

        • Are you sure??? I can't be certain, but I don't think Colella will ask for *that* much more bonus in a reneg next season. I would estimate 3-6 more.

Anyways, I'll give you until 10 pm central to decide. Call me Meredith if you want. Is that your final answer?

I would highly suggest waiting untill next year and just renegociating the contract. Take Jeffs goodwill and run with it bro.

            • i got a prompt when i offered him a $36million bonus that i wasn't able to offer higher than $34million. so if he wants another $3million what do i do then? has this ever been tested before - i'm sure you can't throw $100million bonuses around to players, renogotiating year upon year. i don't want to make him a FA, it'll set the franchise back about 5 years, but this is not a contract that should've been accepted. i never should have offered it. either way the Heroes are screwed. if i keep him and renogotiate him, we will have a player who will have roughly a $38-40million cap hit. that is ludicrous. at least if i have him released now i don't screw the team's long-term financial viability.

lesson learned. can't wait until VPI releases his new game, hopefully that has more customizationality and the commish can simply edit the contract back like you can in OOTP.

              • I did a little test. It appears Colella will want much more than I estimated (17.3 million).

Don't see any harm in sharing this. This is what he *might* ask for next season.

the fact that he would release the Heroes from the obligations of a $32million guaranteed bonus (instead of forcing me to keep him and tack on more bonus next season) is goodwill to me.

the Heroes are not going to be as competitive/aggressive as we used to be. a lot of the players i've aquired (not including Mullin) were given big bonuses to sign with us, either as free agents or as renogotiations. i don't like that. Stewart Lundquist, my awesome DT, is old, but is owed a lot of money, as is DE Joe Otey and my 11 year vet RB Larry Deason. these guys are on the older side of young, i don't like doling out these huge bonuses, i like having cap flexibility. i don't think you'll see many impact players coming to the Heroes via free agency anymore, i'm not liking this current trend of throwing insane amounts of bonus to players just to get them to sign. this is a very aggressive league, which is great, but i think in the long run if i sit back and let other people go crazy with signing bonuses i'll be able to do to them what i did to SLC.

Breaking news from Oakland is reporting that owner/GM Jave meet with wide reciever Ernest Martinez tonight and it looks as if Martinez will be resigned to a 5 year contract somewhere in the 60 million dollar range.

It's being reported that Oakland quarterback Gene Hamilton has signed a 4 year deal worth around 50 million.
Quit your crying and sign the guy already.

so the game will allow you to basically keep on renogotiating a player and just add tons and tons of bonus to his deal? i've never been in this situation before so i don't know.

in any event, there is no scenario where i would renogotiate for a deal like that. that's even worse than the situation right now. that info just confirms that keeping Collela and attempting to renogotiate would be mucho bado. this sucks for me, big time, and i will never, never forgive Jim for allowing a scenario like this to even happen.

i try to operate my team as closely to Scott Pioli (Patriots' GM) as possiblem but i'm as aggressive as Dan Snyder when it comes to aquiring those players. when a guy asks for contracts like what you gave Martinez and Hamilton, i quickly look to move them to another team. i don't like handcuffing myself to a player and don't like sacrificing future flexibility for 2 or 3 players. your way is different. i'm not saying it's worse or better, but i don't take the same "just sign him already" approach you do. your way, it can be argued, is a recipe for future catastrophe.

that's the first time i've ever used the word "catastrophe" in a sentence. ever. that just goes to show you how serious i take this.

Fair enough. I respect that. But let me ask you. If you are the owner/GM of the Colts and Peyton Manning comes up to you with one of these contracts, are you telling me that you trade him to another team? If your the owner/GM of the Patriots and Brady comes up to you with one of these contracts, you trade him to another team?

                            Think about it.

i understand. my thinking is for the kind of money it would take to sign Manning/Brady, you can afford 5 guys, minimum, if not more, of good quality. Manning/Brady are on an elite level, but it just goes back to the quesiton "is one elite HOF calibre player worth 5 Pro Bowl calibre players". i say no. ask Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Cris Carter, Ernie Banks or any of the other guys in the HOF without a ring. ask their GMs if they could go back and trade Tony Dorsett and wind up with Emmit Smith, Troy Aikman and Michael Irving and go on to win championships - would they do it. i'm sure most of them will say "well, Kelly/Marino were great, but if i can have a championship ring i would do it. what's the point of having such an elite player if it'd not gonna result in a Super Bowl ring?" by giving one player the kind of contracts you're quick to dole out, i limit myself the ability to sign solid talent in other spots, so i wind up with a top-heavy team: one uber player, but in order to have that uber player on my team i need to pay 8 scrubs to fill out the roster. i don't like that.

I see your point, but I have never actually seen it work. You may be able to make it work, it will be interesting to watch.
