Breaking news from Oakland is reporting that owner/GM Jave meet with wide reciever Ernest Martinez tonight and it looks as if Martinez will be resigned to a 5 year contract somewhere in the 60 million dollar range. People close to the organization have said that while there was trade discussion concerning Martinez, there was very little interest and Jave recieved no serious offers.
Another concern was the huge popularity of Martinez. With ticket sales already at a dismal 47,000 despite the teams consistent success and brand new stadium, the loss of Martinez would send sales plummeting and the team could not afford this with coach contracts ending next year. While this is a huge salary it also means that quarterback Gene Hamilton will continue to have 2 of the most dangerous wideouts in the game to throw to and this keeps Oakland on the map for serious IFL bowl contenders.
Regardless, we here in Oakland think this was the right decision despite the cost, and it proves that Jave will do whatever it takes to win. Jave.......thumbs up to you sir! We are glad to have you back!!
