Bryn Smith was matching Hershiser pitch for pitch in a shutout duel until he gave up a 2 run homer to Sandberg in the 7th. We scraped together runs in the 8th and 9th but Cook lost it in the 10th.
Final Score: Dodgers 3 Marlins 2 (10 Innings)




AUGUST 27TH: Marlins (58-71) At Dodgers (79-52)
Chuck Smith really labored but gave us 6 innings of 3 run ball. We trailed 3-1 when Gene Larkin blasted a three run shot in the 6th off of Pedro Martinez to take the lead. Landrum & Heredia combined to shut them out over the final three innings and we get back in the win column.

AUGUST 28TH: Marlins (59-71) At Dodgers (79-53)
Saunders pitched brilliantly, leaving after six with a 3-1 lead. Bedrosian then shit the bed, giving up 5 runs, capped by an Eric Davis grand slam and we couldn't recover as the Dodgers take 2 of 3 from us.

Heaton sucked, the bullpen sucked, Matt Williams hit 3 home runs. Yeah. Brutal way to start a homestand.

AUGUST 30TH: Marlins (59-73) Vs Giants (68-65)
Frank Tanana pitched a gem. He got in trouble in the 8th and even though our bullpen scuffled it upheld his lead as we scored just 3 but it was enough to get the win.

AUGUST 31ST: Marlins (60-73) Vs Giants (68-66)
Dave Burba shut us out. Yip. That about says it all. Lone bright spot was Bryn Smith going the distance even though he gave up 5 runs. Blech!

SEPTEMBER 1ST: Marlins (60-74) Vs Giants (69-66)
Chuck Smith gave up 4 first inning runs but settled down after that. Unfortunately we couldn't overcome the deficit.

The Yankees lead the Blue Jays by just half a game in the AL East.
The White Sox have pretty much wrapped up the AL West thanks to a 6 game Mariner losing streak.

SEPTEMBER 2ND: Marlins (60-75) Vs Rockies (48-88)
Well our offense woke up today against Steve Sparks. McGee and Goodwin each had 3 RBI. Saunders only went 5 but our expanded bullpen had little problem shutting the Rockies down as we picked up a nice win.

SEPTEMBER 2ND: INURY & ROSTER NEWS
Tom Goodwin has a sprained thumb and will likely miss the rest of the season. Rather than DL him and spend more money he'll just stay on the roster and sit out. Also, we will be expanding our rotation to add Armando Reynoso for the rest of the season to help not overwork our starters who will also have shorter leashes from here on out with the extra bullpen help.





SEPTEMBER 3RD: Marlins (61-75) Vs Rockies (48-89)
Neal Heaton pitched well but our pen scuffled and Robert Person for fug sakes was far too effective against us as we slipped back into the loss column.

SEPTEMBER 4TH: Marlins (61-76) Vs Rockies (49-89)
Reynoso went 6 strong giving up only 2 runs. Castilla and McGee had 3 hits a piece and we rolled to a nice win. We head to Atlanta where the surging Braves are only 5 out in the NL West.

Tanana got lit up for 7 runs in 4 innings and we just couldn't muster anything against Greg Maddux or their pen.

SEPTEMBER 6TH: Marlins (62-77) At Braves (79-60)
This is getting pretty redundant. No offense again, although to be fair I did sit a couple of regulars. But Millwood shut us down. Bryn Smith had a rough go of it and we got trounced once more.

SEPTEMBER 7TH: Marlins (62-78) At Braves (80-60)
Well, we can find all sorts of ways to lose. Chuck Smith labors thru 5 innings but only gives up 2 runs. Unfortunately again that's all they need as Glavine silences our bats once more.

SEPTEMBER 8TH: Marlins (62-79) At Braves (81-60)
Wohooo!! Even though David Nied baffled us for over 6 innings we were able to scrap together a couple of runs off of their pen and a good performance by Saunders and our pen got us a win. Finaly.

Another day, another defeat. This time John Thomson stuffed us. World beaters I tell ya. Blech.

Beaten by the long ball. Reynoso and Robert Person had a scoreless duel going until the 6th when the Dave Henderson hit a run jack off of Reynoso. Henderson added another homer as did Greg Litton and even though kept it close we came up just short once more.

SEPTEMBER 11TH: Marlins (63-81) At Rockies (53-92)
Ozzie Guillen hit his second HR in as many days (and of the season), this one a 3 run shot and also stole a base. Chris Gwynn hit a 2 run blast. In short we belted 18 hits and plated 11 in a romp, salvaging a game of this series.

We basicaly renogotiated everyone we signed to be September filler for an additional year at the same price mainly because I didn't wanna have to spend free agency just signing filler for the 40 man roster. I really hate this though cause it ties up over $2 Million in salary in guys whose only use is to play in September.

We signed Terry Shumpert to a 3 year deal worth $330K a year.

Neal Heaton has shoulder tendinitis and is being shut down for the year. We'll finish the year back in a 5 man rotation with Armando Reynoso taking Heatons spot.

Another day, another lowly defeat. Tom Candiotti threw a complete shutout against us and Bryn Smith was pretty bad, his innings are getting up there.

Chuck Smith went 7 strong, allowing only 2 runs. Only problem is that Pedro Martinez threw a complete game shutout, so yeah.

Different day, same exact result. This time it's Greg Gross throwing a complete game shutout against us. W'ere headed home for a homestand that hopefully will help us avoid 90 losses.

Well, we led 7-1 and Tanana was breezing along. Then he gave up 4 in the 6th. We still led 7-6 going into the ninth when Goose let up the tying run and then a 3 run shot to Gary Sheffield, his 2nd HR of the day. So we lose another. Terry Shumpert maybe celebrating his new contract did go 5-5, so that's something. Something.

The good news, Bryn Smith and the bullpen pitched well, scattering 11 hits and allowing just 2 runs. The bad news, Andy Benes held us to 2 hits and 1 run, thus making them better in this particular game.

SEPTEMBER 19TH: Marlins (64-87) Vs Padres (79-69)
Chuck Smith threw 6 good innings of 2 run ball and we were tied late but Manzanillos gave up an 8th inning run and that was all she wrote. Swept.

In the AL East the Yankees cling to a 1 game lead on the Blue Jays and the Indians are now just 4 back.

Saunders pitched ok but only got thru 5 innings. Our pen gave up a couple of runs. We played from behind all game and just couldn't get it done. Again.

Reynoso threw 7 innings of 4 run ball for us. Jose Rijo threw 9 innings of no run ball against us. That about sums it up.

Pretty wild game. Tanana gives up 4 in the first but settles down. We get homers from Gaetti, Lemke & Petrali but their bullpen outsdoes ours and they hold on for a win. Swept again. Man, this season can't end soon enough.

SEPTEMBER 22ND: AROUND THE LEAGUE
The Astros lead is now 5.5 in the NL West, it's all but over.
The Blue Jays are still just 1 game back of the Yankees and it looks like it's gonna go down to the wire.
The Mariners have crept back to 4.5 games behind the White Sox but they'll need a miracle.

We take a 5-3 lead to the ninth which Goose proceeds to blow, allowing them to tie it. We score in the 10th and again they tie it up. It goes into the 15th when Gil Heredia, our last pitcher, having to hit for himself, singles in a run. McGee follows with a 2 run double and we hold on to break the 10 game losing streak. WOOOHOOOOOO!!!

We gave our starters the day off and the reserves sucked llama nipple. Chuck Smith was mediocre, we pounded out 4 hits.
