AROUND THE LEAGUE TRADE DEADLINE MOVES

On July 10th the Padres sent RP prospect Pat Gomez 73/83 to the Phillies for SP Danny Jackson 80/80. The Padres at this point were about 5 or 6 games out of the NL West and it was a pretty solid all around deal to try and strenghten their team for the stretch run.

On July 14th the Twins continued their dismantling by sending veteran 1B Kent Hrbek 83/83 to Montreal for SP prospect Rod Henderson 63/81. Again, a solid deal for both teams given their situations as the Expos are clearly building towards making a run next season.

On July 22nd the Dodgers, just a few games out of the NL West sent RP prospect Takashi Saito 72/83 to the Pirates for veteran Second Basemen Ryne Sandberg 86/86.

On July 26th the Expos continued their stockpile for next season by getting 27 year old SP Randy Tomlin from Pittsburgh in exchange for prospects RF Tony Barron 60/78 and 1B Greg Colbrun 69/71.

Also on the 26th the Dodgers acquired 31 year old veteran RP Dan Plesac 78/78 from the Rockies in exchange for prospects 22 year old RP Todd Williams 59/74, 20 year old SP Gary Ruth 59/74 and 25 year old Catcher Noe Munoz 59/74. All in all a decent for both sides.

And finaly on the 26th the Braves, also in contention in the West, sent 26 year old Catcher Francisco Cabrera 73/83 to Detroit for 2B Lou Whitaker 83/83.

On the 28th the Tigers made another deal, this time shipping 34 year old 2B Tony Phillips to the AL West contending Mariners for 24 year old 2B prospect Fernando Vina 71/81. Another deal that makes total sense.

On the 29th the Tigers continued their selling off by sending 33 year old SP Mike Moore 83/83 to Cleveland in exchange for 25 year old SP Dave Mlicki 70/84 and 23 year old reliever Alan Embree 70/82. The Indians arn't really in the hunt but Moore is signed for 2 more years so the deal makes sense if they're looking towards next year.

On the 30th the Brewers sent 29 year old RF Dante Bichette 86/86 to the White Sox for 22 year old SP Jason Bere 71/82 and 24 year old RP Shingo Takatsu 68/82. The White Sox are fighting tooth and nail with Seattle for the AL West so it's obvious how Bichette could be a want, but Milwaukee maybe didn't get enough in return, still it's obvious what the deal was meant to do.

And now on to July 31st, ESPN is hopping, the nation is abuzz, what big deals will go down as midnight and the trading deadline fast approaches?

The first deal of the day sees the Phillies send CF Lenny Dykstra to the Mets in exchange for RP Pete Walker, 24, 64/74. SP Juan Castillo, 23, 59/71 and RP Don Florence, 26, 62/75. The Phills didn't get a whole lot for The Dude but it's not an awfull deal and again, it makes sense.

Minnesota gets back in the selling off game by shipping LF Shane Mack to San Diego in exchange for 3 players. 23 year ols RP Bryce Florie 63/76, 24 year old SP Stan Spencer 58/74 and 20 year old RP Neil Weber 60/74. Again, it's more quantity over quality but one more time it makes sense as Minnesota is clearly retooling.

The Twins finish off their yard sale by sending Kevin Tapani, 29, 84/84 to the Padres in exchance for SP Matt Clement, 18, 72/84. Both Mack and Tapani will hit arbitration at the end of the year and it's clear the lowly Twins don't wanna pay them.

And lastly and certainly leastly, a nothing deal between the Phillies and Indians as the Phils ship RP Mike Williams to the Indians for SS Felix Fermin.

In all the time i've played Mogul i've never really looked around the league to see how the AI interacted with each other but in going over these trades and really looking at things i'm quite impressed with what I see. There is almost no trading going on that isn't for a reason.

A few bad teams are in major sell mode, shipping out veterans or guys who are due for pay raises, and the teams in contention are willing to send out prospects. Almost every team in the NL West who was in contention went out and added players, same thing with the White Sox and Mariners in the AL West.

AUGUST 2ND: Marlins (53-53) Vs Cardinals (51-56)
Rough start to the homestand as Saunders gave up 6 runs over 5+ innings despite striking out 10 Cardinals. We rallied late and had 1st & 2nd with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th but came up just short against Lee Smith.
Final Score: Cardinals 6 Marlins 5



AUGUST 3RD: Marlins (53-54) Vs Cardinals (52-56)
Well we lost. The semi good news is that Heaton went pretty deep to help our much overtaxed bullpen. Tewksbury shut us down on 80 frikin pitches. Just a lackluster effort.

AUGUST 4TH: Marlins (53-55) Vs Cardinals (53-56)
The good news, we outhit them 20-10. The bad news, we lost anyway. The worse news, we got our asses swept. Tanana got shelled hard and we just couldn't outscore them. Bleh bleh bleh. FOOOEY!
Final Score: Cardinals 11 Marlins 8



AUGUST 4TH: AROUND THE LEAGUE
The Blue Jays have won 11 in a row, the Yankees have dropped 4 in a row. Toronto leads the AL East by half a game.
Chicago has won 3 in a row, Seattle has dropped 4 in a row. The White Sox lead the AL West by 3.5 games.
Houston, the one team who didn't make a trade in the NL West has won 7 in a row and holds a 5.5 and 6 game lead respectively over the Dodgers and Braves. The Padres have slid to 9 back and are likely out of contention.

AUGUST 5TH: Marlins (53-56) Vs Phillies (42-68)
We jumped on Ben Rivera for 5 early runs and Bryn Smith proceeded to mow thru them, throwing a complete game, 1 run gem. This was a nice as our bats were alive and we got our bullpen some much needed rest.
Final Score: Marlins 8 Phillies 1



AUGUST 6TH: Marlins (54-56) Vs Phillies (42-69)
Just a textbook win as we get to Schilling early, Chuck Smith gives up 3 runs over 6 innings and our rested pen shuts em down the rest of the way as we grab our second straight.
Final Score: Marlins 5 Phillies 3



AUGUST 7TH: Marlins (55-56) Vs Phillies (42-70)
Man, what a rough loss. We jumped out to a 3-0 lead and Tony Saunders only mistake was a 2 run HR to Jeff Manto but our pen couldn't hold it and they tied it in the 8th. We went 11 and they finaly got to our pen and eeked out a 1 run extra winning victory to avoid the sweep.
Final Score: Phillies 4 Marlins 3 (11 Innings)



AUGUST 8TH: DAY OFF

AUGUST 9TH: Marlins (55-57) Vs Mets (75-38)
Ughh. Tanana rebounds wonderfully, going 8 innings of 2 hit, 2 run ball but we can't do much with Bobby Jones. It goes extra innings where Bonilla hits a 2 run shot off of Heredia in the 14th friggin inning and they close it out. Bleh to the max!
Final Score: Mets 4 Marlins 2 (14 Innings)



AUGUST 10TH: Marlins (55-58) Vs Mets (76-38)
Bryn Smith gives up 5 runs over 7 innings and Doc Gooden just silences our bats as he throws a complete game and the Mets take their 2nd in a row from us.
Final Score: Mets 5 Marlins 1



AUGUST 11TH: Marlins (55-59) Vs Mets (77-38)
We actualy led 4-1 early but then Chuck Smith got rocked (his defense did him no favors) and our bullpen got knocked around en rout to a Mets route. So we drop to 5 games under .500 as we head back out west. Not the homestand I was envisioning.
Final Score: Mets 12 Marlins 5

AUGUST 12TH: Marlins (55-60) At Rockies (39-77)
We got out to a 5-2 lead thanks to a 3 run double by Santovenia. Saunders struggled a bit but was effective. Gossage blew a 2 run lead in the 9th by giving up a 2 run shot to Winfield (his 2nd of the day) but we EXPLODED in the 11th for 10 runs, that's right, 10 runs. McGees second HR of the day and a Shumpert shot as well were highlights as we just mauled the end of their pen. A fun game but man is our bullpen overworked right now.
Final Score: Marlins 15 Rockies 5 (11 Innings)




AUGUST 13TH: Marlins (56-60) At Rockies (39-78)
Criminy Crunk! Heaton got SMASHED for 12 runs in 7 innings. I left him in for 130 pitches which I believe is by far the highest pitch count i've let one of my guys take but i needed to rest my bullpen. Dave Winfield smashed 3 HR's, giving him 5 for the series as the returned the favor of the day before and just buggered us.
Final Score: Rockies 12 Marlins 2




AUGUST 14TH: Marlins (56-61) At Rockies (40-78)
Tanana gave up 5 runs over 6 innings, we rallied to tie it but our bullpen got hit pretty good and they won a high scoring affair to take 2 of 3 from us. Awfull play from our guys and our pitchers are starting to get hit around pretty good now.
Final Score: Rockies 8 Marlins 6

Quick note. One of the things I dislike about Mogul is that on September 1st it automaticly expands you to a 40 man roster, which means that if you don't have a deep system (I usualy dont have alot of minor league filler players) it will promote your prospects to the major league level and if they see any game time it will count as an arbitration year. So rather than promote my youngsters and not play them I'm gonna have to sign a bunch of filler players.

AUGUST 15TH: TRANSACTION NEWS

Signed: SP Jeff Ballard- 30 year old, rated 68. Signed for 1 year, $140K. Pitched 5 years for the Orioles before being released in 91. Has bounced around the Independant Leagues for awhile.

Signed: RP Carlos Reyes- 24 years old, rated 52/68. Signed for 1 year, $140K. Pitched a few years in Rookie ball and has been pitching this year in the Dominican.

Signed: 2B Jose Mota- 28 Years old, rated 60/62. Signed for 1 year, $140K. Had a cup of coffee for San Diego in 1991 and played this year in the Royals system before they released him.

AUGUST 16TH: Marlins (56-62) At Padres (62-55)
Very little luck at all tonight as Andy Benes held us quiet all night. Bryn Smith went 7 innings but gave up 7 runs to a potent Padres lineup that has Shef, Gwyn, McGriff, Dunston, Mack et all. These west coast teams are just a butt fuck better than anybody in the east but the Mets.

AUGUST 17TH: Marlins (56-63) At Padres (63-55)
Damnit! We played them well, Chuck Smith gave up 5 runs over 7 but pitched pretty well and we came from behind to tie it in the 9th but they won it on a Tony Gwynn hit in the bottom of the 9th to send us to another defeat. I'm feeling a real lack of energy from this team right now.
Final Score: Padres 6 Marlins 5



AUGUST 18TH: Marlins (56-64) At Padres (64-55)
Shumpert hit a 2 run inside the park homer in the 3rd and we were clinging to that till Saunders gave up 2 runs in the 6th and then Landrum gave up 2 runs in the 7th and that was all she wrote. Overwhelming Padres, Underwhelming Marlins spells sweep. Phooeeey!

AUGUST 18TH: INJURY & TRANSACTION NEWS
Geno Patreli has a strained rib and will only miss 2 days but with only having 2 Catchers on the roster I decide to send down Jason Hufford and call up Dave Nilson. Nilson will likely be my everyday Catcher from here on out.

Grrrrrr. Heaton gave up 2 runs early but then settled down and matched Glavine pitch for pitch. We got the 2 runs back off of homers from Castilla (wasssup tarcone!) and Santovenia. But then Cook gave up a blast to Chipper Jones in the 9th and they closed it out. So depressing right now, we can't buy a big hit.

AUGUST 20TH: Marlins (56-66) Vs Braves (68-54)
Finaly!! Tanana pitched brilliantly, Castilla homered again and it was tight and tough but we pulled one out. It's about damn time.

AUGUST 21ST: Marlins (57-66) Vs Braves (68-55)
We were back in the muck trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th when we pounced. Capped by a 2 run Shumpert homer we tied the game off of Millwood. But Heredia gave up a run in the 11th and even though we threatened in the bottom half we just couldn't come thru.
Final Score: Braves 4 Marlins 3 (11 Innings)



AUGUST 22ND: Marlins (57-67) Vs Braves (69-55)
Chuck Smith scuffled thru 5. Our bullpen scuffled thru the last 4. Our offense scuffled all game against Maddux. We've been scuffled. As we head to Houston to play the first place Astros I try to get my team pumped up by playing the role of spoilers and handing the Stros some losses. I'll try anything at this point!

Saunders was no good, our pen was no good, we managed 2 measly runs off of Doug Drabek and we got stomped again. THE FISH ARE FLOUNDERING!!

Whoa! Step up to the plate Mr. Neal Effin Heaton. Heaton outduels Pete Harnisch, throwing a complete game 3 hit shutout. We only score 1 run, but it's all we need. Nice job Neal.

AUGUST 25TH: Marlins (58-69) At Astros (80-47)
Tanana pitched excellently but they got a run off of Cook in the ninth to win a low scoring, close ballgame. On to LA to play the Dodgers who have won 9 in a row and are just 4 games behind the Astros.
