  • 1993 NLCS

Game 1 of the NLCS was highlighted by a return to yore as Dwight Gooden threw a complete game shutout in Shea Stadium to give the Mighty Mets a 1-0 series lead. He outdueled Doug Drabek in the encounter.

Game 2 featured a Ken Caminiti grand slam off of Sid Fernandez that would help pace the Astros to a series tying 8-6 win.

In Houston for game 3, the Astros jumped on Brett Saberhagen for 5 runs in 3+ innings, chasing him from the game. Down 5-1 in the 8th however the Mets would storm back with a 4 run inning, highlighted by a 2 run Bobby Bonilla double.
The Astros would pull it out in the bottom of the 10th on an Eric Anthony fly out that Jeff Bagwell would tag up and score on off of Mets Closer Jeff Innis. The Astros now lead the series 2-1.

Game 4 was a white washing as the Stros continued to hit, knocking around Terry Mullholand and taking advantage of a Tony Fernandez error to play 6 eight inning runs as they rolled to an 11-3 victory and a 3-1 series lead.

Game 5 was the icing on the cake as this time Dwight Gooden was hittable and Doug Drabek did yomans work as the Astros won it 6-3 to take the series in a bit of a shocker, 4 games to 1. Jeff Bagwell was named NLCS MVP.

    1993 ALCS

Game 1 in Chicago saw the Sox jump all over Jim Abbott early. Robin Ventura had a homer and 3 RBI as the White Sox rolled to a 7-3 win.

The Yankees responded in a big way in game 2. Jeter, Tartabull and Pat Kelly all had homers as Wilson Alvarez was lit up and Melido Perez pitched an excellent game in a series tying 9-3 win for the Yankees.

Game 3 saw Jimmy Key throw a complete game 5 hitter as the Yankees pounced for 9 more runs, getting to both Alex Fernandez and the White Sox bullpen as the Yanks took a 2-1 series lead.

Game 4 featured unheralded starter Mark Gardner throwing a complete game shutout for the Yankees. Dave Stieb did his best but the Yanks plated 2 runs off of him and took a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Tied in the eight inning of game 5, Jim Abbott allowed back to back homers to Lance Johnson and Steve Sax.
Bobby Thigpen floundered in the ninth however, allowing 2 Yankee runs and sending it to extra innings.
The Sox would push across a run in the 10th however and hold on to send the series back to Chicago with a 5-4 win.

Game 6 would turn out to be a classic. Tied at 3 in the top of ninth the Yankees would score 2 runs.
With 2 outs and a man on 2nd in the bottom of the ninth, Lance Johnson would single in a run off of Mariano Rivera to make it 5-4. Johnson would then steal 2nd and score on a Steve Sax single. The game would go into the 12th when appropriately enough, Don Mattingly would hit a run scoring single off of Bobby Thigpen.
Orlando Hernandez put Burks, Ventura and Thomas down in order in the bottom of the inning to clinch a Yankees return to the World Series.

    • 1993 WORLD SERIES

Game 1 of the 1993 World Series was played in Houston and saw Daryl Kile, Xavier Hernandez and Billy Wagner outduel Jimmy Key as the Stros won it 3-1 to take the series lead.

Game 2 was another tight affair and this time it was Pete Harnisch who outpitched Jim Abbott. Billy Wagner got his second save of the series as the Astros won it 4-3 to take a 2-0 lead back to the Bronx.

With their season on the brink in game 3, the Yankees used a 2 run Spike Owen single in the 2nd inning to put them ahead and a brilliant pitching performance by Melido Perez to climb back into the series with a 3-1 win.

Behind a masterfull pitching performance by Jimmy Key and a late explosion that featured 7 runs over the final 3 innings, the Yankees rolled to a 10-1 victory and tied the World Series at 2 games a piece.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th of a critical game 5, the Yankees scored 4 runs off of Daryl Kile and Xavier Hernandez to cement a 5-3 victory and take a 3-2 lead back to Houston for game 6.

Game 6 was the Pete Harnisch show as he was determined to force a game 7. Harnisch and Billy Wagner combined on a shutout as the Astros prevailed 3-0 and sent the 1993 World Series to game 7.

And so it went, with Melido Perez and Mark Portugal dueling for 7 innings after which the Yankees held a 2-1 lead. With 1 out and Gerald Young on third base, Luis Gonzalez hit a ball deep in the hole at SS off of Steve Howe allowing the tying run to score. The Yankees however would not be denied. Gerald Williams led off the ninth with a double off of Xavier Hernandez, Mike Stanley would then single him in. They Yankees would add a run and take a 4-2 lead to the bottom of the ninth. Mariano Rivera would come in and set down the side in order as the Yankees would claim their first world series title in 15 years and be proclaimed champions of the 1993 baseball season.

      • Good Afternoon gentlemen. I'm sending this fax to give you my thoughts on this past season as well as the future of our team. As you know, money is tight. When we get together next week we need to talk long and hard about the contracts of Willie McGee and Dennis Cook. That's almost 2 million dollars invested in 2 guys, who while wonderfull, may have been a mistake on my part. We may need to rectify that in the offseason by attempting to trade them.

I'm very happy with Tom Goodwin, he had his struggles and needs to make better decisions on the bases but we've seen some growth out of him.

On that end I want our baseball people to seriously attempt to work Maglio Ordonez out at first base. I realize he's already gone from Right to Left Field in his young career but I'd like to have some flexability when he comes up and adding our 3 young outfielders to the mix would leave Goodwin on the bench which is not where I think he belongs.

The current plan, and a plan I plan on holding to, is to have Ordonez, Everett, Green and Cordero all play half a season at AA next year and moving them to AAA after the all star break. I do not believe it is rushing them to expect them all to be ready by the 1995 season. They all seem to have good heads on their shoulders and a ton of talent. Watch them closely but adhere to our schedule unless there are grave problems.

Two young players I'd like to discuss are Dave Nilsson and Vinny Castilla. I believe both of these men should start next season to give us a read on what they have.

Regarding a few veterans. Gary Gaetti and Ozzie Guillen are too solid and they're salaries are acceptable enough that I see no need to investigate moving them.

Regarding the contracts of Larkin, Lemke and Carreon. Adding salary right now will be next to impossible and they all want decent size raises from what they currently make so we're gonna have to let them go.

Now to our Pitching. I fear that Tony Saunders and Chuck Smith, while having immense talent, are too wild. They need to be reigned in and to that extent I do not think that pitching in AAA for a time next year would hurt them. This is not a foregone conclusion, just an idea that we may want to work around by bringing in some veterans as cheaply as we can.

I will be meeting with Frank Tanana and Bryn Smith sometime in the very near future to discuss their plans for the future. Obviously we want them both back but at their ages it's anyones guess as to what they're thinking. If they were to retire it would certainly free up some salary that we could put to good use so right now we're just waiting on them to formulate a plan.

As far as our bullpen goes I think we'll be ok. Goose will not be back, if he plays at all but Bedrosian, Landrum and Candelaria should all be able to contribute once again. We will likely look within to fill any gaps left.

In closing I would like to congratulate you on the season. I know it ended in the shitter but you put together a real fine team and got the best out of what were obviously not world beaters.
        I luv British womenz.

        • Phew. Gotta say, playing every game that last month of the season was a friggin chore. I was in a bad mood last night, snapped at a friend and then realized, the damn game was angering me, lol. But i've trudged thru and now am on to the offseason which I am anticipating. And so it goes.

I've put all 4 of them on the trade block just to see what offers were out there. Not a whole lot atm. Maybe once they mature some more.

              • 1993 EXPIRING CONTRACTS & ARBITRATION CASES

2B Mark Lemke: He's asking for $760K in arbitration, we can't even afford to counter offer and have to release him.

1B Gene Larkin: Now heres something. Gene is only asking for $410K which is a measly $10K raise. And he's willing to make it a 3 year deal on top of that. His presence would help our bench immensely. I give him the deal.

LF Mark Carreon: Mark wants a $700K raise which we just can't afford. He also doesn't much like playing for us and the truth is there isn't gonna be much of a role for him this season so we agree to part ways.

RP John Candaleria: He's 39 and asking for a 2 year deal worth $380K which is about a $120K raise. If we do move Dennis Cook we'll really need Johns left handed arm in our pen. We agree to the deal.

Heading into the offseason I wanna bump up our scouting and medical budgets and make a plan regarding our roster budget from there.

                • START OF 1994 FINANCES
                  Code:
                  Farm System:	$5,300,000	(7th)
                  Scouting:	$5,600,000	(6th)
                  Medical:	$3,600,000	(7th)
                  Salaries:	$11,100,000	(25th)
                  Salary Budget:	$6,200,000
                  Cash: $3,200,000
So, we're $5 Million dollars over budget, which is no good. As Winter and Free Agency approach we'll obviously try and trim some salary, I can make it thru the year being $3 Million over budget I think but we've got 2 roster spots that need to be filled and we need to do it without adding any salary. We'll see how things go.

                    RP Wilson Heredia	62/78	$4K	Arb96
This deal saves us about $360K but more importantly gives us guys who have a couple of years before they hit arbitration which gives us cheap 40 man roster players for the next couple of years. They got the more major league ready prospect in Whisenant but ya gotta give to get. I like this deal alot.

                    December 2nd, Trade:

                    $200K Cash
While we gave up a decent prospect in Millar, we also saved $840K in salary and added $200K cash.
This deal also stretches our pen and rotation and gives us alot of manueverability should anyone falter.

December 2nd, Resigned: C Nelson Santovenia to a 2 year deal worth $180K per year. It's a $30K raise but he's a good guy in our clubhouse and he'll go a fine enough backup to Dave Nilsson for this year and next.

December 2nd, Resigned: SP Eric Hillman. We give him a $20K raise and sign him for 2 years at $200K. We envision him taking Cooks role as the long lefty out of the pen. I really like what he did for us last year and feel he deserves the shot.

                    December 9th, Trade:
                    Code:
                    We Send

                    SS Keith Kessinger	26	55/71	$7K	ARB96
A bit of a bold move on my part. It saves me over $700K in salary but also removes a bullpen piece. Although he tends to be a bit wild I have Rudy Seanez penciled in to take Landrums spot in the bullpen. Our salary has been reduced greatly so far and I still have moves to make.

                    December 18th, Trade:

                    RF Jon Nunnally 22	62/73	$4K	ARB96
We only took a slight salary hit with this trade although we did have to send them some cash.
The upside is that we added better players to the 40 man roster who have no major league service time so they're locked cheap for the next 3 years and we were also able to add a good hitting 2nd basemen in Joey Cora. He's a slap hitter with good speed. His glove isn't so hot but this gives alot of flexability with Terry Shumpert as we can use him as a super reserve.

January 23rd, Signed: 2B Kurt Stilwell to a 2 year deal worth $280K per year. He's a slap hitter, fast and can play all around. I like this signing.

January 23rd, Signed: C Craig Colbert to a 2 year deal at $150K per. He's just minor league, 40 man roster filler.

January 23rd, Signed: 2B Donnie Sadler to the same deal for the same purposes.

                    February 5th, Trade:
                    Code:
                    We Send
                    -----------------
                    SP Neal Heaton 34	64/64	$301K	1YRS

To The San Diego Padres In Exchange For
                    -----------------
                    RP A.J. Sager 29	67/70	$10K	ARB96
Really just a pure salary dump to a team willing to take him.

Well that about wraps up our Winter. We head to Spring Training in a few short weeks and i'll have a report from there on how I think things are shaping up with our squad.

A few quick notes from Spring Training. I decided to give my 4th outfielder spot to John Cangelosi based on speed. This team is gonne be running alot and I wanted, all things being equal, to have a speedster as my 4th outfielder.

Vinny Castilla and Dave Nilson will play everyday with Gaetti manning first base. Both of those guys deserve every opportunity to prove they can be major leaguers and we've got nothing to lose by giving it to them.

I really like our bench flexability. We have a bunch of guys who can play alot of positions and provide a spark off the bench.

As far as our pitching goes, whoa mama could we be in for a ride. Tanana and Bryn Smith both showed decline and it be insane to imagine they can both repeat their performances from last year. Chuck Smith and Tony Saunders have both got to buckle up and be more economical with their pitches this year, I wanna something strong from them. Frank Seminara is a wild card, he's got excellent control, hopefully we've found a diamond in the rough.

Our bullpen really worries me. We've got a bunch of new faces and a few old guys. Luckily I have alot more depth in the minors this year than last.
                        I luv British womenz.

                            • APRIL 2ND: Marlins (0-0) Vs Mets (0-0)
Tanana was impressive, going 7 innings and only giving up 2 runs but we just couldn't do anything against Gooden and they won a tight affair.
Final Score: Mets 3 Marlins 1

                              APRIL 2ND: INURY NEWS
Vinny Castilla has a bruised hand that will keep him out for a couple of days but we don't need to DL him. Gaetti & Stillwell will see some at bats at 3rd.

                              APRIL 3RD: Marlins (0-1) Vs Mets (1-0)
Wow. All I can say. Bryn Smith struggled thru 5 innings, giving up 6 runs. We trailed 8-2 going into the bottom of the 7th and scored a run to make it 8-3. We then scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the 8th off of Anthony Young highlighted by a Kurt Stilwell two run pinch hit double and a Joey Cora RBI single. In the 9th off of Bobby Jones we were down to our last out with runners on 2nd and 3rd when Ozzie Guillen blooped a 2 run single to tie it. Guillen then stole second and after Shumpert was hit by a pitch Tom Goodwin ripped a base hit to score Guillen and give us a dramatic victory. In all we belted out 20 hits with Cora, Guillen, Vanderwall and Gaetti each getting 3 hits a piece. What a win.
Final Score: Marlins 9 Mets 8

                              APRIL 4TH: Marlins (1-1) Vs Mets (1-1)
Another cardiac comeback! Chuck Smith threw 6 innings of 3 run ball and we trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the 7th against Sid Fernandez. Nelson Santovenia hit a 2 run homer and then Cora and Gaetti hit 2 out RBI singles off of Bobby Jones to give us a lead which our bullpen, finalized by Bedrosian in the ninth, held on to for another comeback win and a series victory. Joey Cora had 4 more hits. I'm a little pumped.
Final Score: Marlins 4 Mets 3

                              • APRIL 5TH: Marlins (2-1) At Cubs (1-2)
Tony Saunders barely made it thru the 4th, giving up 7 runs on 11 hits and 4 walks. Terrible. There would be no comeback today and Frank Castillo held us at bay and the Cubbies won an easy one.
Final Score: Cubs 7 Marlins 3

                                APRIL 5TH: INJURY NEWS
Frank Tanana has a strained neck and will miss his next start on the 7th so Eric Hillman will take his spot in the rotation for the day which shortens our pen for the next 3-4 days.

                                APRIL 6TH: Marlins (2-2) At Cubs (2-2)
Another rough one as Seminara didn't make it thru 5. Manzanillo got shelled in relief and we trailed 9-0 going into the 8th inning. And then the story starts. Guillen, Goodwin and Cora all had RBI hits. McGee hit a sac fly and then Nilsson launched a 2 run bomb as we plated 6 to make it 9-6 heading to the ninth. In the ninth of Cubs closer Randy Myers, Goodwin got an RBI single and then with 2 outs Willie McGee singled in 2 runs to tie it. We loaded the bases but Gaetti struck out to end the inning with the score tied at 9. At this point we made the decision to bring in Eric Hillman to pitch because our pen was ragged and evaporated. Hillman got thru the 9th and 10th innings. In the top of the 11th with 2 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd Chuck McCelroy intentionaly walked Nilsson to get to the pitcher spot. This was a tough ass decision because we had nobody left in our pen but Heredia who had thrown a bunch of pitches the day before. So I let Hillman hit. And he singled in 2 runs!! We led 11-9 going to the bottom of the 11th. Hillman proceeds to allow a double to Maldanado and then Buechelle cracks a game tyeing 2 run homer.
BUT he got thru the rest of the inning and we went to the 12th tied at 11 when Willie McGee hit a 2 out RBI single to give us the lead once more!! In the bottom of the 12th with runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out it was clear Hillman was done so we went to Heredia who proceeded to allow a game tyeing single to Maldanado. With the bases loaded and 2 outs Heredia got Jose Hernandez to fly out, thus sending the game to the 13th inning. Finaly in the bottom of the 14th, still tied at 11, Maldanado got his 6th hit of the day, a leadoff double. They loaded the bases with nobody out off of Heredia and a Rey Sanchez sacrafice fly won them an epic battle.
I'm dissapointed in the loss but man does this team play with a ton of heart. Just an awesome game to have been a part of.

                                APRIL 6TH:INJURY & ROSTER NEWS
Due to todays circumstances, Eric Hillman will not be able to take Tananas spot in the rotation so we're gonna DL Frank and call up Armando Reynoso to take his rotation spot. Also, Vinny Castilla will be ready to go tommorow.

                                APRIL 7TH: Marlins (2-3) At Cubs (3-2)
Reynoso stunk like a cats ass on garbage day. Our bullpen was just as shit. Guillen homered and had 3 RBI, Vanderwall also homered but.....Rick Wilkins for the Cubs hit four home runs. Yes. An drove in 9 RBI. So that's that.
Final Score: Cubs 15 Marlins 7

                                APRIL 8TH: Marlins (2-4) At Cubs (4-2)
Oh boy. Bryn Smith gave up 9 runs in 6 innings, our pen gave up 7 more. This is getting bad. Thankfully we get a day off tommorow but holy cow is this is a dissaster so far. What a brutal effin series.
Final Score: Cubs 16 Marlins 2
