    A Home For The Aged:
    A Florida Marlins Expansion Dynasty

Bud Seligs heads were in his hands. Wayne Huzzienga had just been arrested for tax evasion and fruad. A look at his files indicated that Huzziengas net worth was not nearly what it was thought to be.

Day to day operations of the Florida Marlins front office were now being run by Major League Baseball, a situation nobody wanted.

    And then along comes JOEY!

At only 17 years of age I was already a multi millionaire and a mover and shaker in tech circles.

You see, in early 1991 I befriended a dude named Jeff, a real tech head and forward thinker. The internet wasn't even yet in it's infancy but he kept talkin about this thing called a browser.

Anyhoo, over the next few months we developed Joey, the worlds first web browser.

Unveiled in September of 1991, Joey had the world clamoring. Word of mouth spread like wildfire when Joey was introduced and soon 60 Minutes and Dateline were doing pieces of this amazing new technology.

We went public as JJ Incorcorporated in March of 1992 and by Thanksgiving our company was worth over $500 Million dollars.

Things were going swimmingly for me in life, I spent most of time in Miami, partying with models and living it up. Then I opened the paper one morning to read about the Marlins troubles. I immediately called Jeff.

"Buy me out, leave me 10% but buy the other 40!" I was frantic. I arranged a meeting with Bud Selig that afternoon and put my offer on the table."

I offered him $200,000,000 straight up the Marlins and he bit. WOOHOOOO!!

So here I am, out of the computer game (mostly) and in the Baseball game. Little does Mr. Selig know that i've got alot of plans for this sport, and they don't involve change!

The guy I wanted to helm my team was Larry Bowa. After a few interviews and hammering home a salary, it was set. Larry Bowa became the first manager of the Florida Marlins.

The draft for us, as expected, yielded very few prospects. We are a veteran heavy team with a salary well above budget but alot of these guys will be moved as we try and stock the farm system with decent prospects.

      1993 OFFSEASON MOVES

      Trade:
      Blue Jays receive
      ====================
      Brian Daubach (1B)
      Harold Reynolds (2B)
      Jesus Tavarez (CF)
      Rob Stanifer (RP)
      Miguel Jimenez (SP)
      Armando Almanza (RP)
      Russ Springer (RP)

      Marlins receive
      ====================
      Alex Gonzalez (SS)
      Shawn Green (RF)

Both Green and Gonzalez have over 90 potential so this is a real good deal for me even though I did give up some very solid middling prospects.

      Trade:
      White Sox receive
      ====================
      Vic Darensbourg (RP)
      Bill Hurst (RP)
      Jay Powell (RP)
      Joel Adamson (SP)
      Kurt Miller (SP)
      Chris Sabo (3B)
      Ivan Calderon (LF)
      Billy McMillon (LF)
      Ryan Jackson (1B)

      Marlins receive
      ====================
      Magglio Ordonez (RF)
      Nelson Cruz (RP)

The jewel here is of course Ordonez who isn't quite a 90 prospect in the game but I'm happy aquiring him and seeing what happens.

      Trade:
      Mets receive
      ====================
      Ozzie Smith (SS)
      George Brett (1B)
      Terry Mulholland (SP)
      Nelson Cruz (RP)
      Andy Larkin (SP)

      Marlins receive
      ====================
      Chuck Smith (SP)

Not a huge deal, gives me a potential middle of the road starter, nothing more. More of a salary dump than anything.

      Trade:
      Expos receive
      ====================
      Dwight Smith (CF)
      Mark Whiten (RF)
      Jesus Sanchez (SP)
      Charles Johnson (C)

      Marlins receive
      ====================
      Wil Cordero (SS)

A big deal obviously as Cordero has over 90 potential. Johnson and Smith both have good potential and Whiten is still a solid major leaguer. Pretty nice deal for both of us.

      Signed:
SS Pat Bushby and 3B Jason Hufford to 2 year, $140K deals. Both guys are rated in their 50's but are the only free agents available to play the infield and I don't wanna rush any prospects just to fill out my bench.
      I luv British womenz.

As you can see we have some decent everyday prospects but our pitching prospects are very thin. We need to use the amateur draft to stockpile arms, so that'll be something to look forward to.

Our everyday lineup isn't so bad though, we have some speed, good defense and decent veteran hitters so we should be able to score a little bit. Our pitching staff should be able to keep us in games but they wont set the world on fire. We don't really have anyone with high endurance in the pen who can eat innings so we may shuffle Heredia and Manzanillo from AAA from time to time if our pen gets overworked.

My goal is to win 70 games this year and I think this team can put that together. Lets go get em!

          APRIL 2ND: Marlins (0-0) At Cardinals (0-0)
A solid opener in defeat from a pitching standpoint as Tanana threw 8 strong innings but we could only muster 4 hits behind him, 2 of which came from Eisenreich as we fell 3-0.
Final Score: Cardinals 3 Marlins 0

          APRIL 3RD: Marlins (0-1) At Cardinals (1-0)
What a fun game, but ultimately tough defeat. Bill Wegman got roughed up and we trailed 9 to 3 going into the 9th inning when we exploded for 6 runs including a bases loaded triple from Goodwin and a 2 out, game tying RBI single by Guillen. A 2 out single by Tim Jones off of Candelaria won them the game in the bottom of the 9th though. Goodwin and Eisenreich each had 3 hits.
Final Score: Cardinals 10 Marlins 9

          APRIL 4TH: Marlins (0-2) At Cardinals (2-0)
What a game, McGee and Deveraux each had 3 hits and Bryn Smith pitched a complete game as we won our first game in team history with a fundamentaly sound 5 to 2 victory.
Final Score: Marlins 5 Cardinals 2

            APRIL 5TH: Marlins (1-2) Vs Expos (1-2)
A tough game as we matched them run for run thru the first six innings but in the end they had too much offense and squeaked out a win. Saunders gave us 6 innings of 5 run ball but Bedrosian imploded and allowed 3 runs in the 7th and we just couldn't overcome that. McGee had 2 more hits and Gaetti got his first 2 hits of the season after being hitless in St. Louis.
Final Score: Expos 8 Marlins 6

            APRIL 6TH: Marlins (1-3) Vs Expos (2-2)
Another tough loss. All the runs came in the first 3 innings and Neal Heaton pitched a fine game but was outdueled by Brian Barnes as we came up just short. Willie McGee had 2 more hits and 2 more SB's.
Final Score: Expos 3 Marlins 2

            APRIL 7TH: Marlins (1-4) Vs Expos (3-2)
Huge win for us against their ace Dennis Martinez. Down 2 to 1 in the bottom of the 9th we brought two runs in, the capper and game winner by Pat Bushby, a real nice surprise as he singled up the middle to plate LaValiere and give us a huge 3 to 2 win. Tanana pitched 8 wonderfull innings to keep us in this one.
Final Score: Marlins 3 Expos 2

              APRIL 8TH: OFF DAY

              APRIL 9TH: Marlins (2-4) At Pirates (0-6)
Not a good day for us as the winless Pirates and Tim Wakefield no hit us thru 6 innings. We only got 1 hit and while Wegman went the distance and wasn't horrid, he did give up 5 runs. Of course we also commited 2 errors. Just a totaly blase game from our bats and our brains.
Final Score: Pirates 5 Marlins 0

              APRIL 10TH: Marlins (2-5) At Pirates (1-6)
The complete opposite of yesterday as Bryn Smith throws 7 superb innings and we put up 6 runs in shutting down the Buccos.
Gary Gaetti hit the first Home Run in Marlins history and pounded out 4 hits which was real nice to see given his early season struggles. Nice win.
Final Score: Marlins 6 Pirates 1

              APRIL 11TH: Marlins (3-5) At Pirates (1-7)
Easily our best game as a franchise as we pounded out 19 hits. Gaetti homered for the 2nd day in a row, in the past 2 days he's gone 8-10 with 2 HR's and 5 RBI. Tom Goodwin had 4 hits, 4 RBI, 4 Runs and 3 SB. Just an awesome day at the plate for us as a whole. Saunders only went 5 innings but our bullpen was sharp and we smashed the Pirates. A win tommorow puts us at .500 which would be awesome.
Final Score: Marlins 13 Pirates 5
              I luv British womenz.

                APRIL 12TH: Marlins (4-5) Vs Cardinals (5-4)
What a day. Neal friggin Heaton throws a complete game 4 hit shutout as we move to .500 by winning our 3rd in a row. Goodwin, Larkin and Lemke have 3 hits a piece. So far, so fun.
Final Score: Marlins 4 Cardinals 0

                APRIL 13TH: Marlins (5-5) Vs Cardinals (5-5)
BOOM! 4 in a row as Tanana goes an effective 6+ innings. Devereaux smashes 2 HR's and we roll to a 7 to 3 win.
Final Score: Marlins 7 Cardinals 3

                APRIL 14TH: Marlins (6-5) Vs Cardinals (5-6)
The bats are alive with the sound of hitting!! It was the Goodwin & Carreon show today as they each had 3 hits. Goodwin scored 4 times, drove in 3 and had our first inside the park HR to go along with 2 more steals, he's just been monster lately. Wegman gave up 8 runs in 6 innings but our bullpen was dandy and we danced to 5 in a row, our first series sweep and a 7 and 5 record.
Final Score: Marlins 13 Cardinals 9
                I luv British womenz.

                  APRIL 15TH: OFF DAY

                  APRIL 16TH: Marlins (7-5) At Cubs (5-8 )
What a tough game to lose, down 1-0 we loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th but Gaetti popped out and then Larkin grounded out to end the game. Bryn Smith pitched another gem but this was wasted.
Final Score: Cubs 1 Marlins 0

                  APRIL 17TH: Marlins (7-6) At Cubs (6-8 )
Bats went quiet again today as Frank Castillo outdueled Tony Saunders who threw a pretty damn good game of 6 inning 2 run ball. Willie McGee has been really scuffling of late with just 5 hits in his last 24 at bats.
Final Score: Cubs 3 Marlins 1

                  APRIL 18TH: Marlins (7-7) At Cubs (7-8 )
Higher scoring but again we come up just short. Heaton is not real good and despite alot of running and manufacturing runs we just don't have enough fire power to hang with the Cubbies on this day as we drop below .500. We've got 6 games at home coming up and I don't wanna see this team give up, let's get it going again.
Final Score: Cubs 7 Marlins 5

                    APRIL 19TH: Marlins (7-8 ) Vs Pirates (6-10)
Another tough loss as Tanana wasn't good, putting us in a 6-0 hole early. We fought back again but once more it's so very hard to climb back into games when you don't have alot of power and need to rely on speed and manufacturing runs. Bleh.
Final Score: Pirates 6 Marlins 4

                    APRIL 20TH: LINEUP MOVE
Prior to todays game we announce that Dave Hollins will take over as our everyday 1st Basemen and hit 5th behind Gary Gaetti.
Either Gaetti or Larkin, both hitting in the low .200's were rumored for demotion but for now Gaetti is safe and it's Larkin who rides the pine.

                    APRIL 20TH: Marlins (7-9) Vs Pirates (7-10)
A very well played game today. We did everything soundly offensively. Wegman pitched a very nice 7 inning, 3 run game and Goose Gossage earned the first save in Marlin history by striking out the side in the 9th.
Final Score: Marlins 5 Pirates 3

                    APRIL 21ST: Marlins (8-9) Vs Pirates (7-11)
Bryn Smith had his first bad outing of the season and Denny Neagle shut us down but good. A Dave Hollins homer was our faint bright spot.
Final Score: Pirates 8 Marlins 2

                    APRIL 21ST: INJURY NEWS
Dave Hollins, stress fracture in his wrist. And Dennis Cook, also with a stress fracture in his wrist, both need to go on the DL.

Cooks spot on the roster will be taken by Gil Heredia who while a competant replacement, leaves us with only 1 left hander in the bullpen.

Youngster Dave Berg gets the call up to the Major League Roster and Gene Larkin re assumes his spot as our everyday 1st Basemen, for now.

A real heartbreaker as Saunders pitches really well but we let up a run in the top of the 9th and lose a close game.

                      APRIL 23RD: Marlins (8-11) Vs Cubs (10-10)
Wow, what a tough loss and way to end our first 20 game stretch. Heaton pitched well, we took an early lead and all was looking bright heading into the top of the 9th up 6-3 when Goosage, then Bedrosian, then Candaleria combined to shit the bed and leave us tied 6-6. They scored a run off of Heredia in the 10th and that was that. Our first real stomach punch of a game.
Final Score: Cubs 7 Marlins 6

As you can pretty much see, the top 3 in the order have been carrying us. Gaetti & Larkin have been so dissapointing from a run production standpoint. The plan right now is to try and work Mark Carreon in some more at First Base and when Hollins returns give him some at bats at 3rd, we need to get some quality production from the middle of the order and so far it just hasn't happend.

The thing that stands out most here is the amount of innings are starters are working, and they're doing it without high pitch counts. Wegmans ERA is a concern but he has averaged nearly 7 innings a start. Bedrosian and Gossage have both been rocked a couple of times leading to their high ERA's. Overall i'm pretty happy so far with how my staff has been.

The Mets and Dodgers lead their respective divisions by slight margins, things are still pretty tight with only the Giants being more than 5 games out of their division lead in either division in the NL.

In the AL it's the Yankees and Mariners leading with only a few clubs hanging with them in each division.

Strawberry and Carter lead the majors with 8 HR's. Maddux and Ryan each have 4 wins. 5 guys are still hitting over .400 so far. Ellis Burks has 29 RBI to lead the majors. Mike Witts 1.57 ERA leads all of baseball.

                            APRIL 24TH: Marlins (8-12) Vs Cubs (11-10)
Tanana pitched a complete game gem and we cruised to a fairly easy getaway day win over the Cubs. Road trip coming up and it'd be nice to string some wins together.
Final Score: Marlins 4 Cubs 1

Mark Carreon will be inserted at first base to try and give us a spark. Also, Ozzie Guillen will move into the 2 hole as we try and stretch our lineup out a little but.

Our new lineups will look like this.

As my favorite player of all time I was gonna ask you to trade for him for my interest but then I saw this:

I figured you'd be able to get him cheap.

I still have over 360 of his rookie cards just waiting for the day his play takes off.
