1993 NLCS
Game 1 of the NLCS was highlighted by a return to yore as Dwight Gooden threw a complete game shutout in Shea Stadium to give the Mighty Mets a 1-0 series lead. He outdueled Doug Drabek in the encounter.
Game 2 featured a Ken Caminiti grand slam off of Sid Fernandez that would help pace the Astros to a series tying 8-6 win.
In Houston for game 3, the Astros jumped on Brett Saberhagen for 5 runs in 3+ innings, chasing him from the game. Down 5-1 in the 8th however the Mets would storm back with a 4 run inning, highlighted by a 2 run Bobby Bonilla double.
The Astros would pull it out in the bottom of the 10th on an Eric Anthony fly out that Jeff Bagwell would tag up and score on off of Mets Closer Jeff Innis. The Astros now lead the series 2-1.
Game 4 was a white washing as the Stros continued to hit, knocking around Terry Mullholand and taking advantage of a Tony Fernandez error to play 6 eight inning runs as they rolled to an 11-3 victory and a 3-1 series lead.
Game 5 was the icing on the cake as this time Dwight Gooden was hittable and Doug Drabek did yomans work as the Astros won it 6-3 to take the series in a bit of a shocker, 4 games to 1. Jeff Bagwell was named NLCS MVP.
1993 ALCS
Game 1 in Chicago saw the Sox jump all over Jim Abbott early. Robin Ventura had a homer and 3 RBI as the White Sox rolled to a 7-3 win.
The Yankees responded in a big way in game 2. Jeter, Tartabull and Pat Kelly all had homers as Wilson Alvarez was lit up and Melido Perez pitched an excellent game in a series tying 9-3 win for the Yankees.
Game 3 saw Jimmy Key throw a complete game 5 hitter as the Yankees pounced for 9 more runs, getting to both Alex Fernandez and the White Sox bullpen as the Yanks took a 2-1 series lead.
Game 4 featured unheralded starter Mark Gardner throwing a complete game shutout for the Yankees. Dave Stieb did his best but the Yanks plated 2 runs off of him and took a commanding 3-1 series lead.
Tied in the eight inning of game 5, Jim Abbott allowed back to back homers to Lance Johnson and Steve Sax.
Bobby Thigpen floundered in the ninth however, allowing 2 Yankee runs and sending it to extra innings.
The Sox would push across a run in the 10th however and hold on to send the series back to Chicago with a 5-4 win.
Game 6 would turn out to be a classic. Tied at 3 in the top of ninth the Yankees would score 2 runs.
With 2 outs and a man on 2nd in the bottom of the ninth, Lance Johnson would single in a run off of Mariano Rivera to make it 5-4. Johnson would then steal 2nd and score on a Steve Sax single. The game would go into the 12th when appropriately enough, Don Mattingly would hit a run scoring single off of Bobby Thigpen.
Orlando Hernandez put Burks, Ventura and Thomas down in order in the bottom of the inning to clinch a Yankees return to the World Series.
