  • Oh and I was intrigued when people were saying that a player didn't lose any money when he reneg. That it was just salary converted in bonus. I don't want to feed the crazy guy, but I just wanted to show you what the reneg looked like.

As you can see, Torres took a 15 millions pay cut when he reneg. It's definitely a problem in the game but I would've done the same if I were the one who signed him because he had the right to do so. I don't like the fact that some here talking like he did something wrong.

As for your post Boss, If you want to prevent this situation, the reneg rule will do that, but if you want to help free agency, it's not gonna happen. Free agency in this game will ever be the same simply because GMs will NEVER let their star players go for nothing. I think I've proven that with my experience in the NAFL that I posted here.

Like Jeff said, I think the best way is to wait for a new version of the game.

    • If Torres gets hurt or is traded or cut, that is a huge cap hit. An 8.7 mil a year bonus is nothing to sneeze at.

Raiders give receiver Walker six-year, $55 million deal

        NFL.com Wire Reports
The Oakland Raiders signed free-agent wide receiver Javon Walker to a stunning six-year, $55 million deal that includes $27 million in the first three years and $16 million guaranteed, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.
Javon Walker restructured his contract which will save the Oakland Raiders a reported $22 million off his base salaries through 2013.

"We are very happy Javon agreed to restructure his contract and be a part of what we're building here," senior executive John Herrera said. "This shows his loyalty and commitment to being a member of the Oakland Raiders and we're excited about that."
And like I have already pointed out in real life NFL Javon Walker took a 22 million dollar pay cut, so why is everyone so upset? Players restructure their contracts every day in the NFL but we want to prevent that in the IFL?

        • If that's the contract I gotta say it's nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

Torres tore up $15M in fairy tale money in order to get about $10M more guaranteed AND the increase in bonus makes it a LOT more probable that he sees the salary money as the contract goes on.

I think a player would definitely take this deal as it gives him $10M now and more power in future negotiations.

With contract 1 Orlando can cut or trade him in year 3 and save money. That $17M will be either redone by another team after a trade or go "poof!" if he's cut.

With contract 2 Orlando can't save money by cutting or trading him in year 3, thus the new year 3 salary of $14,150,000 is almost guaranteed.

          • Javon Walker took a cut because if he didn't he would be shown the EXIT. The Raiders grossly overpaid a has been WR too much money for a guy that should be out of the league.

His play didn't justify the salary he was making thus take less or be cut.

Same goes for Gallery too. He was a bust and makes more then he should. You take the pay cut or your gone. Adios amigo!

The only time you see a high profile player reneg is when the team needs cap relief to acquire more top notch talent or they are in the last year of their deal and want to stay with that team.

Actually we couldn't cut Walker because he was injured and guaranteed 5 million this year, but that is besides the point.

EXACTLY?? So lets prevent that in the IFL? We want to acquire more talent, WE want to ease our cap to continue to sign players, so why would we make a rule stating we cannot do that? It doesn't make sense and won't have my vote if it is ever put to an official vote.

The fact is there is NOTHING wrong with the Torres, deal. I see no problems.

                Please

don't bring JAVON WALKER to this discussion. The guy stole Al Davis money the year before and nearly decided to retire after getting shot and Al Davis convinced him to stay. He had a terrible deal, felt guilty and gave some money back. He deserved a pay cut. Not the top defensive tackle in the league in his prime.

By the way, I don't think that his new contract is that bad too, I'm just pointing that Torres took a pay cut and it's not normal

Ohh we can't use a real life example of a player getting a HUGE contract and then restructuring it the following year because Walker is a tool? Your singing to the fucking choir here Penn, NO FUCKING SHIT! I know he's a useless piece of shit, I'M A RAIDER FAN, your not telling me anything I don't know.
The fact remains it mirrors the Torres contract to a tee. Torres signed for crazy money, then a year later, restructured. Hell, are you Torres's agent? How do you know he wasn't shot and tried to retire and felt guilty?

You can bring real life example of course, but find one with the top player at his position taking a pay cut that make his team save 20 millions.

It's not a mirror situation at all because Walker is not valuable at all and had to take a pay cut. Davis would've cut him. He doesn't care about guaranteed money. He cut DeAngelo Hall the same year he gave him a 7 yr 70 millions deal with 24 millions guaranteed.

I'm absolutely not saying that players don't reneg their contract the year after they signed it. I'm saying that if they're doing it, they will not take a pay cut if they produced well and are still considered the top player at their position.

Ohh it doesn't count because he isn't a pro bowl player? Ohh I see!!

Lets face it, the Torres contract was fine. Nothing to see here....move along please......

                        • But it is all about guaranteed money. He is guaranteed over 10 million dollars more. The base salary means nothing (relatively). If he (Pirates) cuts him now he loses 37 mil as opposed to 25 mil. next season if he cuts him he loses 26 mil as opposed to 18 mil. You see the picture. The more he restructures the contract the more bonus (guaranteed money) he pays. That is the penalty of restructuring contracts. The cap hit you take.

I dont think this restructure was that bad either.

                          • Does a Superbowl MVP count?

Peyton Manning has agreed to restructure his contract with the Indianapolis Colts to save the team $8.2 million in salary cap space. The deal was first reported by ESPN.com's John Clayton.
The Super Bowl MVP was to receive a $10 million roster bonus during the offseason but by converting the money into a regular signing bonus, the Colts can prorate that amount over the remaining four years of his deal. That saves Indianapolis space under the cap, which is $109 million.

                              • Sounds like Manning gets paid exactly the same amount there. It's just a move to make the $$ spread across multiple seasons for cap reasons. Whether $10M in salary in that season or a $10M bonus he would've gotten the money.

It's not much different than your boss asking you if he can pay you with a check from your local bank instead of Bank of America. What do you care? But to make the players look like good guys the media reports it that way. FWIW - I read 9 players got cut when Manning first signed the deal. He's such a team player.
