First, I'm glad you didn't stay out of it, ice. Logical opinions on both sides is the surest way to an acceptable end I'd think. And I didn't know the reasoning behind that rule before your post.Originally posted by iceman99 View PostThe only reason that rule is in effect is because owners would offer 8 mil bonus and 1 mil salary to rent the player. If they did good they could tag them, and if they did not they were not tied to them.
To get around what you're stating with the short bonus-heavy sign and franchise tag way to a better contract perhaps we could limit early FA rounds to 4 year minimum contracts. Then allow people to fill the holes with whatever deals they want once some of the "targets" are off the market to high paying long-term teams.

Cy has continued to point out that the rule doesn't achieve the effect you think it will. Why do you continue to ignore this? Also, what other league are you in?Originally posted by DakotaGeorge View Postlol like 6 other owners had the same opinion as me about the rule it was actually brought to my attention by another owner that a post should be opened about this rule. I'm not gonna air out laundry like yourself but lemme tell you without specific names that I've had and am currently having very logical debates on this subject via PM with people of the "other side".Originally posted by DakotaGeorge View Postlol like 6 other owners had the same opinion as me about the rule it was actually brought to my attention by another owner that a post should be opened about this rule. Exactly my point... every league not just the NFL does this. Yes this is not a real professional league. But still it can be done and all the star players do it... ITS THE NEW ROIDOriginally posted by Pirates View PostI would like to point out that Torres took a salary cut not a bonus cut. He still is getting over 40 million guaranteed. I could be wrong, but just like the NFL we can restructure contracts but the bonus never reduces. Basically they just take a lower salary and the bonus goes up. It looks like Torres took a huge pay cut but he actually got more guaranteed money.

half the people who posted in here dont understand what effect we are looking for reguardless.
Some think its to fix the cap problem.
Some think its to increase free agency.
No I believe my main point was to stop people from offering huge amounts of money just to out bid another person then never have to honor the contract. like I said I could offer somone 111.5 mil just to get them off the free agent market and only be responsible for 11.5 mil of it and just reneg it down and everyone on gods green earth would know the only reason i offered 111.5 was just to screw someone else out of getting the guy. putting the rule into place would prevent over bidding and never paying. Would force owners to pay the buying price on their free agents and yes it has been the opinion that it would HELP the free agent market a LITTLE bit.

Would that convo include your threat to leave the league if the rule passed?

Again as it has been suggested... Your point is valid, but your also in year one of owning a team here. We have honestly had one of the lowest turnover rates of any league I have been a part of, many of these owners have been here for some time now.Originally posted by DakotaGeorge View Postlol like 6 other owners had the same opinion as me about the rule it was actually brought to my attention by another owner that a post should be opened about this rule. To be honest... You would be more receptive if you were not compative... Yes limiting renegotiations is something that could work. But as many have posted here and some have repeated, it does not help as much as people think. Would it give a stud or two in FA? Nope, has not to this point in other leagues I have been a part of.. All they do is trade the player to a team with cap space. And regardless of when you can renegotiate you will always have a team with cap space.
This is a game issue not a GM issue, if you were here (and yes I am sure you played the older version) when we used the old game, finances were handled better because you had bigger star players. That changed in 2007 especially regarding player ratings and the salary side of things.
But hey I can speak till I am blue in the face. We either agree with you or we don't. And if we dont is does not matter.GM Columbia Fire

I dont want studs in FA.
I want owners to have to pay the contracts they offer to players that they put out there to outbid other people. Not have a way to weasel out of it later on at a much reduced price.
If you are going to offer x amount of dollars over x amount of years to outbid another owners why shouldnt you have to pay that amount of money you offered to outbid another owner?

You pick a player... hell we can void the contract there would be no lasting impact.
You offer them a 30 Million 3 year deal... 3 Mil bonus and spread the rest out over the contract.
I will offer the same player 30 million of 3 years and offer a 15 Mil bonus and spread it our over the rest of the contract.
Wonder which one he will take? Because if he signs my deal... I am tapped for 15 million regardless of if I resign him or not. So in that case your suggestion is moot because I am still on tap for that money even if I resign or cut the player.GM Columbia Fire

New example
I bid 50 mil for a player you bid 65 for him and get him.
Why should you be able to reneg his contract down to 25-35 mil after you bid 65 mil to beat my 50 mil?

If only there was a way to guarantee the money had to be spent. Like when the player signed you just gave him a portion of it or something. We could call it a bonus of some type.Originally posted by DakotaGeorge View PostI want owners to have to pay the contracts they offer to players that they put out there to outbid other people. I finally get the point George. Your concern is overbidding not FA. You feel I cheated everybody by signing him for more and then cut his salary, thus exploiting and cheating.
Your rule proposal is more of a protection of what happened with Torres. I get it and I understand it. Remember he is getting more guaranteed money, which means whether I trade him or cut him there is actually more money that I have to pay regardless. Just want to make sure you understand the reality of the contract in what I have to pay should something bad happen to him.
