Financialy we're doing ok as we didn't lose any money in June, so that's something.
The good is Castilla having a decent average and solid power so far. The bad is Nilsson showing us very little.
The ugly is that Karros is a real solid player who wants alot of money ($1.7M) and hates playing in Florida so we have to decide wether to put alot of salary into an offense we already think is gonna be ok next year or losing him outright or turning around and trading him in the next month. Goodwin has leveled off but we're still so very high on him, but again he's up for arbitration and we will have to invest to keep him.
We're getting pretty much what we expect from our veterans except for Guillen who has been rubish so far.

Looking at Saunders and Chuck Smith I see a couple of guys who I think can continue to be solid 3-4 type starters although their wildness and pitch economy has to improve as right despite some brilliant flashes, they too often struggle to make it thru 5 innings. Our pen has been putrid of course but i'm hoping that it improves with everybody healthier. Fingers crossed.

    AROUND THE LEAGUE IN JUNE

The Mets continue to be the wheeler dealer team as they made a couple of moves to bring in veterans.

First they acquired RF Daryl Hamilton, 29, 77/77 from Milwaukee in exchance for prospects RP Takashi Kashiwada, 23, 59/73 & 2B Doug Saunders, 24, 53/73.

Then they went out and got veteran SP Mark Gubicza, 31, 86/86 from the Royals in exchange for RP Bill Pulsipher, 20, 61/80, RP Mike Bovee, 20, 64/81 and RP Jerrod Riggan, 20, 65/78.

Milwaukee, besides sending off Hamilton, also traded RP Doug Henry to California in exchange for 1B Eduardo Perez, 24, 68/81 and 3B George Arias, 22, 58/68. Henry joins an Angels team right in the thick of the AL West race.

AJ Sager allowed all 3 men to score and then when he shouldn't have been facing a lefty, allowed a 3 run homer by Luis Gonzalez. They would score 7 times in all and go on to win it.

          • MARLINS MID SEASON FRONT OFFICE MEETING
I've gotten my entire front office staff together for these meetings, the purpose of which is to go over our finances, contact agents of players with expiring contracts, gameplan and map out our direction for the future and get to work on making some deals in the next 20 days before the trade deadline.

            FINANCES
            Code:
            Farm System: $5,300,000	13th
            Scouting:	$5,500,000	13th
            Medical:	$3,200,000	10th
            Salaries:	$8,200,000	29th
            Payroll Budget:	$6,500,000
            Profit: -$520,000
            Cash: $2,600,000
Things are going to be getting interesting coming up here as we look into the prospects of dealing Tanana, Bryn Smith and maybe Karros. The idea of moving Cora and Guillen has been floated around Marlin headquarters as well.

The fact of the matter is that investing big money, anything over a million dollars per yer, in any one player at this point is unwise economicaly, but at the same time both Goodwin and Karros will hit arbitration after this season so I've got some major decisions to make.

I don't like constantly wheeling and dealing and breaking the team up, but at the same time the team is simply not very good as it stands. I really wanna spend more money on our Farm, Medical and Scouting systems as well.

The simple truth is that whatever I do it better result in more fans and more revenue by next year or else i'm gonna be in a pickle.

            ARBITRATION ELIGABLE PLAYERS
We will be spending all break negotiating with players and their agents whos contracts expire at the end of the season or are due for arbitration.

Center Fielder, Tom Goodwin: Toms agent makes it clear to us he loves playing in Florida. We discuss perhaps making a long term comitment that would pay him, while not upper tier money, very good money. When the dust settles we hammer out a 5 year deal worth $850,000 per season. All sides are pretty damn happy.

Left Fielder, 29, 79/79, John Vander Wal: This is a very tough meeting as we know John likes playing here and he is a solid contributer to our team, but he wants nearly $1 Million a season and we just can't afford that for a guy who may not be a starter for us if he signs. We also realize he's a valuable trade chip this season so that further muddies things. Another point in the plus side to signing him is that he can play first base, and if Karros is dealt then Johns bat suddenly becomes more valuable to us. The highest we offer is $670K and they have no desire to accept that offer so we decide to call it a day and step away from the table.

First Basemen, 26, 77/77, Eric Karros: Perhaps the easiest negotiations in a bad way. Karros wants nearly $1.7M a year and on top of that he doesn't like playing in Florida. Already having been traded twice in his young career Karros is seen as a bit of a malcontent and while we think he's got the kind of talent that deserves the contract he wants, we don't have the means to give him that kind of deal despite his production for us. We agree to look for a possible deal and if one can't be found well then we'll just have to let him walk.

Relief Pitcher, 28, 74/75, Gil Heredia: Maybe the easiest deal we'll ever make. Gil likes it here and I love his stuff. He's not asking for much at all and we make a move to lock him up long term with a 4 year deal worth $280K per year. Very nice.

            EXPIRING CONTRACTS

Relief Pitcher, 36, 74/74, Steve Bedrosian: Sort of a no brainer here as he's been dreadfull on the hill and wants an absurd $1 Million dollar a year deal. Thanks for coming.

Catcher, 35, 71/71, Ron Tingley: He doesn't want much of a raise but we already have 3 catchers on our squad and a veteran in the minors so it really doesn't make sense to do much negotiating.

Pitcher, 30, 69/69, Jeff Ballard: Ballard has pitched well for us since coming over and while i'm hesitant to give money to back end or AAA pitchers I am willing to negotiate. At the end of the day we both compromise a little and give him a 2 year deal worth $190K per season, a $50K raise.

Starting Pitcher, 41, 68/68, Frank Tanana: Frank has been amazing in his 2 years here and he's been good for our clubhouse, but the fact remains that he could fall apart at any moment AND he wants nearly $2 Million dollars a year to resign with us, which is just out of the question. We decide to leave the table letting know that at this point Franks name is being put out there for trade talks as we have no interest in agreeing to their demands.

Right Fielder, 29, 67/67, Chris Gwynn: Not a hard decision as Chris is just 40 man roster filler at this point and we already have more than enough outfielders signed thru next year at that level. Chris doesn't really like it here anyway so we agree to end negotiations and just eat lunch.

Starting Pitcehr, 38, 66/66, Bryn Smith: Much like Tanana the asking price for Bryn is just too high. We tell his agent we can't come close to what they're asking and alert them that a trade may be emminent.

Starting Pitcher, 28, 63/65, Armando Reynoso: We invite Armandos agent down to Florida to talk for the simple fact that she's a hot latin chick. I spend the evening drinking and oogling her and then tell her theres no fucking way i'm extended this dudes contract.

Catcher, 34, 64/64, Geno Petrali: Maybe the hardest decision for me to make because I love Geno but the fact is that he's a lefty, same as our starter, and we already have Santovenia signed for next year on the cheap. We begurdingly tell his agent that he's just not in our plans after this season.

Relief Pitcher, 28, 51/62, Dale Polley: We don't even bring his agent down to Florida, we just call them up and say we got no intention of resigning him.

            Trade:
            Code:
            We Send
            -----------------
            LF John Vanderwall	28	79/79	$134K/ARB94

To The Houston Astros in exchange for
            -----------------
            SP Ryan Bowen 26	74/76	$134K/ARB95
            RP Gary Buckles 28	70/73	$11K/2YRS
            $200K
While i'm not enthralled with the deal, it was the best one offered from a financial and talent point of view. Bowen has been solid this year but he was on a stud team, he won't have the kind of support here that he did in Houston. Still, he's signed thru next year and should have a spot in our rotation, he may even take Seminaras spot when we come back from the All-Star break.

Buckles is a short relieve with a cheap price tag who will at best compete for a spot in our pen next year and at worst be cheap 40 man roster filler. The $200K thrown in is nice as well.

As far as Vanderwall leaving, well I hate to see him go but we really had no choice in the matter, he wasn't coming back next year. It certainly weakens an already weak lineup though, that's for sure.

            Trade:
            Code:
            We Send
            -----------------
            1B Eric Karros 26	77/77	$134K/ARB94
            RF Magglio Ordonez	20	71/87	$134K/ARB97

To The California Angels in exchange for
            -----------------
            SP Phil Leftwich	25	72/73	$7K/ARB96
            RP Troy Percival	24	70/81	$113K/ARB97
            1B JT Snow 26	74/88	$113K/ARB95
            $100K
Well what we got back was a competent starter in Leftwich who's had his ups and downs but has excellent control and endurance, I believe he can be a solid guy in our rotation, and we've got him cheap for a couple of years.

Percival has a ton of talent but has been wild, he'll likely finish this year in AAA with an eye on back of the pen spot next year, possibly even closer.

Snow is still developing but he's a solid hitter with some decent pop and can play a great first base. It's likely he goes down to AAA for the rest of the year as there is no need to rush him.

I hate giving up Ordonez but he was the 4th in our core of young outfielders and it was probably best to use his chip as soon as possible.

            Review
Quantity over quality is maybe what it is, but we're stockpiling arms and hoping that they can blossom when it comes time for them to go. We added 4 pitchers with talent enough to pitch at the major league level as well as a real solid first basemen who I don't think will command near the contract Karros was asking for. Losing Vanderwall & Karros will hurt our lineup for sure but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I am certain we are done trading, I really have no desire to move Tanana or Smith now as even though we suck, we would suck so much harder without them.

JT Snow heads down to AAA. Gene Larkin is our new everyday first basemen and Chris Gwynn is our everyday left fielder. Curtis is in right field. OF Joe Nunnaly is on our bench.

Our pitching staff will say roughly the same at this point except Bowen replaces Seminara in the starting rotation, Seminara heads down to AAA. Gary Buckles takes AJ Sagers spot in our bullpen. Leftwich goes to AAA and Percival to AA. Rudy Seanez should be ready in about a week. Our only issue of concern is finding some strong lefty arms for the pen, but that will likely come in the offseason.
            I luv British womenz.

Chuck Smith got rocked for 7 runs in 2.1 IP and Randy Tomlin scattered 10 hits as they rolled to a win. Larkin had 4 hits, he's excited. Not a good way to start the 2nd half of the season.

                JULY 14TH: Marlins (33-57) Vs Expos (48-40)
Saunders went 6 innings allowing just 2 runs, our pen pitched 3 scoreless innings. Larkin, Guillen & Gwynn each had 3 hits, Guillen had 4 RBI as we romped Brian Barnes.

                JULY 15TH: Marlins (34-57) Vs Expos (48-41)
Tanana went 7 strong innings, giving up just 3 runs. We trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the 8th but a Castilla homer tied it and then we strung some hits together off of Jeff Shaw to take a 5-3 lead. Bedrosian threw the final 4 outs and we win the series and are playing pretty decent ball right now.

Bowen went 6+ innings giving up 4 runs, but really it was just one dissasterous inning, he did ok. We just couldn't get the big hits off of Tom Browning as they won a close contest. Tough loss.

We jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and Chuck Smith made it stand, going 8.1 IP before Bedrosian closed out a 1 run win. Very nice start, win and bounce back. I loved the effort.

Saunders went a brilliant 7+ innings but Fassero no hit us into the 7th and we couldn't get anything across till the ninth. Our pen let in 3 runs but most of it was me getting cute and trying to intentionaly walk too many people. I did a bad job on this one.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Tanana went 6 and gave up 4 runs while Ken Hill was shutting us down. Down 6-1 in the ninth we put together a huge rally that culminated in the go ahead run scoring off of a Wetteland wild pitch to give us a 7-6 lead. Bedrosian came in and with 1 out and 1 on he allowed a game winning HR to Moises Alou. Effin heartbreak. Ughhh. Castilla had a homer and Guillen and Goodwin had 3 hits. Damnit.

Bedrosian would allow 3 in the ninth, blowing another save. But we would pound Wetteland and Roger Mason in the 11th for 6 runs to salvage a game from the series. Nilsson added 3 hits.

Financialy we're starting to bleed. We dropped just over $500K in July and I expect less revenue in each of the next 2 months due to the fact that we suck and who would wanna watch us.

Not much analysis is needed for our offense really. I'm not dissapointed in Nilsson & Castilla but I do wish they'd be better then they have been. Goodwin has consistently slid each month of the season but he's still developing. I'm not sure he's a leadoff hitter though and that's a concern. Guillen and Larkin have been on fire lately and that's nice but does nothing for our future.

A little worried about Chuck Smith & Tony Saunders. I'm counting on those guys to be solid and they just have too many control issues. The bullpen has settled itself out some and I like what i'm seeing out of Bowen. All in all i've been ok with our staff in the recent weeks.

                            AROUND THE LEAGUE IN JULY

                            TRADES
A pretty big deal saw the contending Braves send 19 year old SP Kevin Millwood, 78/89, to the Reds for veteran SS Barry Larkin, 30, 89/89. It caused quite the stir in Cincinnati when the beloved Larkin was traded but the Braves gave up a great prospect.

The Reds continued to deal as they shipped veteran 2B Juan Samuel to the Rangers in exchange for 3 prospects. The Reds received RP Julio Santana, 21, 61/76 & SS Kelly Dransfeldt, 19, 49/73 and RF Cliff Brumbaugh, 20, 59/73.

And finaly, veteran SP Tim Belcher, 32, 84/84 was sent from the Reds to the Indians in exchange for prospects SP Chad Ogea, 23, 69/81 and RP Joe Roa, 22, 67/78.

The Mariners attempted to bolster their lineup by acquiring veteran Royals Catcher Mike McFarlane, 30, 79/79 in exchange for RP Brian Fuentes, 18, 65/79.

Houston made 2 deals. First they sent 3B prospect Phil Nevin to the Tigers in exchange for Travis Fryman, then they sent RP Brian Williams, 25, 71/81 to the Blue Jays for CF Devon White, 31, 81/81.

                            • I've been simming some games and starting games and then simming them out if things get tedious. I'm trying to push thru and finish the season cause right now it's the front office side of things that really have me excited. I so badly wanna play with my young guys next year and it's a chore to play out this crappy season but i'm gonna muscle on.
