I was 12 years old when the Phillies won the World Series in 1980...it's been a long wait. I don't know of this..."it was there right" thing. Division champions maybe, but the World Series belonged to the Dodgers and Yankees for most of my childhood.

Nah, i'm just saying I didn't think they could lose, the mind of a child. It never occured to me that they might lose. One of my first vivid memories as a child was watching the 80 world series on my moms lap on our friggin 10 inch black and white tv, lol.

On May 1st we're in the stretch of a 7 game losing streak that puts us at 14-15 and Rybe Sandberg has a knee issue that will force him to miss a month.

On May 25th we've moved to 29-21 and 6.5 games out of 1st but now Alan Wiggins will miss about 3 weeks with an ankle issue.
Steve Comer has a 3.18 era, he appears to be the real deal, lol. Our pitching has been real solid so far.
Walker, Ripken and Firova are struggling mightily however.

The very next day Brett Butler breaks his wrist and will miss a month. Beeee UUUU Teeee Full.

Yikes, I just tried to sign an extension for Steve Comer and his 2.97 ERA and i realized we're in debt. ARGHHHH!
We ship 5 players, 1B Kevin Maas, 1B Archi Cianfrocco, LF Bo Jackson, 1B Jim Lindeman and RP Dan Murphy to the Dodgers for $800,000 in cash. We had no choice.

Comers asking price has come up of course. He now wants $660K per year over 3 years, we give it to him.

We take the opportunity to also sign Alan Wiggins to a 3 year deal at $360K per year.

On June 27th we're 45-33 and 12 games out of first. We have everyone healthy now. I don't expect a playoff push but I wanna keep winning. Andujar is super struggling, his era is 5.23.

It's August 1st, our record is 60-45, our team ERA is 4.04, lowest in the league. Those injuries really hurt us I think.

On September 1st we stand at 73-60 and 10 games out of first.

We finish the season at 90-72, exactly where I had hoped, and yet I feel like a chance slipped past us, our pitching was awesome this year.

The good news is that thanks to the salary dump/cash infusion, we only lost $400K this year, leaving us $880K in the black.

1985 Arbitration Cases & Expiring Contracts
CF Glenn Burke wants an $80K raise for a 2 year deal, we give it to him.

RP Joe Edelen won his arbitration case and gets a pay bump of about $160K.

Almost all of our guys in their last years are pitchers.

Tom Henke wants 4 years at $770K per, we gotta do it.

RP Ron Musselman wants the same kind of pay, we can't extend him though, not for a middle reliever, no matter how solid he's been.

RP Willie Hernandez is in the same boat. Damnit.

SP Atlee Hammaker will go for an additional 2 years at only a $55K increase, we do it.

We decide to sign Willie Hernandez to a 3 year deal at $640K per.

1985 Spring Training Notes
I'm as enthused about this team as I ever have been. My lineup is really strong, and I have 4 guys in AAA who are all gonna be able to either contribute or bring me help in trade. My pitching is young and solid, especially my pen. I'm a little worried if trading Andujar will have an adverse effect but I think my starting 5 is still really good. I'm amped.

SP Mike Campbell, a real good prospect for us, tore his rotator cuff. Oh snap. He's out all year.

If i'm anywhere close to the top in the middle of summer I will be able to go out and get what I need. We had to bump up our system expenses and as such are about $4 Million over budget but i expect us to exceep our projected revenue so i'm not all that worried. I do have $1.2M in cash available.

1985 Regular Season
2 games in, 2-0 and Ryne Sandberg will miss a month with an inflamed rotator cuff. Booo.

Wow, on May 4th we're 21-7 and 1.5 games out of first, Sandberg is back. Sanderson and Romanick have been lights out so far.

Ughhh. It's May 30th. Our record is 33-19 and 3 games out of first, we're on a 3 game losing streak and we just lost Keith Hernandez to a dislocated hip for 46 days. Mega We bring up Strawberry but he'll just be a bench player for now as Maler and Walker will split 1B and DH duties.
Sandberg is only hitting .223, Ripken .178 and Maler .205 in limited duty, they need to pick it up. SP Steve Comer, fresh off a nice contract, is of course sucking it up, so is Hammaker. Other than that we're all playing real well.

On June 3rd, the day of the amateur draft, we've just taken 2 in a row from the Angels to move to 37-20 and in first place the latest in a season we've ever been. The bad news is that despite averaging over 50,000 per game we've still already lost $1.4 Million this year and are $150,000 in the red. We'll probably need to move some minor leaguers at the trade deadline and get some cash.

MAJOR UGHHHH. It's July 4th, we're 54-30 and 2.5 games behind and we've lost SP Ron Romanick who was 8-3 with a 3.34 era for 2 and a half months with a broken elbow, fuck all man. Mike Warren will be called up to replace him but this is a major blow. If we can stay close for the rest of the month i'll make a move to add a pitcher, but if we fall down i'm not gonna make a big investment. This sucks ass.

July 15th, 58-33 and 1.5 games back. Hernandez is back.

July 22nd, 64-33 and 1 game lead in the AL West.

July 25th, 67-33 and a 3.5 game lead. I'm torn as to wether I should add a piece. I need to get some cash as well.
I need to go out and get a real stud SP, now is the time to do it. Unfortunately I need to get out of debt before I can add any salary.

I ship RP's Heredia, Slusarski, Elvira and CF Milt Thompson to the Cubs for $800,000.

I then turn around and ship SP Mike Warren and SP Juan Guzman to Toronto for 28 year old Dave Stieb, rated 92 and having an excellent season for the lowley Jays. Stieb has a 3.56 era on the year. He's making $660K for the next 3 years. We up our ticket prices slightly as we head down the stretch. Man, I hope this works out.

On August 15th we're 79-41 and 3.5 games ahead of California.

On September 5th we're 93-44, 4.5 games ahead of the Angels and I can smell a division title, oh man!

Christ almighty. September 26th, we're 107-48 and about to clinch the division title when Greg Walker ruptures a disc in his back and is done for the year! Walkers 42 Home Runs led the team. Tom Henke has a broken bone in his hand and is shut down but should be ready for the playoffs.

On September 30th we win our 108th game of the year and clinch the Division title. California has 100 wins, sucks to be them mang.

We close the season 109-53, winning the division by 6 games over a California team that won 103 games themselves.
Our opponent in the playoffs are the 103-59 Detroit Tigers. Before we head to the post season let's have a look at our stats from this year.
