1983 Arbitration Cases & Expiring Contracts
2B Kim Allen wants a $40K pay raise, we don't even make an offer we just release him.
    SS Larry Bowa retired.
LF Dan Thomas only wants a slight pay raise to stay with us but we feel that $300K could be better spent somewhere else.
RP Ron Musselman wants almost $250K more for a mid 5 ERA! His ratings are good enough that i'd like to keep him so I counter with a $200K offer, a $150,000 pay raise. We win the arbitration hearing.
RP Enrique Romo is 35 years old, wants a $170,000 pay raise and has sucked the past 2 years. Bye Bye Enrique.

1983 Players In Their Last Contract Years
Oh man, this is gonna be no fun, so many guys are in there last seasons, let's go 1 by 1.

SP Scott Sanderson is willing to sign for 4 years at $920,000 per, it's a $400,000 pay raise but we need to lock him up.

1B Keith Hernandez wants a Million dollar a year raise, RF Dave Winfield wants a $1.5 Million dollar a year raise.

We need to trim some major salary. 3B Buddy Bell is making $800K a year and while I love him, 3B Dave Edler is probably ready for a big league job so we go about shopping Buddy.

Chicago White Sox offer us young CF Ellis Burks, a 19 year old rated 66/93 in exchange for Bell, we pull the trigger. That's $820K off the books.

CF Rupert Jones knee injury is still not fully healed and it's clear that he's not gonna be the same player he was, not that he ever blossomed to begin with. We'll see if we can do something with him. LOL. He has a no trade clause, I never noticed that. He'll only accept a trade to the Rangers. Lets see if we can give him away.

Heh, we ship Rupert and SP Greg Matthews to the Rangers in exchange for $100,000.

So we've saved about $1.3 Million in salary with those moves.

Given that Sanderson and Hammaker had solid years last season I think it may be time to move Jerry Ruess. He struggled last year and despite his good ratings, is 33 years old. Lets see if we have any takers.

The Cardinals offer us RP Joe Edelen who has been real solid for them the past 2 years. He's 27, rated 85/86. We do it.

We extend Closer Willie Hernandez for 2 more years at a $200K per year raise.

Ok, time to cowboy up. 1B Hernandez gets a 6 year extension at $1.6 Million per year. Dave Winfield gets 3 more years at $2.2 Million per season.

SP Mike Krukow is in his last year but i'm not comfortable extending him, he just hasn't pitched well.

C Ernie Whitt is in his last season but Dan Firova is just about ready to take over the C job. I'm putting Whitt on the block. We ship Ernie to the Dodgers for $100,000.

RF Dave Kingman is in his final year, we'll let him play it out and walk.

RP Ron Musselman wants $290K for 3 years, a $90,000 raise. Ok.

RP Bob Stoddard had a good season and 1 month before his injury, but his ratings took a hit so i'm not resigning him yet.

C Duffy Dyer and SS Jimmy Sexton will play out this year and i likely won't resign them.

RP Mike Willis and his $340,000 salary have no place on our team. We ship him to the Angels for $200,000 cash.
    I luv British womenz.

      1983 Free Agency
The only thing i'm really looking for is a sold defensive CF and a cheap Starting Pitcher.

CF Glen Burke fits the equation nicely, he's a chop hitter with decent speed and defense and only wants $180K for 2 years.
We arn't able to get that starter we wanted but oh well. We head into Spring Training with an infusion of young players who'll be on the major league roster this year.
      I luv British womenz.

1983 Spring Training And Season Outlook
We have a few new starters this year. C Dan Firova takes over full time. 3B Dave Edler and DH Jim Maler will both also be regulars. Our bench is thin again as Milt Thompson and rookie signing 2B Brian Giles are both very weak.

I'm dissapointed in Ripkens development. I want him at SS for us now but I think he'll be best served by a full year of AAA, the last thing i want to do is bring him up and have him bottom out in the mid 80's.

Pitching wise with Hernadez, Henke and Musselman as our top 3 in the pen I hope we're solid. Our starting staff is once again a question. I have high hopes for our top 4 but Andujar has been slowly going down for a few years, he never quite attained that ace status i had hoped. Hopefully Sanderson continues to grow into that role and Krukow and Hammaker can be solid. We're $3 Million over budget and have $1 Million in cash. Attendance has slowly risen every year so I think i'll make it thru the season in the black. IN THE BLACK JEFFY! BLACK GOOD!
        I luv British womenz.

1983 was Cal's rookie year, a year in which he helped lead the Orioles to a World Series win against the...Phillies...uggh.

Yeah, I remember that. As a kid the notion that the Phillies could lose never crossed my mind. I just thought the world series was their right. I was wrongo.

On May 13th we're 22-19, 6 games out of first.

On June 7th we stand at 33-29, 12 games out of first. The Angels are a monster this year.
On the bright side, our pitching save for Krukow has been phenomonal. The highest ERA is Sandersons 3.86.
Willie Hernandez has struggled as the closer though and Tom Henke will replace him.
Cal Ripken is booming at AAA as I had hoped, he's up to 87/93.

                Amateur Draft Time!
Round 1: SP Jose Rijo 64/88
Round 2: SP Steve Sparks 47/91
Round 3: RP Mark Guthrie 47/86
Round 4: RP Gil Heredia 48/83
                Round 5: 1B Kevin Maas 50/79
                Round 6: C Steve Decker 53/68

On July 2nd our record is 48-37 and we're 10.5 games out of first. Our team ERA is actually below 4!

C Dan Firova however tore his ankle up He's out for the rest of the year and will likely take a nice rating hit.
We don't want to rush Daulton to the big leagues so we decide to call up just drafted Steve Decker to be our backup. It's not like we had great expectations for him anyway.

On August 1st we're 55-49, i'd love to get a winning season. Our ERA is slowly growing though.

We finish the season 84-78, 15 games back in 5th place. We only lost about half a million, leaving us with half a million in cash left, not bad. I think we can build on this, especially with our system as loaded as it is.
                I luv British womenz.

                      1984 Arbitration And Expiring Contracts
RF Dave Kingman only wants $80K, a $170K pay cut, per 2 years to stay, yeah, we can do that.

SS Jimmy Sexton pretty much lost his starting job this year and wants a healthy raise, sorry Jimmy, you're gone.

2B Ryne Sandberg is up for arbitration, We win the hearing and only have to pay him $600K instead of his asked for $840K.

C Duffy Dyer is 38, has declining and bad ratings and wants a raise. Bye Duffman.

SS/2B Jose Baez is a real good defensive slap hitter who serves us well off the bench, we win arbitration he gets $180K.

2B Brian Giles is a nothing, he should of stayed in high school. I release him.

SP Mike Krukow wants a pay raise, I want a better pitcher. Here since the beggining but it's time to move on, we release him.

RP Bob Stoddard had a solid if unspectacular season coming off an elbow injury. He wants nearly a $100K raise over 3 years, I give it to him.

SP Steve Comer is coming off 2 excellent seasons for us. He asks for $480K, we offer $320K and win, still a nice pay raise.

RP Rickey Keeton has never pitched well for us, he's gone.

Players Entering The Final Year Of Their Contracts
2B Ryne Sandberg is the first guy and we're able to strike a nice deal with him, we give him $900K a year for 7 years.

SP Joaquin Andujar is an interesting case. He's only 30, had his best year in 6 seasons last year, and has solid ratings. He wants a long term deal but we can talk him down, he wants a nice raise though. We go 3 years at $900K, a $400K raise.

It may bite us in the ass but i'm not prepared to give 29 year old SP Steve Comer a long term deal.

Infielder Jose Baez wants $260K for 3 seasons. I'm willing to do that.

Only CF Glenn Burke is left and he aint gettin no extension or deal of anykind, so only he and Comer can walk next year.

This leaves us $1.3 Million over budget, but I think it's time to take a risk and maybe do some things.

                          1984 Free Agency & Trades
We set out sights on Atlanta leadoff man Brett Butler, he's a great defender with speed and hitting ability galore.
We send CF Ellis Burks, SP Tim Belcher and RP Mark Guthrie to the Braves to get the deal done.

Other than that we don't do anything. We're content to promote from within with everything else.

Unhappy with a few things, Edler, Firova and Maler have not progressed, or actually have regressed. Ripken is bouncing around ratings wise but i can't keep him in AAA forever, the SS job is his. Still our lineup and bench are probably as strong as ever with Kingman, Maler and Baez on the pine and Greg Walker getting a shot as everyday DH.

On the pitching front i'm taking a chance on bringing up Bruce Robbins to be our 5th starter, he could probably use another year at AAA. Todd Worrell will be at the back end of our pen while he could also use more seasoning but i'm not gonna add salary.

If, and it's a big if, but if our pitching can be as good as it was last year I could see this team getting to 90 wins. I don't know if that's good enough to win the division but it's what i'm aiming for.
                              I luv British womenz.
