@Jave: This is just another part of the game which you have to plan for. This is Front Office Football. Finances are something you have to put into your strategy. There are plenty of GMs who see that their coaches' contracts are running out and adjust ticket prices, player contracts, etc in order to have the best financial year they can and have the best chance to bring back their coaches.
Complaining that other GMs have better financial strategy is equivalent to complaining that your draft picks didn't turn out when others' did, or complaining that you got outbid on someone in free agency IMO.Current GM Fresno Warthogs

Find me ONE coach in the NFL, who took his team to the conference championship game one year, and then bailed the following year for a higher contract? No, I didn't say fired, I said he LEFT. It's not realistic. Entire coaching staff's don't just bail one game from the Superbowl. Has it EVER happened?Originally posted by Mike17 View Post@Jave: This is just another part of the game which you have to plan for. This is Front Office Football. Once again, Ill chime in with my yearly:
'This sucks. I went to the Imperial Bowl, and I had 60 percent attendance the following year, even though I lowered ticket prices, so I will never be able to afford a really good coach. It's not about managing finances, because I am in such a shit location that I will never EVER be able to sell out and afford better coaches.'
Done ranting for the year.

Rex Ryan was defensive coordinator for the ravens in 2008, lost in the AFC championship game, then heads to greener pastures in New York.Originally posted by Jave View PostFind me ONE coach in the NFL, who took his team to the conference championship game one year, and then bailed the following year for a higher contract? Lovie Smith was defensive coordinator for the Rams in 2003, lost in the divisional round, then heads to Chicago in 2004. Also signed a big contract with the bears just a few days after the rams' season ended.Originally posted by WikipediaFollowing a late season collapse in which the New York Jets missed the playoffs after losing four of their final five games, the team fired head coach Eric Mangini.[28] The team interviewed a host of candidates however, the contract, which was valued at approximately $11.5 million over the course of four years, was ultimately offered to Ryan about an hour following Baltimore's loss to the Steelers in the AFC Championship
Those were just 2 that I found in 10 minutes of searching.Last edited by Mike17; 08-04-2011, 09:58 PM.Current GM Fresno Warthogs

The biggest problem for those with no $$$ is a focus on selling tickets (attendance) over making money (profit). It might take a minute to figure out but they aren't the same thing. If you've got OVER 90% attendance then you're probably doing something WRONG.
And don't look to the Phantoms for the blueprint since you won't see much as I don't really focus on making $$$ in this game though I get by. I just "traded" one of the league's best OC's for a nobody (as far as coaching goes) so that shows how much I care about Coach ratings.

I'm starting to become torn on this coaching issue. It's almost like Jim fucked it up so bad that it almost makes sense. Mike pointed out a few coaches, granted not head coaches, who left for higher money. It does happen, and it's not unheard of.
Maybe not specifically leaving a team after a conference championship, as you'd have only 4 coaches per season possible, and their contract would have to expire that very year, which makes the chances even less, but leaving for more money is normal.
What isn't normal is the financial system in FOF. It sucks plain and simple. It's dumb you can't re-sign coaches before their contract is up, the ticket sales related to wins is horribly flawed, and renovating your stadium to add new seats that greatly increase ticket revenue is next to impossible without 'fan support' because my team would rather lose $80 million a year than pay more than 50% of renovation costs.
However, because of those flaws, coaches seem to shuffle around probably as much if not just a little more than the NFL. Allowing us to re-sign coaches would completely remove any chance of a guy like Sprouse ever leaving Cleveland.... unless he added AI to each coach to give them personality and shit, but that's asking a ton from Jim. I'm just happy FOF runs at this point..
I'd love a better coaching / financial system, but the game is a joke and needs far more work than that at this point.Steve Beans - Houston Renegades

I think it is only 'bad' for multiplayer.
FOF was not designed with it in mind and it shows.
Its the only one out there that does real football. Madden and stuff is pretty, but its laughable compared to FOF, as far as simulating real football goes.
I will say I would be willing to drop the $$$s again if Jim would quite playing Up Your River and improve every aspect of the game. He clearly needs to get some outside help on the interfaces and such, but hes not gonna stop playing UYR and he definatly will not get outside help. So its looking like FOF is the best we got.sigpic

Im with Jave on this one and have been in the past. Its a bunch of bullshit to lose coaches without getting a chance to negotiate.
If a guy leaves for a promotion that is different. There needs to be a new rule.
If there isn't a new rule then there should be a way we can designate one of our coordinators as Asst. Head Coach. Only way you can hire him away from me is to make him your head coach. Just like the NFL does.Last edited by BOSS; 08-05-2011, 03:56 AM.2003,2004,2007,2008,2010,2013,2024,2025,2031,2037, 2038 and 2039 NC North Division Champions, 2012 and 2017 Wild Card

Do coaches have a preference on contract length? Are we all offering 5 years to the top ones in fear of another "Coach FA" at the end of the contract?

I am not saying what is the right way to do this in the RDFL league I play in we have the following rules for staff signing 1:
HC can only be signed by the team he was in charge of the previous season.
OC/DC can only be signed as OC/DC/HC by the team they were with the previous season, however they can be offered contracts to be a HC by any other team.
Scout is fair game so anyone can sign them.
Stage 2 and 3 are everyone is fair game..
Whether this is the way to go I don't know but it is what is used in that league.
