I agree that timed picks are the way to go if we are going to have a board draft. I am pretty sure alot of the owners will not have the flexability to check the forums 15-20 times day to see if it's their pick, but if they know when they pick it would be more to their benefit. 1 hour time frames in rounds 1 & 2 work out really well and you can half that for the later rounds.

The nice thing about this board is you can send your PMs to multiple people at once. On the old boards you'd have to send an individual PM to each person.
If you go this route, identify your helpers early so people know where to send lists if they won't be present.
For Chris's point above, yeah, you might miss out on a crazy trade offer, but ultimately if you send a list in you'll get the guy you want and since there aren't terribly many owners out there overpaying to move up, I don't see there being much of a disadvantage. Certainly you'd like to be there to see what offers you get, but you'd be in the same boat on an auto draft as well unless you stumbled in when your pick was up, which you'd have no predictability on anyway.
We did move to 20 min limits in the USFL on rounds 6-7. Worked fine since a lot of guys don't care what they get at that point and skip putting in lists.

This happens every year and makes owners want to pull their hair out. You got three quarters of the league paying attention, and one or two owners, knowing they are picking within a 3-5 hour time limit, for reason unknown, do NOT submit a list and the league ends up waiting half the day for them to make their pick.Originally posted by dberner30 View Postthis approach works...did it USFL and RNFL...go with one hour window and its a set time...the part where people get frustrated is when we have set times and 10 of us pick within a short window and then we wait 10 hours for a guy...all in all it adds a sense of predictability to the draft times and the draft length...i recall if being 1 hour for rds 1-2 and then 30 minutes for 3-5 and 20 minutes for 6-7...i also did a lot of draft facilitating under this system and it makes draft manager's job easier...the 6th and 7th are a bitch tho because guys just check out and you are making a lot of commish picks there...
Or my favorite is when the league waits hours for an owner to make his pick, you see him log in, and 5 minutes later, he logs off without making a pick Then an hour or more later, he logs back in and finally makes the pick.
It happens every year so I am not even bitching about it anymore.

We have to start at some point though and since this is a weekend league if there's a time that we have to choose to force attendance it only makes sense to do it on the weekend.Originally posted by Chris Rex View PostThe only problem I see with a Set-time approach is with the first and maybe 2nd round. We're starting this on a Saturday. There's a good chance people may be out in the evening or for large parts of the day, leaving them to have to rely on their 'backup list' ALREADY, and not really have a chance to make any trades for what may be the most important pick they have. This is assuming the set times are fairly close together...
We'll have plenty of time for the first 2 rounds though so don't worry.

Haha. What I don't get is, if you may not be online WHY NOT SUBMIT A LIST?? For the first round the list has to have a MAX of 30 players. Thats not tough. But I have seen the league wait hours for a guy with a top 10 pick!! Is it really that tough to submit a list of 10 freekin players!!Originally posted by JesterBlaze View Post:withstupid:

I like the set schedule...but since the draft starts tomorrow, I can't guarantee that I will be available at a set time....Now if this was set up a week ago and had time to put a list together...well..then...that's on me. I also think draft lists are great by the 3rd and 4th round....not so much in the first round. Those picks rely on how the flow of the draft is going and can't really be set ahead of time.MIAMI VICE - 2074

personally, if i was the commish or in charge of running the draft i would shut off trading from the 5th round on. i know that won't be a popular idea, but since a message board draft will take longer than a utility draft you gotta cut corner somewhere. other than kickers (*cough* Chuck Morris*cough*) it's really hit or miss after the 4th round anyway, no need to hold up the draft cuz you want to move up 3 spots to take that "gotta have" guy. that's just me. or, i would make it so that the last two rounds are auto picked, that way we can focus more on the early rounds that matter. in a perfect world the draft is completed in a timely fashion, but that won't be possible this year. we should take steps to ensure that the more important rounds get their due focus, and the less important rounds are wrapped up at a brisk pace.

HA, if you had your way we'd "recommend sim" every game, only bid on FA studs, and now skip 3/7 of the draft. This is an interactive game, not a viewing experience.
Every time you want to skip something you should realize that that is the exact something that you don't understand and should be studying. <- This ain't meant to sound harsh. Simply a fact.
You're preaching to the choir here. :lol:Originally posted by Jave View PostHaha. What I don't get is, if you may not be online WHY NOT SUBMIT A LIST?? What? Mabe I just misunderstood you. You pick 10th right? You get to pick the 10th overall player in the draft and you are saying that you cannot submit a list of the top 10 players you want in case you cannot be online when your pick comes up??Originally posted by Argot View PostI like the set schedule...but since the draft starts tomorrow, I can't guarantee that I will be available at a set time....Now if this was set up a week ago and had time to put a list together...well..then...that's on me. I'm not speaking just for me here...at 10...prolly could come up with ten...but if I was 25th...strategy changes sometimes depending on who is left...especially if you have another pick...that's all I'm saying...and don't really care to debate the issue, just felt the need to annoy you : )...
Anyway. I am I one to check the boards about every 2-3 hours during the draft...I'ts by far my favorite part of the IFL. Just wish I was better at it. Would love a live draft but I know that's not happenning....
And in regard to the "auto-pick" after the first 4 rounds. Do you realize how many starters in the IFL have been picked after the 4th round. That's where I do my best work....See Bo Holmes...MIAMI VICE - 2074
