ok, this looks basically like we're going to have a board draft. it has been made known that suicane is handling the draft, and if we need to go to a board draft format we'll have to email lists to suicane and matt. can we get some concrete info from suicane/matt as to what plans they have, any special instructions or rules we need to know about. i'm assuming the same clock applies between picks, correct? maybe just take this time to go over the draft plan since it'll be different this year without the utility. ok bye.

I will check with Matt what his schedule is like. I will have an Official draft thread up by tommorow at midnight at the latest.
Lists and wishes can be sent to me for sure and possibly to Matt if he is available to help.
My email is Suicane At Verizon dot net
I will make it clear in the draft thread but I want to make it clear here as well, Jeff is not running the draft, he is going to be way too busy to deal with a board draft, so don't send him lists or expect him to have answers. I am in full control, and hopefully Matt will be able to be in co-full control, lol.I luv British womenz.

The old one thread for picks and only picks and one thread for discussion always worked before these here fancy pants draft utes.

I'd suggest hard times for every pick to keep it smoother rather than running times based on the previous pick. (i.e. St. Louis picks 1.14 at 3 pm EST, not St. Louis picks 6 hours after 1.13 whenever that is). That way a guy can just be sure to be around in that time frame instead of checking the forums 20 times a day.

Have you or anyone else experienced that kind of draft before? My only leeryness is that it would actually slow us down tremendously for the first few rounds.
Say we're in a round were the time limit is 3 hours, if an owner knows his pick wont be up till 10pm and he waits till that time to make his pick we could concievably go an entire day with only 5 picks being made.
I know it sucks, but people will have to check the board often, it's just going to have to be that way no matter which way we go. I'm also doubley aware that you guys in Iraq are gonna affected adversly the most.I luv British womenz.

I'm all for a fast draft. People need to get on the ball, especially when their life is on the stake by their choice of 1st rounder.Originally posted by Suicane View PostHave you or anyone else experienced that kind of draft before? I know I was pissed as hell last year when I had to wait all-day for a couple picks to move. Can't remember but is was awful slow between 6-12. Can't remember who was the hold up, anyway, that's not my point. Anyway I gave up waiting and went out and got piss pour drunk. But that was my fault. I actually think Sato might excel in the 3-4.

We do a posted time draft in the USFL. The first round is broken down into 2 days, 1 hour per pick, all other rounds last a day and pick deadlines are a half hour apart. There's a utility there as well, but we did it with only the board twice before as well.
You'll need 4-5 guys who can check the forum regularly, and can post picks from people's lists if necessary. It actually runs quite smooth and isn't frantic. It gives people more of an opportunity to make trades the first day as well. The only downside is it lasts 8 days, but is infinitely easier to manage without a utility. I was a draft commisioner over there, our only headaches were making sure someone was around to post a pick from a list, and also to pick for a guy if they missed their deadline.

To add another possiblility to what Hawkster's saying some of us, like myself, could guarantee that I'd be there at my pick and if there's a set schedule and I KNOW that I'm picking at, say 6:00pm, then I can guarantee to have my pick in within a much shorter time frame - I'm thinking 20 minutes. I can guarantee this ahead of time for every one of my picks and will not take longer than 20 minutes or cry if I miss my pick - IF I know ahead of time exactly when that pick will be.
If we get a big enough list of "I'll def be there" we can cut the time down dramatically. I'm also thinking the guys with the most picks have the most incentive so I myself would be using this option for 4 picks in the first two rounds (cutting 4 picks down to 1hr and 20 minutes if this time frame is used).
And I just thought of trades based on how the draft is going and that could be a big problem with this idea. I leave it up here still for discussion.
BTW - Someone make Hawkster a banner!

this approach works...did it USFL and RNFL...go with one hour window and its a set time...the part where people get frustrated is when we have set times and 10 of us pick within a short window and then we wait 10 hours for a guy...all in all it adds a sense of predictability to the draft times and the draft length...i recall if being 1 hour for rds 1-2 and then 30 minutes for 3-5 and 20 minutes for 6-7...i also did a lot of draft facilitating under this system and it makes draft manager's job easier...the 6th and 7th are a bitch tho because guys just check out and you are making a lot of commish picks there...GM Wichita Outlaws

Small negative to set-time drafting
The only problem I see with a Set-time approach is with the first and maybe 2nd round. We're starting this on a Saturday. There's a good chance people may be out in the evening or for large parts of the day, leaving them to have to rely on their 'backup list' ALREADY, and not really have a chance to make any trades for what may be the most important pick they have. This is assuming the set times are fairly close together... to speed things up (otherwise I see no need to have a set time list if we're going to set the times 6 hours apart anyway..)I should be around for my pick regardless, but if i was picking later and was gone for a few hours prior to my pick, I would be at a disadvantage because I couldnt see who had gone, who was left, etc. Doesnt matter so much in later rounds relying on a list, but early would pretty much blow. Other than that, I think the benefits far outway the negatives from round 3-7 for example.
Anyway, just my 2 cents...
