Rockwell has shown me a lot in his limited action. I was tempted to keep playing him when Stanfield first came back from injury to keep Tobias' starts down in an attempt to bring down his contract demands in the off-season. Four less starts should help there.

A decision hasn't been made yet btw - on QB or other positions (like starting my backup DEs to get rid of their attitude problems).
to be clear this is the post that started my comments....the motivation on sitting the QB was as quoted above...im not trying to accuse you or make stuff up.

I was banking on this being the common thought when I first posted and in hindsight sooo wish I didn't mention the contract thing.

From my perspective here's the result:

Ad: There's all-chocolate sundaes with a cherry down the street for $5.

Jester: I really like chocolate sundaes but I'm not sure it's worth $5. Maybe it is, I'll decide.

Ad: This just in... the sundaes have a chocolate dipped cherry on top.

Jester: Chocolate covered is good but I'm still deciding.

A.D.D. interpretation: Jester's willing to pay $5 for a chocolate covere'd cherry!! Misread all about it!!!
Edited to reflect that I've now read dberner's post right before mine and that this is not a direct post to him but more a representation of how little the contract issue weighs on my decision.

        • dont feel shame for admitting what you were thinking... the difference between FOF and the NFL is that FOF doesnt have the extra pressures of getting whacked if things go poorly...so if you make the move and your QB stays healthy and you resign him for a better deal but end up missing out on home field or the bye and get beat in the first rd of the playoffs you cant get fired so its all good...in the real NFL that decision making will cost you games and frankly players probably holding out or demanding trades...in the end you get fired and sit on the couch instead of running a team...we have no consequence for that tactic here other than owner debates...

like i said before if the league doesnt care then I dont care...i play to win (maybe i should admit to losing on purpose since im 4-8) every game...im probably getting close to changing some playing time to look at some player development since the season is down the drain...not sure how i will do that yet but will get around to getting more playing time for the youth...that is a normal outcome for a season once you have 10 losses in the bank....not when you have 10 wins.

Or if you have a sense of "team" over "players" you might start Tom Brady (Bernard Rockwell) over the better known veteran Drew Bledsoe (Tobias Stanfield). But that'd never happen in the NFL due to the extreme pressure.

It's funny (to me). I've been thinking since this whole thing began: "I wish we just fired GM's after poor seasons. I'm in the spotlight yet all the GM's that perennially pass up on QB's in the draft and [enter about 5 different gameplan flaws that I witness on such a weekly level that it's highly unlikely that it's 'FOF taking over'] get to stay on season after season causing uneven divisions then I probably wouldn't be in the middle of this since most would trust that I'm fully intent on winning it all this season."

            • considering the performance in wichita....i might get fired...i looked over the standings for the league since the beginning and i managed 1 winning season with a division title, 1 season at 8-8 and then 4 yrs with losing records...i remember one year i lost 3 qbs to injury in like 6 weeks...another year i lost 2 qbs... other than that i just stunk it up like this season...

i guess if Matt millen can keep his job i can keep mine..

this year has been brutal...8 losses by a total of 30 points difference...if you throw out the 10 pt loss the other 7 were be less than 3 pts per game total...very frustrating to watch play out...i often think it would be better to just get blasted...at least you wouldnt feel like your team was a good team...my headcoach must have a hidden rating for blowing close games...it would be like a 99 score for screwing them up...

I've stayed out of this because Jester is my RL friend so obviously people are going to think i'm siding with him because of it. I just want to quote this because there definitely is a difference between the real NFL and FOF. You're right, if he sat Stanfield in the middle of a winning streak in the NFL, and that caused them the playoffs, heads would most likely roll.

This isn't the NFL though because in that league you can make all types of adjustments to better prepare yourself for the playoffs down the stretch while still trying to win every game. If you have a large lead in a game, you can run more which rarely causes QB injuries (how many times have people seen random injuries in FOF, like a 30 week torn tricep on a false start call). Then, towards the end of the game, coaches have tons of control when to yank the starter and keep him healthy. Playing time in FOF is screwed up at best.

All that being said, i'm not for obvious tanking, but this situation really didn't seem like it to me which is why I didn't even tell him privately it was a bad idea. I thought nothing of it when he mentioned it.

                    The main reasons are this..

                    1. Stanfield has been injured, and the game is screwy with injuries.
                    2. Stanfield is in his walk year, and Jester has been trying to prepare himself for the time for awhile now, hence the reason he drafted Ike, then traded for Rockwell.
                    3. He has been very good at managing his cap, so he has the ability to franchise Stanfield for less than he's making now if he wanted to next year.
                    4. Rockwell hasn't exactly been a chump for them. His numbers have been better than Stanfield's this season in limited time.

I just seen nothing wrong with giving Rockwell more of a look because of that, especially considering Stanfield was in his walk year. That's a big financial decision to make for him, so I think it'd be better if he had a little data before making a gamble like that.

Now, if Rockwell was horrible and lost, but he kept playing him anyway, i'd probably mention it to him. I don't see giving it a week by week test just to see what the other guy can bring.

I think the biggest issue is just the stigma of the QB position. People seem to feel teams should ride a certain QB to the ground regardless of performance. Look at Pittsburgh.. they have a solid shot at making the playoffs, and their RB is in a walk year, and the backup is producing more than Rodrigez. Would there be any mention if MrBiggs decided to try out Richardson as his starter down the stretch? I wouldn't care if he did it.

This league is full of honest GM's, I don't really feel it's right to call out one of them in public unless it's an obvious cheating / game abusing situation though. Even then, it should probably have been taken to Jeff and Suicane. This is the type of stuff that can tear a league apart, and that would suck.

                    • Im pretty much a live and let live kind of dude. I got no problem with anyone doing something they think is best for their team. If it gets into a situation where someone is trying to tank games then we would have to step in of course but I don't think this is one of those situations, and furthermore I don't think this league has the guys where that sort of situation would come up very often if at all.

                        • About tanking: I've never understood why a team doesn't get penalized for a bad record in video games. IMO IRL it's not worth tanking even if a coach was guaranteed a contract the next season since 1 player in a draft is not going to make up for a team of disgruntled mofo's. Seeing as how FOF has an "attitude" rating it would be real easy to have the worst team get very negatively affected, 2nd-worst less but still affected, and so on for the bottom 4 or 5 teams.

I don't think anybody had a problem with him in general sitting his QB, I think the problem came where his motivation was to get a lower contract for next year. My rationalization is that that situation is not realistic and is taking advantage of a failing of the game (ie, in real life if Manning sat out the last four games of the season to rest him for the playoffs, his contract demands would not go down, they might even go up).

My opinion is that dberner's comments were appropriate. He didn't rip jester, just gave his opinion and asked the league to discuss something. I think that's a better outcome than having everything done in secret. Jester has thick enough skin where something like that won't hurt him.

I'm learning in FOF2k7, you better have good financials because otherwise your owner is going to be strict on how much you pay your staff.

In IHOF where I have been struggling for the past few years, the fans have been few and far between. The result? Bad financials. The result, I was able to offer a max salary of $490,000 to my lead scout. I was unable to go over $2.75 mil for my DC.
