I can't really gauge what my rookies did but they all look awesome save for CB Tosheff, and the OG. ... it'll be a wait-and-see on those two.
While the offense got some nice upgrades, I'm giddy about what this defense looks capable of.
The pass rushers look as expected them and I'm glad I left O'Bryan at Bandit as DE Lake looks to still have some 'juice'. These two make for some respectable bookends on a much improved defensive-line. 5T Archie Knowlton is a key pickup -- used just like the ends in the Legion-of-Boom Defense. Witches Lowe and Sangria are a duo to watch! I've never had a WLB with a 100 pass rush rating so I'll be watching closely (he dropped to 88 rush technique in camp)
Some digging in Late FA sniffed out a pair of system corners in Cover, Andrew Schultz and Two, Dustin Lavallee. I've got them playing with the 2's all preseason to see how they do in the scheme.
On offense, nothing spectacular happened but the strong offensive line retained all it's talent, including future legend of the game KC Hughes. Here comes the giddy-up
Woots:
TE Rex Rodgers: mission accomplished
DE Thomas O'Bryan : Prototypical Bandit; best pure rusher in the draft?
OLB Richie Sangria: Ignore that BS overall rating. This guy is the truth!!!
Time to get some preseason booty!!!

Offensive system designed for a scrambling touch & long range passer that fuses a power running game with multiple receiver looks on early downs to maximize 3rd down efficacy.
Features:
Triangle rushing:
Running plays are executed out of forms that include a FB/TE in the package and often off tackle / guard. This effectively gives the running back a triangle of blockers at the point of attack—making it much more likely he’s going to win against the defense.
3WR/4WR/5WR passing/rushing:
most teams can’t cover two good wide receivers – this scheme gets the WR3/WR4/WR5 plenty of looks on reverses and screens.
QB Scrambling:
This is the x-factor of the spread. A dynamic scrambler makes the expanded use of multiple receiver sets a great counter against a team that can stop power running.
Defense
Red Sky
Philosophy: Force pass
Scheme: 34 Hybrid
Summary
This is a flexible press - coverage defense that can defend both the run and pass very effectively from the base 34 and 46 packages on 1st and 2nd downs. Long passing downs are primarily defended from the nickel and dime sub-packages--featuring the team's top pass rusher and cover 3 (Sky) coverage. The primary receiver is double-teamed when the pass is expected but is defended with single press coverage on non-passing downs and the blitz.
Preseason awaits...

First teams have looked efficient; our 2nd and 3rd strings not so much. Here is the run-down:
Week 2
HOU vs SLC
We sat on a bye week 1 but saw action against HOU in Week 2. I went with my Power Spread gameplan but stayed with the recommended settings for playing time. That was disappointing as we looked to be hitting on all cylinders prior to him hitting the bench. QB Packard looked awful but HOU's has some quality depth on defense so I'm not alarmed. Still we hit some big plays and looked competitive.
Highlight:
The Prophet fires his Spear of Righteousness:
Salt Lake City: Five-Receiver Spread formation, strength is left. The defense is in a 43 with nickel personnel and 3-deep zone coverage, expecting the pass. Cowgill is blitzing.
2-10-SLC12 (1Q: 04:43) Gabe Patterson pass completed to WR Irving Spear for 88 yards and a TOUCHDOWN! Spear gained 64 yards after the catch. The quarterback threw away from the double coverage. Salt Lake City 13, Houston 3
Week 3
SLC vs MON
I decided to see what Rex's gameplan for this personnel would be while it moved the ball, I gotta say it's not my cup of tea---too much inside running / medium passing / pro-forms for my taste.
Highlight:
The rookie pass rushers team up for a sack, fumble recovery:
1-10-MTL50 (1Q: 03:33) Dwight Cowgill sacked by OLB Richie Sangria for a loss of 7 yards. Sack allowed by Phillip Irwin. The ball was fumbled and recovered by SLC Pepper O'Bryan for 5 yards to the MTL38.
Week 4
SLC vs STL
First off, I got mad respect for this STL defense--going to get to that in a bit; we were absolutely dominated all game and my defense looked rather PATHETIC. This was the last chance to really gauge how'd we'd look week 1 and I blew the playing time settings (derp). I know I said I was gonna return to the base offense this game BUT I loaded the BELCO RB Focus gameplan instead---funny thing is it looks like STL ran the same offense and executed it ALL DAY LONG :/
It's preseason and I know I shouldn't be that concerned with the outcomes but other gms aren't having problems executing their defenses :-/

With me screwing up the 'dress combat' in Wk4, I played my starters the first half and sure enough, I got hit :/
CB Bucannon (Two) out 18 weeks
will be taking the year off likely as I have 2-3 guys that can go in his stead.
QB Gabe Patterson out 5 weeks
Out 5 weeks w/ a strained elbow tendon, so FA pickup QB Estrada (his 17 forms versus Packard's 12 is the clincher for me) is going to likely make the 53-man roster.
Despite those injuries, preseason ends on a positive note. This week, we go back to our Power Spread attack and Red Sky defense and we finally "get-some" .
Time for the cuts!

Sunshine won't be playing for us at $7M/season, we can get his (40/40) level of play for far less --LB Harvey George turned out to be a cash-grabbing bum!

Me thinking that my injured QB being 'out' meant I didn't need to sign anybody [SMH] landed QB BRADY MEYERS on my roster --- reshuffle and my rookie Witch gets deactivated while my run-stuffing backup LB starts in his place.
Long story short, we don't affect the passer like we need to and VAN jumps out to an early lead--we don't get a chance to establish a ground attack and never look comfortable on offense.
A 51-yard bomb to WR Spear and some forced turnovers late gave us hope but VAN was never really threatened here.
SLC loses 28-27

The Arsenal rolled into town sporting a top-notch WR corps and a very good QB / RB combo. They roll out with a hoof-print on their collectively arses. As Tart used to say:
"You just got run the @#$% over"
I had some concern about my corners being able to match up against Curtis Gray and Bryan Reinhardt but as it turns out, their arsenal was no match for weapon #31 Daryl Wiggins.
"James Tart 2.0" goes 'stallion-mode' for the home crowd and turns in 150 total yards and 4 TDs in his home debut. That was just the first half!
Pass rush was effective with the right guys on the field and we play keep away ball all 2nd half as we coast to a rather easy win.
SLC wins 35-7

QB Estrada does just enough to keep it close, while Wiggins turns in another Tart-like rushing performance, running through the Mountaineers like --- er a stallion
The defense charges in to finish the kill with 3 picks of the QB late in the 4th. It was anybody's ballgame up until then as each team played well defensively. Next up, Madison at home...
