1985 World Series, Game 2, Seattle Mariners At Chicago Cubs
Stieb throws today against Roy Branch. Branch is 20-8 on the year with a 4.13 era. We traded him to the Cubs in 1979 and after 3 straight horrible seasons he put it together and has lowered his ERA each of the past 3 seasons culminating in this career year for him. Let's get em.

Stieb gave up a first inning run.

Sandberg got a huge 2 out, 2 run single in the top of the 3rd to make it 2-1.

Frank White returned the favor with a 2 out, 2 run single in the bottom of the 4th to give them a 3-2 lead.

Keith Hernandez hot a solo bomb in the top of the 5th to tie it at 3.

Larry Sheets doubled in a run in the bottom of the inning to put them back on top 4-3 after 5 innings.

We have runners on 1st and 3rd in the top of the 6th with the pitcher due to hit, we bring in Jim Maler to pinch hit.
He singles in the tyeing run. That's all we get and we bring in Worrell for the bottom of the 6th.

Worrell immediately puts runners on 2nd and 3rd and we bring in Willie Hernandez. Hernandez gets out of it only giving up 1 run and we again trail 5-4 after 6 innings.

Hernandez allowed a run in the 7th and we trail 6-4 after 7 innings.

Cubs add 2 in the 8th, we get 1 of them back but end up falling 8-5 and head back to Seattle down 2 games to 0.

In even more distressing news, Bret Butler strained ligaments in his ankle and is out for the rest of the series.

Vince Coleman will get the call up and replace him in Center Field.

1985 World Series, Game 3, Seattle Mariners vs Chicago Cubs
Game 3 will see Ron Romanick face off against Mike Moore. This is a must win game for us.

They plate one in the top of the 2nd.

We load the bases with 2 out in the 3rd but can't get anything done.

With 2 on and nobody out in the bottom of the 7th, down 1-0, we bring in Jose Baez to hit for Dan Firova with the purpose of laying down a sac bunt, he's able to beat it out and we have the bases loaded with nobody out. Strawberry grounded into a double play to score a run and then Ripken grounded to the pitcher who threw wide of first, allowing the go ahead run to score, wooohooo. We go to the 8th up 2-1.

      Romanick gets thru the 8th.

Hernandez starts the 9th with a lefty up. He gets Sheets to fly out and then Henke comes in and strikes out the next two batters to preserve a 2-1 win in a hyyyuge game. Nice.

1985 World Series, Game 4, Seattle Mariners vs Chicago Cubs
Scott Sanderson will start today on 3 days rest. We need a win from him today. It's likely we'll go with Bruce Robbins in game 5 is Sanderson can get the win today.

They plate a run in the 2nd.

Edler gets a 2 out RBI single in the 4th to tie it at 1-1 after 4 innings.

We load the bases with 1 out in the 5th but can't get anything across.

Vince Coleman singles in Wiggins in the bottom of the 7th to put us up 2-1.

        Sanderson breezed thru the 8th.

1st and 3rd and nobody out and Strawberry reached on a Pat Tabler error allowing a run to score. Roy Smalley then bobbled a Ripken grounder allowing another run to score and make it 4-1. Vince Coleman later legged out an infield single allowing another run to score. Sandberg jacked a 3 run bomb and just like that it's 8-1.

Schiraldi gives up 1 in the 9th but we close it out 8-2 and even the series at 2 games a piece.

1985 World Series, Game 5, Seattle Mariners vs Chicago Cubs
Bruce Robbins will get the start today with Steve Comer ready to go as well. I want to get Stieb and Romanick maximum rest and feel I can win today with Robbins. He'll be facing Doug Drabek.

Dave Winfield who has been quiet this postseason, delivers a 2 out RBI single in the bottom of the 1st.

Vince Coleman gets a mega big 2 out, 2 run double in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Sandberg then singles him home and we lead 4-0 after 2 innings.

Robbins throws 7 dominant innings and we bring in Musselman for the 8th. He sets em down.

Christ. Willie Hernandez gets the first guy in the 9th, then allows a single. We bring in Todd Worrell who promptly walks 2 guys. In comes Henke. He strikes out Buddy Bell then walks Frank White to let in a run and it's 4-1. Ken Singleton strikes out looking and that's the ball game. We head back to Chicago up 3 games to 2. Woohooo, HoooHaaa.

The bad news is that Willie Hernandez has a sprained finger on his pitching hand and will miss the final 2 games of the series. Crap on a cracker.

1985 World Series, Game 6, Seattle Mariners at Chicago Cubs
Dave Stieb throws today against Mike Moore with a chance for us to clinch the World Series. Yay.

Cubs score 1 in the 3rd thanks to three singles.

With 2 outs in the 4th Sandberg tripled and then Hernandez doubled him in to tie it.

Stieb allowed a run in the 4th and left the bases loaded, he's looked shakey the past 2 innings.

At the end of 6 we trail 2-1.

Hernandez doubles to start to the 7th, advances in a Winfield ground out, but a pop up and a strikeout leaves him stranded.

Musselman starts the 7th. He sets em down.

Stoddard pitches the 8th and allows 2 baserunners but doesn't give up a run. We head to the 9th down 2-1.

Hernandez walks with 2 out but Winfield flies out to center to end it as we fall 2-1 and head to game 7.

1985 World Series, Game 7, Seattle Mariners at Chicago Cubs
This one is for all the marbles. Ron Romanick who has thrown 2 gems since getting knocked around in his first game back will be counted on to bring it on home. Danny Jackson starts for the Cubs. Here we go baby!

They load the bases with 1 out in the 2nd. Danny Jackson flies out weakly to right but Romanick walks Dan Rohn to bring in a run. He then walks Smalley to bring in another run and that's it for him
Steve Comer comes in and gets Larry Sheets to ground out and end the inning with them up 2-0.

With 2 outs in the 3rd Jackson walks Coleman and Sandberg, Hernandez proceeds to smash a 3 run shot over the left field wall to make it 3-2.

Bob Stoddard starts the 3rd and sets em down.

With runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out in the top of the 4th we hit for Stoddard with Jose Baez. Baez grounds weakly to 3rd, failing to score a run. Wiggins then walks. Coleman grounds out to end the inning.

Scott Sanderson starts the 4th. He allows a 2 out RBI single to Dan Rohn to tie the game at 3 after 4 innings.

Sandberg leads off the 5th with a solo shot to put us back on top, wooohooo.

Sanderson sets down the meat of their order in order in the 5th.

After back to back singles to start the 6th we fail to score a run and lead 4-3 heading to the bottom of the inning.

Ron Musselman starts the 6th and sets em down.

We go down in the 7th.

Musselman sets em down in the 7th.

We go down in the 8th.

Calvin Schiraldi starts the bottom of the 8th with Worrell and Henke ready. He walks Bell with 1 out. Bell is then bunted to 2nd and in comes Henke. Mike Martin singles in the game tyeing run He then walks Scot Thompson and Dan Rohn, oh crap.
We leave him in there to face Roy Smalley with the bases juiced and he allows a 2 run single. SON OF A BITCH.
Larry Sheets flies out but we go to the top of the 9th down 6-4.

Wiggins and Coleman ground out and Sandberg strikes out to the end the game giving the Cubs the win and the world series.

How maddening to be so close.

Well, on to 1986 and the hopes of a pennant repeat and more. How frustrating.

1986 Arbitration Cases & Expiring Contracts
1B Jim Maler wants a $500,000 raise. He had some good years for us but he's a bench player now and even though i can probably offer him less and win arbitration, i'd still rather go with younger, cheaper players. We release him.

3B Dave Edler wants $460,000, a $400,000 pay raise. We want to keep him around for 1 more year as i'm not sure Presley will be ready to take over 3B yet. We offer $330,000 and win the case.

RP Joe Edeln only wants a mild $40,000 raise, we give it to him.

Crikey. RP Ron Musselman wants $900,000, an almost $600,000 raise. Man, I hate paying relievers that much, especially middle relievers. Damnit. We sign him to a 3 year deal worth $900,000.

We're about a million dollars over budget but thanks to last season we have a history high $2.4M in the caufers.

We feel like we have everything we need in our own system so we don't peruse any Free Agents.

                    • 1986 Players In The Last Years Of Their Contracts

RF Dave Winfield is an immense decision. He's still rated high and producing like a top tier slugger but we have Strawberry coming up who will be without a spot if we keep Winfield. The known is better than the unknown though and we extend Dave for 2 additional seasons at only a $100,000 raise.

SP Scott Sanderson has been steady and solid for us and wants a 3 year extension at just a $100,000 raise. We give it to him.

3B Dave Edler and LF Alan Wiggins are both solid contributors for us, but they have young guys coming up who will likely take their jobs either this year or next so there is no need to resign them.

RP Bob Stoddard wants a $260,000 per year raise to extend for 2 more seasons. We give it to him.

2B Jose Baez is a real solid bench guy and middle infielder, he wants a $270,000 per year raise to extend for 2 more years. We bring him down a tad and resign him.

SP Steve Comer has posted 13, 14, and 15 win seasons for us but he's 32 with slipping ratings and not a front line starter so we decide not to give the $300,000 raise he wants. We'll wait this one out.

RP Joe Edelen, CF Glen Burke and RF Dave Kingman are all likely in their last seasons with us so we wont be extending them.

                      • 1986 Spring Training Notes
A little dissapointed in the progression of guys like Presley & Strawberry, they arn't projecting out to be the monsters I had hoped. Solid players but not monsters. Still it's likely that they'll be on the big league club this season and see a fair share of playing time. Daulton will start the year in AAA as I think he can grow some more.

A bit of a new look to our lineup this will feature Coleman in LF, he deserves to start and will do so against Righties. Coleman will hit 9th however and Sandberg will bat out of the 2 hole. Wiggins will also hit 9th when he starts against lefties. Presley will play 3B against lefties as we try to get him a good share of AB's. Our bench is hella deep.

Ron Musselman took a ratings hit, not pleased with that. We also have too many starters, Comer will likely move to middle relief.

I hiked all of our expenses. We're now spending a combined $6 Million on the farm system, scouting and medical. Our payroll as a result is nearly $7 Million over budget but i think we might ok. We'll see.

                        Welp, onto the season.

                          • 1986 MLB Season
On May 1st we're 17-11, 1.5 games out of 1st and tied for 3rd in a hella good AL West.

Jesus H Christmas Tree. On May 22 we find outthat Greg Walker, hitting .294 with 12 HR's has broken his wrist and is done for the year. Strawberry will DH against Righties with Coleman moving into the 2 hole to extend our lineup.
Wiggins become DH against lefties with Coleman moving to Left Field and hitting 2nd. This is not what i wanted.
Scott Sanderson has an ERA over 6, so does Atlee Hammaker. That shit needs to come down.

On June 3rd, the day of the amateur draft, we're 34-23 but 7.5 games behind the White Sox. I'm worried.
Steve Comer becomes my 5th starter. Atlee Hammaker is demoted to AAA and Calvin Schiraldi comes up to pitch relief.

                            Amateur Draft Time!!
Round 1: SP Pat Hentgen 50/92
Round 2: SP Denny Neagle 48/88
                            Round 3: 3B Dean Palmer 50/78
Round 4: RP Rick White 46/83
Round 5: RP Rod Beck 50/75
Round 6: CF Alex Diaz 50/63

On July 3rd we've climbed to 48-35 and just 2.5 games out. I want to add that 1 piece to the puzzle but i'm not sure what it is. Musselman and Stoddard are having bad years in the pen and Sanderson, Romanick and Comer arn't lighting it up in the rotation.

We make a deal sending Pitchers Rick White, Jim Abbott, Bob Scanlan, Mike Campbell & CF Glenn Burke to Oakland in exchange for Starter/Relieve Mike Morgan. Morgan is 26, rated 87 and making $540K thru 1988. His ERA this year is 3.30 and he's been consistently good for 4 years now. We'll put him in Middle Relief right now with an eye on the rotation if anyone needs replacing. We may make more deals as the deadline approaches.

On July 10th we've won 5 in a row and lead the division by a game.

On July 26th we're 60-38 and 2.5 games ahead of Chicago. Dave Kingman decided he didn't like AAA has retired.
Our pitching has really settled in and won't be making any moves. We've lost $1.2M already this year but still have over a million in the caufers.

BLARNEY IN THE BUTTHOLE! August 3rd, 67-38, 7.5 games up in the AL West and RP Todd Worrell ruptures a cervical disc. I didn't even know dudes had cervixes. Fuck all. Bob Stoddard gets called back up to replace him in the pen and now Schiraldi and Morgan are our short relievers.

September 5th and we're 91-44, 10 games up in the West and on our way to a 2nd straight division title.

Ughhh. September 16th and 3B Dave Edler stretches a knee ligamint and will miss a month. We sign journeyman LF Steve Kemp to a 1 year deal to sit on our bench. I'd prefer to have Kingman.

We finish the season 106-56 and will face the 105-57 Baltimore Orioles in the ALCS.

                            • Regular Season Reflection And Post Season Projection
We had a weird season in that nobody had mega numbers but we all played very well, it really was 25 guys being above average and a total team effort. Brett Butler did lead the majors with 214 hits. The problem with that is that as he head to two short series we need dominant pitchers. Right now only Dave Stieb is someone I trust as an ace. Sanderson has rebounded and will be in our post season rotation but i'm worried about him. Romanick did not have a good year and i'll have a tough time deciding if he's worthy if we need a 4th starter. As it stands we will trot out Stieb, Sanderson and Robbins in the first 3 games of the ALCS. I'm happy with our bullpen and ready to go to war with it, same holds true of our offense.

Financialy we lost $2.8 Million this year to put us $430,000 in the red but we should make that money up in the postseason. Our payroll and expenses have just gotten too high and looking ahead to next year, i'm not sure we can really increase it that much so that should be interesting.

Well, heres a look at our numbers and the Orioles numbers on the season.

                              • 1986, ALCS Game 1, Seattle Mariners vs Baltimore Orioles
We have Stieb going against Dennis Martinez today, gotta get off on the right foot here.

A solo HR by Dan Firova puts us up 1-0 in the top of the 2nd.

Back to back 2 out doubles from them tie it in the top of the 3rd.

A line shot the just inches over the left field fence from Brett Butler gets us the lead back in the bottom of the 3rd.

Strawberry goes deep in the 4th to make it 3-1.

Stieb, sitting on 105 pitches, allows a 2 run, 2 out bomb to Rufino Linares in the top of the 7th to tie it.

Dave Winfield gets it right back with a BOMB in the bottom of the 7th.

Willie Hernandez sets em down in the 8th.

Keith Hernandez jacks a 2 run shot in the bottom of the 8th to give us a 6-3 lead.

Henke sets em down in the 9th and we finish game one off with a 6-3 win. Nice.
