As we head into the offseason I need to make some decisions. Our payroll is too high and we're down to $1 Million in cash. We only lost $1.2 Million last season so the projections were off, likely due to our winning season. I'm afraid if we don't do as well we'll lose attendance and dip into the black, which would be horrible.
It's not something I like to do but I decide to send RF Rob Deer, RF Reggie Walton, P Frank MacCormack and RF Casey Parsons to Philadelphia for $600K. None of those guys had a future on the big league squad and the money should help us get thru the season. Our budget is still only $3.2M while our actual payroll is $5.1M, but now we have $1.6M in cash. As long as we don't spend we should be ok.
We do absolutely nothing in free agency, content to return last years team.
Spring Training shows us some dissapointing signs from a couple of veterans. Larry Bowa and Leroy Stanton have dropped off ratings wise. Stantons hold on the LF job is strenuous at best but we just don't have anyone else. Craig Reynolds may get a chance to reclaim the SS job, he played great for us in 77 but last year Bowa brought a spark that I really feel helped us get as many wins as we did, it'll be intriguing for sure. Sandberg and Ripken are right on schedule I can only hope they get here while Hernandez and Winfield are still in the meat of things, 2 years maybe?
On the pitching front, Doc Medich and Dick Ruthven really stabilized us last year, we need Krukow to step up though. Rawley and Black will never be studs but with another year at AAA i'm hoping they can be solid additions to the starting staff next year. Our bullpen was solid enough, Romo returns after a brilliant season and I can only hope that it wasn't a flash in the pan. Stoddard and Brown need to repeat their performances as well. There isn't much bullpen help down in the minors so this band aid needs to stay on for awhile.
Oh yeah, I also convinced my owner to buy into a little corporation here in the city called Microsoft, I got a small stake as well and a nice amount of stock, I hope it pays off!!I luv British womenz.

On May 6th we stand at 16-17, our .313 team batting average is 2nd in the AL, but our team ERA is 5.40
On June 1st we're 31-25, 2 games back of Kansas City. If we're still here in a month I might have to consider going out and getting some help. Doc Medich and Roy Branch, our 4 and 5 starters are really struggling, i'm tempted to bring up Rawley and Bud Black but i'll give the guys another month.
Rupert Jones contract is up this year and he's an interesting case, his ratings vs Righties are pretty damn good and he seems to be improving, he wants a bump up to $300K from $30K, we'll keep an eye on him, he's only 24 and we arn't loaded with outfielders down in the minors.
June 5th, we're 32-28 and 1.5 games back.
Amateur Draft Time! Christopher Almighty we have the 13th pick? That's what winning will do.
Round 1: 3B Jim Presely 50/94
Round 2: SP Tim Belcher 52/85
Round 3: LF Vince Coleman 50/78
Round 4: CF Herm Winningham 49/77
Round 5: LF Henry Cotto 50/65
July 1st and we're 42-41, 2 games back of KC in a bunch with 6 teams seperated by 5.5 games. Hmmm. A stud pitcher could really put us over the top here.
We pull the trigger on a bit of a big deal. 30 year old Jerry Reuss comes to us from Pittsburgh rated a 90 and with a 4.05 era so far this year. In exchange we send Doc Medich, Bud Black who has become a clear #2 behind Rawley as far as our pitching prospects go, and 3B Jamie Allen rated 69/84. We barely raise our salary in this deal and get a whole lot better. Rawley will be promoted to be the #5 starter and our starting staff suddenly is alot stronger.
Later in the day we add another piece as we get RP Willie Hernandez from the Chicago Cubs, he's 24 years old and rated 83/86. In exchange we give up the recently demoted Roy Branch and minor leaguer Andy Hawkins. Hernadez will move into a role as our setup man.
I'm not saying these deals will put us over the top, but both of them are real solid for both this year and the years ahead.
A 5 game losing streak at the end of July puts us at 54-51 and 3.5 games back on August 1st, but there was a day in July when we were tied for 1st.
On September 2nd we are 70-64 and 1.5 games out of 1st, oh man.
Alas, it is not to be. We finish the year 82-80, 9 games out of 1st place and in 4th in the AL West.I luv British womenz.

RP Jim Kern, RP Mike Willis both sign with us. Catchers Ernie Witt and Duffy Dyer join our group as well.
We sign a myriad of players to extensions, Charlie Beamon, Willie Hernadez, Rupert Jones, Enrique Romo and Jerry Ruess all got multi year deals. Mike Krukow and Dick Ruthven were looking for money outside of what I think they're worth, as is Craig Reynolds. Larry Bowa is in his last year as well, we'll wait until the offseason for him though, he may end up retireing.
Spring Training brought some good signs. Sandberg and Ripken continue to progress, Andujar after a slight setback last season has seen his ratings increase, hopefully at 27 he can become a bonafide year to year ace. Our starting staff is 5 strong and our bullpen is improved. Our offense should excell once more but i'm worried about our bench, our backup outfielders suck big old turtle balls.
Our payroll is $7.3M and our budget is only $4.4M. We have $1.3M in the till but as usual we have to hope for attendance above projection or else we'll be cutting it awfully close.

On May 1st we're 15-15, 5.5 games behind in a division so crowded we're in last place. Shane Rawley has been very impressive, our entire stage except for Krukow and Kern have been. It's our hitting that's dragging right now as only Craig Reynolds at .341 is hitting over .300. Winfield does have a .295 avg and 8 HR's though. We lost $205K in the first month, gotta be carefull here.
On June 1st we're 24-33 and 12 games out, not where i want to be. Our pitching staff came back down to earth and our hitting hasn't exactly gone nuts. Larry Milbourne has really struggles in the 2 hole so we move Rupert Jones up into it in the hopes of sparking the top of the lineup.
The Amateur Draft is here.
Round 1: C Darren Daulton 59/89
Round 2: RF Daryl Strawberry 58/85
Round 3: RP Calvin Schiraldi 50/83
Round 4: LF Bo Jackson 51/75
Round 5: SP Greg Matthews 48/76
Round 6: 1B Jim Lindeman 49/62
On July 1st we're 35-49, 23.5 games out and effing wretched. The bottom half of our order sucks balls, the pitching has been quietly underwhelming, high 4, low 5 eras all around. Ehhh. We're almost $1 Million in the black so far this season and will likely end the year in debt, we have to do something
Jim Kern has sucked for us so we put him and youngster Bryan Clark on the trade block and get an offer from Texas of 26 year old starter Steve Cormier in return. Cormier is only making $2,600 this year so that will save us some major change. We get them to throw in an additional $150,000 to help us out.
On July 16th Shane Rawley breaks his fibia, YAY. Youngster Danny Cox will take his place in the rotation.
On August 20th we're 50-70, 28.5 games out of first. We only have $205,000 left.
We finish the season a hugely dissapointing 71-91, 10 games of our pace of the previous 2 seasons. We have $90,000 so we stayed above water for this year, but there will be very little in the way of new additions next season.I luv British womenz.

Larry Bowa comes to us with an offer of $45,000 a year for 2 years. He was previously making $375,000. Bowa is really our heart and soul even if his best days are behind him, we accept the deal.
Craig Reynolds is a huge decision for us to make. He's had back to back supberb seasons but we have major offense coming up thru the minors. He wants a raise of nearly $300,000 a year and we decide we just can't do it and let him walk.
We let OF Steve Stroughter & 2B Bill Stein walk.
Mike Krukow won arbitration and got a $100,000 pay raise for a 5.5 era last year. I hope a porcupine rapes his pee hole.
Dick Ruthven is willing to take a $10,000 pay cut for a 4 year contract but he's gone further down each year he's been here. Still, he is a starting pitcher with good ratings. I work out a deal where he gets a slight pay raise for only a 2 year deal. Prove it or be gone mister!
Eff it. We decide to try and dump some salary and put Ruthven on the block. Texas offers us 22 year old closer Tom Henke in return and we jump on the deal.
We win arbitration with RP Bob Stoddard but he still got a real nice pay raise.
So all in all, before we look at our expiring contracts or go after free agents we're $500,000 over budget, it's going to be a bit of a bare bones season but i'm not looking to move anyone yet.
We take the money saved and sign LF Dan Thomas, a solid enough hitter, to a 2 year deal at $300,000 per. And RF Dave Kingman joins us for 2 years at $250,000 per.
Lets take a look at our expiring contracts and guys who'll be up for arbitration next year.
Jerry Reuss signs a 1 year extension at the same salary, nice.
Buddy Bell extends another year for about an $50,000 pay raise.
Mike Krukow extends for 2 more years at a $100,000 pay cut, he likes Seattle.
RP Bob Stoddard signs a 2 year extension at $5000 less, nice deal.
C Ernie Whitt who sucked donkey cockels last year wants a pay raise to extend his contract, he can lick my butthole.
C Duffy Dyer is willing to take a $15,000 pay cut to extend for a year, good enough for me.
RP Tom Henke wants a significant pay raise to sign a long term deal, I have a feeling he's gonna be worth it so I sign him to a 5 year deal worth $330K per.
SP Peter Roberts who has sucked in the last bullpen spot is put on the block along with Greg Eradi. Milwaukee offers us RP Ricky Keaton in return. Keaton is 24 and ranked 80/82, we do the deal.
RP Mike Willis will not get an extension from us, we have young bullpen arms coming along and even though he wants a slight raise he just isn't worth it right now. This will be his last year in Seattle.
Besides Witt the only player in the last year of his deal is LF Charlie Beamon, he's played well for us, has good ratings and is coming into his prime at only 27 years old, but he wants a $300,000 pay raise and I honestly think we have more than enough offense. It'll be tough to watch him go but this is likely his last year in Seattle.
It's very clear in spring training that Ryan Sandberg is ready to be our everyday 2nd basemen. With that in mind we ship Larry Milbourne off to Baltimore for $200,000.I luv British womenz.
