I don't think you can reneg the contract down to half-way. Once they have been paid they want to continue to remain payed. I know because I tried this with cb sims, kerr and lb burns. Maybe I didn't try hard enough to find the exploit, I don't know.

I seem to remember a torress signing a outragous 84.57 mil contract then the very next year renegging down to 41.02 mil.

I didnt want to vote for the proposal 'as stated', because I think it also punished people who wanted to be creative with players they themselves drafted, as opposed to just stopping this abuse. I WOULD vote for an amended version that stopped the renegotiating of aquired FAs until the final year, but allowed you to renegotiate with players that you yourself had previously drafted. This would reward good draft/team management, AND stop the abused 'Offer a 20 MIL bonus and then reneg' bug.

On the FLIP side, those bonuses DO have to be accounted for, and WILL catch up to you over time. I am so pressed against the cap that I couldnt take advantage of this loophole if i tried...

I'd have to think about it, but what about some type of rule that states you cannot re-sign players you signed / re-signed for at least a full season, maybe two? This obviously wouldn't count towards players with 1-2 year contracts, but may help with the mega contracts.

I never really felt good with the 'last year' rule because if I sign someone to a 5 year deal, and on year 4 he's willing to sign a 3 year extension, I don't think I should have to wait until the next season to sign that.

There is a line between obvious exploits and trying to run a team. The 'exploit' becomes obvious when someone signs a HUGE deal and then the very next off-season cuts the deal in half.

Then again, that leads to two issues.

1) More backloading after the 2nd season
2) Who is going to police all that anyway?

The policing is the biggest issue for me. I think our commishes have enough to do without going through all these. But I would be in favor of a rule that does not allow $14,000,000 offers in the 6th year of a contract when the first five are hovering at only $2,000,000.

The reason I don't even think of new rules anymore is simply because the commish's have stated a desire to not regulate house rules. Everything thought up must be enforced.

Yes Torres signed an outrageous - utterly ridiculous contract. He is arguably one of the the best DT's in the league. Others were in the bidding for nearly that price.

The essence of the contract is guaranteed money. Same in the NFL. So by saying he took a 40 million dollar paycut is completely missing the point. He actually got a raise, in guaranteed money. The piper has to be paid in that contract at an even higher rate. So at the end of Torres' usefulness when I want to discard him it is going to hurt. When you cut a player you pay the bonus over the life of the contract all at once.

Tons of real players do this to help out teams and get another big bonus all at once. They drop their salary but take more bonus thus making the contract look smaller, but the guaranteed money is more.

But, I don't need to tell you guys this. We all know that.

Better to come across a crack smoker than your average jackass, which is the reason you get attacked, not because of your proposed rules - which just get voted down.
