  • Renamed: The Ultimate IFL DB thread

This deal with Ochs has got me thinking. . I wish I had an easy way of going back to previous seasons and players that might not have been on my team in the past, or players that I cut/traded to see how they are doing.

This line of thoguht brought me back to the "Ultimate" IFL database, which I ahve been tossing around since the beginning of the league. Due to time constraints, and my impending deployment, I may not be abnle to finish it for another 6 months. I could work on it whil edeployed, but I wouldn't be able to get it "online" until after I came back.

Some of the things that I am considering are including stats and player ratings.

For player ratings I end up coming back to three big questions that I would like feedback on.

    1. How do I extract the data and still be consistent? If I use my scout for everything, the data might be off for players not on my team, and those positions that my scout isn't so good at. Would this be an acceptable variance?

    2. How often do I enter a data capture? I was thinking about the following: Begin season/Draft Preview, Post Draft, After TC, After Pre season, week 6, Week 12, After Bowl Game. & numbers per year.

    3. Are names ever repeated? Will their be another player called James Tart in five years? Or are all the player names unique?

    And now for the stats:

    1. Is it worthwhile to track every game? Or should I only track season stats with team splits. For instance a player that plays 4 games for one team and 12 for another in a single season? How useful is it to go back 3 years to a specific game to see a stat breakdown? Of course, if I do a game-by-game stats, I could then track obscure records like a QB rating when the temp is below freezing.

    2. Should I put a limit on the number of players that I track? 32x53=1696 players for one year. After 4 years, the number of players that have played in a game could easily reach 2500. Besides kickers, coudl I limit to it to players who have started at least one game without a significant impact to the DB?

    3. And jsut for the hell of it, what kind of obscrue stats/records would you all like to see?

uh, wow. That would be a hell of an undertaking. Your scout's perception would be an acceptable variance. You could use FOF Scrape to get all the players in the data base. However, I'm not sure how the program works as I can never get it to work right.

you could maybe start each player at the scout's perception @ draft preview time, then grow it from there.

    Sounds kinda cool, though

The latest version of FOF Extractor will pull all players as well . .havn't tried it yet because I think it take about 2 weeks considering it takes an hour to just get the draft pool. Is Scrape faster? and does it include a breakdown from the player card?

I just used extractor on my team. . first non draft I've done it on. . .it is cool that it extracts salary/bonus splits. . .but do you think that current anf future overall rating would be useful? It doesn't get that.

Is there a formula to combine detailed ratings into an overall rating?

Honestly, I wouldn't really care to see ratings in a database like you're describing. What I really like about IHOF's is the ability to track past transactions and see playoff stats. There's also an awards section.

I'm sure you've checked out the site before, but here's a link in case you haven't.

Edit: Duh, forgot about injuries. That'd probably be the coolest thing of all, especially during free agency when you're spending big bucks on guys you haven't been tracking that closely.

Do they hand punch that or is it extracted from somewhere?

That is an awsome layout. . and transactiosn is something I want to put in. . havvn't thought about injuries, but it wouldn't be too hard to add. Setting up the table is pretty easy. . collecting the data would be time consuming.

The big question is, does anyone have every stage there is?

Doubtful. I've got a lot from 2003, but not everything. And this is something where we'd need everything, so we'd almost have to start fresh for things like injuries.

Do you have 2004 and 2005? I don't really need the FA stages between games since they will be considered the week of the game. . what I mean is the FA stage before Week 2, will just be labeled week 2.

The game logs for 2003 are here, so I can use them. We can go through teh game logs to determine when a player was injured. . wemay miss a couple 1-3 week injuries. . but most of them should be there.

Jeff, if you send me what you have, hopefully they are labeled, I can then find out what I am missing, and ask if anyone has it. Once I get everything available, I can move the data for 2003-2005 to CD to ensure I don't lose it.

BTW, I don't really care about preseason stats. If I include injuries I will parse the preseason games for injuries, but I won't track them in the DB unless there is a large outcry from the other owners.

I should also ask if anyone is interested in doing the front end for this thing. . I have dabbled in JAVA, HTML, and ASPs over the years. . but DBs, C++, COBOL, and Sys Admin are my specialty.

I could probly do a JAVA front end, since it is close to C++, but even my skills in C++ are degrading from lack of use, it would problay take forever.

Plus I have never been very good at "presentation" I can organize it, but it never looks quite right. I have absolutly no artistic talent when it comes to color schemes and "design". I can do fucntional, but not pretty.
