The Elite Teams
Boston/Lawrence 19/33 (2036) 6 (2023) 4 (2023)
There's only one franchise that can say they have a ring on every finger and are looking for one for the thumb. Here's the problem. They've been looking for a thumb ring for the past 13 years. In fact, ever since they moved to Boston to become the Marauders and then the Freeze, they've struggled, despite making the playoffs last year. Most of Boston's success came early under GM JesterBlaze as the Lawrence Phantoms.
Newark 24/33 (2036) 7 (2035) 3 (2033)
Matt is one of the last of the original IFL general managers. The Bulldogs boast the highest playoff appearance percentage, missing the playoffs only 9 years over a 33 year span. They have the most IFL appearances with 7. Consistency has always been Matt's forte. He doesn't ever seem to have rebuilding years, and I don't think I've ever seen him have a fire sale. In addition, I'm not sure he's ever had a first round
pick in the top 5? Our researchers will get on that.
Iowa City 17/33 (2036) 5 (2036) 3 (2035)
Rounding out the "elite" teams is Iowa City. Iowa City has been pretty consistent both as the Snipe Hunters and the Arsenal. They just won their 3rd championship the year before last, and almost made it as back to back IFL Champions.
Tier 2
West Virginia 23/33 (2036) 6 (2033) 2 (2015)
Many might want to put West Virginia in that elite category, and there's pretty good evidence to put them there. The problem is, although they've made it to the dance 6 times, they've only won twice. In order to be elite they need to have a better winning percentage in the big dance, especially when their last IFL Championship was 18 years ago. That being said, they've only missed the playoffs 10 times over a 33 year span, and were back in the Imperial bowl 3 years ago despite losing it.
Cleveland 20/33 (2035) 5 (2026) 2 (2026)
Cleveland is not far behind West Virginia with one less Imperial Bowl appearance--that was 10 years ago, but they won it.. Pretty consistent though throughout the years missing 13 playoffs.
Norfolk 18/33 (2036) 4 (2011) 2 (2008)
Norfolk has made the most of their opportunities winning 2 out of 4 of their appearances, but its been 25 years since they've been back to the Imperial Bowl. They are pretty consistent in making it to the playoffs.
Tulsa 13/33 (2036) 3 (2036) 2 (2036)
Our Imperial Bowl Champions won their 2nd Championship is 3 tries. They seem to be on the upswing, so they could make the jump to elite with another win soon. Gone are the days of the Tigerhawks though, lets see what the Worms can do.
Orlando 12/33 (2035) 2 (2028) 2 (2028)
Orlando has won every Imperial Bowl game they've appeared in, and have had consistent management up until now. Its been 8 years since their last championship and now ownerless.
The Pack
Anchorage 20/33 (2034) 3 (2034) 1 (2029)
Anchorage begins the group of teams that have won one Imperial Bowl. They've made it 3 times though and have made it to the playoffs 20 times in 33 years. That's pretty good consistency. They've won recently (2029) and made an appearance in 2034. The Lynx look like they might make the jump soon.
Vancouver 12/33 (2033) 3 (2031) 1 (2021)
Vancouver is in the same boat as Anchorage, only they haven't been as recent a winner. Its been 15 years since their last Championship, and make the playoffs about 50% of the time.
Portland 20/33 (2035) 2 (2019) 1 (2019)
Portland seems to always make the playoffs, but making it to the big game has been tough. Maybe they should go back to Red and Black, because the silver and blue is giving them Dallas Cowboy type luck. They just keep talking about the good old days in Portland, but they keep getting excited every year thinking they might be back.
Little Rock 13/33 (2035) 2 (2007) 1 (2007)
When talking about the good old days, the Lancers haven't been to the dance in almost 30 years. Probably since the days of Coder and the Toads. Fans want to bring back the brown and gold. The Thunder made the playoffs, but that's about it. We will look to see what the revamped Lancers can do.
London 12/33 (2032) 2 (2027) 1 (2025)
London/Baltimore/Where the heck did they originate? They've had more recent success than Little Rock, so they could probably be put ahead of them, they've just made the playoffs less often...by only one year. Oh yeah...Wichita...the Cowboys...meh...Still they got the job done in 2025.
Texas 12/33 (2036) 2 (2014) 1 (2012)
The Trojans and Little Rock are pretty close. I think Texas was originally called the Ghostriders (lime green and black). But I think they had changed to the Trojans before they won their first Imperial Bowl a little over 20 years ago. They make the playoffs semi-consistently, but making it to the big game has been difficult of late.
Madison 11/33 (2031) 2 (2008) 1 (2004)
Boss is in the same predicament. It's been a long time since they rocked and rolled. They're the Kansas City Chiefs of the IFL. They won Imperial Bowl II, and made an appearance in VI, but since then its been tough sledding. Time to bring back that Quarterback...what was his name? Oh yeah..Will Irby. He was great!
One and Done's: AKA The One Hit Wonders.
Salt Lake City 16/33 (2035) 1 (2030) 1 (2030)
I was surprised to see that Vito had only made the Imperial Bowl once. He always seemed to be in the mix, but it appears Newark and Lawrence were always there to keep him from the dance. The Stallions finally broke through 6 years ago and won their first Championship. But now the team is ownerless and that usually spells disaster for a franchise.
Pennsylvania 14/33 (2036) 1 (2017) 1 (2017)
Luis has been around for awhile, and its been awhile since the Lions have won anything. 29 years to be exact. Still PA, tends to make the playoffs on a regular basis but hasn't progressed forward. Still fans chant, "Trust the Process"
St. Louis 14/33 (2034) 1 (2005) 1 (2005)
Hooper took over for one of the most beloved members of the league, Suicane, known mostly for his self-deprecating humor. Unfortunately its been since St. Louis was the Cardinals that they've won a championship--31 years ago. St. Louis keeps making appearances, but they look a little like the Jets or the Chargers.
Columbia 6/33 (2036) 1 (2034) 1 (2034)
The Iceman moved the Fire from Chicago where they were the Knights before they were they were the Boston Dragons. It took them awhile, but they finally won their first Championship 2 years ago. That being said, they've only made the playoffs 6 times in 33 years, and Iceman always has players for sale, and more than once I saw, "Fire" sale. Kudos to Iceman for paying tribute to SovStar and the original Columbia Fire.
Hartford 6/33 (2029) 1 (2009) 1 (2009)
Bring back the Grizzlies, the fans seem to say. They too have only made the playoffs 6 times, and the last time was 7 years ago. Its been 27 years since their last championship. The Whalers are under new young ownership. Let's see if they can make the turnaround.
Vermont 4/33 (2018) 1 (2010) 1 (2010)
And then there's Vermont. They may not be the worst franchise in IFL history, but you can see it from there. Whether they were the Burlington Bolts, the Vermont Mountaineers, or now the Owls, they've only made the playoffs 4 years out of 33--that's a pretty bad percentage. But THIS to their credit. They won the Imperial Bowl 26 years ago. New ownership has been trying to turn things around, but Vermont has the dubious distinction as holding the longest playoff drought in 18 years. 18 YEARS since they've even made the playoffs. PLAYOFFS???
Tasted But Nothing to Show for It.
Calgary 11/33 (2036) 2 (2032) 0
Calgary has had a stormy past. They were the Oakland Raiders under Jave...then the Owls under SovStar, then back to the Raiders. Then they moved northward to Calgary and became the Chinnook...I'm still not sure what a Chinnook is, but they were pretty in their light blue and black. And then they became the Stampede, which is finally when they became relevant again. Calgary has been the bottom feeder of the NC West, but that might change in the new IFL climate. Still, after two appearances, they are yet waiting for their first ring.
Murfreesboro 18/33 (2036) 1 (2013) 0
Murfreesboro is always the Bridesmaid, never the bride. 18 times they've been to the playoffs, but they've only made it to the Bowl game once. And have nothing to show for it. That "He-Haw" Mule on their helmet seems to mock their franchise. And still they had a moniker, "Kicking 'ass' since 2003." Well maybe its the other way around. They are now rudderless and it doesn't seem to be getting better any time soon. It's been 20 years since their last appearance in the Imperial Bowl, with NO wins.
Georgia 14/33 (2030) 1 (2027) 0
The Devil went down to Georgia and he seems to have stolen the soul of the Generals. Georgia had a good run 9 years ago, but came away empty. They consistently make the playoffs, but can't seem to do more than that. They've got a new young QB...maybe Atlanta can RISE UP. (Note: The Generals were originally the Columbia Fire...no relation)
Dakota 8/33 (2034) 1 (2029) 0
Dakota finally seemed to be at the brink of getting their act together. A disappointing play away from a championship 7 years ago, and great QB with 3 very good wide receivers. But Montemayer went to Newark in Free Agency this year and the other WR's were shipped off in trades. Only 8 playoff appearances in 33 years. Dakota seems to have lost their Spirit.
Houston 7/33 (2025) 1 (2022) 0
But Houston's worse. Houston has always been the Renegades, but their logo and colors have changed over the years. The new Miami look, didn't appear to work either, and again they are ownerless. Only 7 appearances in 33 years, and 14 years since their last appearance in the Imperial Bowl. No rings to show for their effort--or lack thereof.
Las Vegas 4/33 (2027) 1 (2024) 0
I've gone on record before calling Las Vegas a cursed franchise. No team has gone through more owners and more changes than the Las Vegas Hookers, Knights, California Chaos, California Heroes (who remembers HA), even the Los Angeles Americans with their American flag helmet, and I think I may even be missing a team in there. The Hookers seem to be a good moniker...they've been used, abused, and thrown away faster than...well....And STILL they are not the worst franchise in IFL history...that might belong to....
Montreal 4/33 (2020) 1 (2017) 0
Yes...the Firebirds. The F-birds as Chris Rex used to call them. From Turquoise and Magenta to the Incredible Hulk like colors, Montreal has been bad--and they've been bad for a very long time. 4 playoff appearances in 33 years and only one appearance in an Imperial Bowl--and THAT 19 years ago. How pathetic! It's no wonder they don the Tampa Bay creamcicle uniforms. But...at least they've made it to the dance. Which is more than I can say for our final 4 teams.
The Hopeless: WHY?????
Lansing 11/33 (2035) 0 0
Lansing is as bad as their helmets suggest. Puke green. Still they are the best of this scrapheap making the playoffs at least a third of the time and visiting again two years ago. They've been to one conference final in 33 years though, and now again without an owner.
Arizona 10/33 (2031) 0 0
I can speak personally for Arizona. Sometimes, I thought I might fire myself. Making the playoffs less than one-third of the time and NOTHING..NOTHING...Calgary is no longer the bottom feeder of the NC West. That belongs to the Wolfpack..or maybe lone wolves. Can Harper actually make a difference. I doubt it. They've been to two Conference Title games. Maybe they should move back to Reno or Carolina...
New Orleans 8/33 (2035) 0 0
The Voodoo...I mean the Demon Deacons, might need some more mojo. 8 playoff appearances. 2 Conference finals. Now new ownership. One playoff appearance would get them out of this cellar. Can they find new magic?
Los Angeles 7/33 (2036) 0 0
And then there's the Matadors...either from Los Angeles or Albuquerque, they haven't been entirely successful. They have never even made it to their Conference Championship. EVER! In FACT. They have won ONE playoff game in 33 years. They wear the badge of shame and are ownerless again. Beware the Orange and Black. This Halloween Story is Scary!
If any new owner wants a challenge. This might be a place to start.
