Looking to add some more talent to an already young team the Crusaders went into the draft with no position safe for 2024. Well other then maybe DE and LT.
With the team sporting 9 picks going into the draft the team was looking to maximize there return in the draft as well as addressing needs or upgrading positions when they felt the need to make the move.
1.1 - Daryl Wiggins - RB - Akron
Featuring maybe the best combines seen in some time for a running back in the IFL, Wiggins will give the Crusaders the every down home run threat that they were missing from last season. Returning QB Antonie Grbac was very excited about the news that he was getting such a powerful weapon on offense.
2.2 - Quentin Moss - TE - SE Oklahoma State
With top TE Juan Dobbs spending more time on the sidelines due to injury the team felt a short game threat was needed for Grbac and the Crusader offense. Enter Moss, flagged as the 3rd best TE prospect in this years draft, he was targeted by Chicago from day one.
2.30 - Tim Sacco - DT - Missouri
While defensive line was not an area many saw as a need for Chicago this draft, there were a few question marks for the team behind starters Peters and Corbett. Former first rounder Sims had been struggling and the team was in talks to move Blake all off-season. The addition of Sacco brings in a DT with size to plug the middle as well as push the starters for playing time.
2.32 - Brad Berryhill - CB - Austin Peay
Small school CBs are a dime a dozen, but there was something about Berryhill that pushed Chicago to move back into the late 2nd to get the young CB. There are a few question marks about Berryhill, but if all holds true he could easily be a starter for the Crusaders.
3.1 - Dusty Cunningham - G - Syracuse
With trades and unsuccessful picks at the G position in past drafts the Crusaders were looking to build on their interior line this draft. Cunningham is a solid option at the G position and should fight for a spot opposite of 7 year vet Brock Colon.
3.14 - DJ Burks - C - Texas Tech
A solid center prospect who should compete with current starter Dunsmore unless he is moved before camp. Burks has the size and agility that Chicago is looking for and is just another piece of the interior line remake for 2024
4.2 - Brent Yarbough - WR - Mississippi State
Yarbourgh brings his return abilities to the IFL and has a very good shot of landing as a start in Chicago by the end of camp.
5.1 - Lincoln Knoff - G/T - Oregon State
Knoff size and agility puts him as a prime candidate to compete against anyone for the starting RG or RT positions during camp. Could he push Brett Burks out of his starting spot at RT?
5.27 - Freddie Shackelford - WLB - Duke
After moving Beisel to SLC, the team needed a WLB pass rush threat to help offset the transition of a new starter at the SLB position. Freddie is the man primed to make that transition easier in 2024.
5.31 - Riddick Sjostrom - T - Washington
Looking to secure the O-Line for 2024 the Crusaders moved back into the 5th to pick up the versatile T from the Huskies. Sjostrom should be a stong backup should a player be lost due to injury.
6.2 - Eugene Lester - CB - Oregon
Nickel and Dime specialist with solid cover ability on the slot receivers. Lester will not be a shoe in but his kick return ability does help his chances of making the team
7.1 - Tyrus Chamberlain - QB - Washington
Chamberlain was a late round pick up by Chicago to bring in another QB into camp to push the incumbent players for the 2024 season. Tyrus has some upside, but will need to work hard to make the team this season.
