  • Matadors: New Coaches, New Faces, New Commitment to Winning

    Coaching Moves

Los Angeles was quiet on the offseason moves that brought new head coach Brenden Boyer to Calfornia. The former Murfreesboro h.c. has had one losing season in 11 years with the Mules, and he guided his team to nine playoff appearances during that time period. Los Angeles in that same period has had zero winning seasons, and along with that pathetic stat, zero playoff appearances. The 59 year old has his work cut out for him.

Boyer asked for, and got, a new offensive coordinator. Preston Hardee, the thirty seven year old former head coach of Stanford Cardinal, was signed to his first coaching position in the Imperial League.

The Matadors are all about a youth movement in the front offices. Former head coach Earle retired after thirteen seasons in Los Angeles and he had but one winning season during that stretch. "We were hamstrung with Earle... we were rebuffed by every head coaching candidate we made offers too, and the fans were loyal to the well loved Earle. He just didn't get it done."

    Offseason Moves

    Free Agent Signing

Veteran Wideout Louis Nafis During His Boilermaker Years

Nafis joins the Matadors after spending four seasons with Little Rock. He started all sixteen games last season for the Toads, and he'll act as backup to split end Frankie Shields. Terms are undisclosed, but he did sign a two year contract.

"King" George finds his way to L.A.!!!

Safety King George Was A Force At Washington

Safety Phillip "King" George, and BPA wideout Dustin Hastings were aquired by L.A. in a package deal with Dakota in that included a third round pick in this season's rookie draft.

Both players fill needs for the Matadors. Los Angeles' pass defense was one of the worst in the league last season and the move looks to have suddenly made it potentially better. Rookie Antoine Bruce, a fourth round pick from SMU, was pressed into the starting role, and, while performing pretty well for a rookie, at 27/38 this season, was underwhelming. He gets moved to backup where he has time to develop. Bruce was always a move out of necessity, and George makes that position much more dangerous. Matador fans already recognize George as he assumes the Secondary Leader role for the team.

Split end Dustin Hasting, formerly a sixth round pick by Dakota out of Wake Forest is a fan favorite. His Big Play Receiving reputation precedes him, and while his endurance bar is pretty low, he'll assume the role Rob Dodge had last season at split end. Los Angeles needed a wideout, and the trade gives us a serviceable one that fills that need in the two or three spot.

    The Rookie Draft

3.13. RB Fernando Banks, San Jose State
    5-11, 216 lbs.
    Did Not Interview
    High Volatility

    Rookie Rating Pre TC: 30/51

Banks doesn't have the speed of Mallard, but he is strong and looks like a great number two option and kick returner. Backup back Briggs will get a shot at remaining with the team as a third back, but won't be with the team after his first contract expires.

3.19. OLB Terrance Bell, Cheyney University
      6-4, 265 lbs
      Very high volatility
      Interviewed: Hard 2 Read

Rookie Rating Pre TC: 28/44 as SLB
      32/50 as LDE

He needs to lose weight, but I like his height. We are thin at linebacker and getting old there and I didn't want to go into the season without grabbing a backup for development sake, and just in case.

And after looking at his height and weight, I convert him to LDE and he gains in both present and future ratings. So, he's a left defensive end. And with starting left defensive end Bullock entering his ninth season, this isn't a bad move.

Nice articles! Can't wait until the Matadors start winning and we see some post-season write-ups about them.

          4-15. QB Dwayne Estrada, Memphis
          6-2, 225 lbs.
          Average volatility
          Didn't Interview

          Rookie Pre TC Ratings: 20/41

Position Drill, formations, arm strength, read defense, timing, accuracy, and scramble frequency all caught my eye. Affinity with one team leader pretty much convinced me that he was a solid propsect. Agility combine score sucks, as does the Broad Jump score, but average intel, good forty time and that bench score...I figured...hell, I have an open slot at qb...why not fill it in the fourth?

5.14. FB Brady Brandon, Cal Golden Bears
            6-3, 265 lbs.
            Very low volatility
Didn't Interview (hell, I hardly interview anyone)

            Rookie Pre TC Ratings: 20/42

Another guy that needs to slim down in weight training, he's not a bad fullback at all. Run and Pass Blocking look solid, blocking strength is slightly below average, but Position Drill is great. Bars look workable.

Give our starter Janis somebody decent to work with.

            So Far,

Our rookie draft is ...average. Nothing to write home about and the critics are correct. Our big win came in the trade for the "King" Phillips...he helps our team's defense in much the same way the trade for "Bazooka" Barlow helped our offense.

            It solved a problem area.

Next season we'll have a first round pick...again!

              6-13. TE Hunter Schulz, Utah
              6-3, 245 lbs.
              very high volatility

              Rookie Pre TC Rating: 24/53

His bars and combines should stick where they are and Stelmack seems to indicate they won't drop much. Potentially he'll flirt with a 50 rating eventually.

Height and weight are both below average for a tight end, but the guy doesn't drop passes, has strong endurance bars, and great special teams bars.

And that last one is important. He needs to contribute to special teams.

7-15. DT Jimmie Pender, Cal Golden Bears
                6-3, 304 lbs.
                Very Low Volatility.
                Affinity with Team Leader

Rookie Pre TC Rating: As DT: 15/51 As DE 14/54

Second Cal Golden Bear, and third rookie from the state of California's colleges. We don't have much of a scouting budget.

He's average height, average weight, and his bars look very solid for a seventh rounder. He's not developed much, and the low volatility will mean a long time getting to his potential. But, he does have that affinity.

Combines look solid but his strength is slightly below average.

nice reads - looks like you have a good find in DE Bell. I think if I'm going to take the next step in drafting I need to spend the extra time evaluating whether or not players can position switch.

QB Bazooka Gum Barlow, and defensive end "near &" Fehr, are holding out.

Bastards are holding us hostage, and we're up against the cap financially.

Moves have been made to free up money to satisfy Barlow's ass, and Fehr can go kiss my butt.

And 2nd year center Spencer Gliniak returns from Summer Camp 47/54, a nice improvement.

Okay, there's nothing to brag about, nothing to whine about. It's a pretty serviceable draft considering we didn't draft until the third round.

But man, did we improve our safeties with the addition of King George.
