WINDY CITY PRESS - Chicago's Trading Breakdown

Now that the main rush of the 2021 draft is over, and it appears that the Chicago Front Office is done wheeling and dealing. We figured now would be as good of time as ever to break down the trades made by the Crusaders this off-season.

In all the Crusaders front office made a total of 4 trades thus far, and in those trades the team lost 3 key players, 3 role players, 4 Chicago draft picks, and 2 picks acquired in other trades. In return the team picked up 5 players, 9 draft picks (including 4 1st - with one traded). Now to take a look at each deal...

The first trade was with Iceman's former team Los Angeles in sending a 2022 fifth round selection for QB Mack Janis.

The second trade was with Houston which was considered by many as a major move on behalf of Chicago in showing that they were really looking to rebuild. Chicago sent former 1st round selection Karl Negrete, OLB Wade Robbins, ILB Wendall Porter, and S Adrian Janes to Houston for 2 1st rounders, 2nd rounder, future 4th rounder and OL Gino Newsome.

In trade three, announced almost immediately after the Houston Trade, Chicago sent WR Corwin Springs, T Charlie Rivera, Houston's 2022 first, 3.23 (acquired in a trade last season), 2023 2nd rounder, and 2022 4th rounder to Fresno for T Shaun Cunningham, RB Gerald Johnstone, CB Robert Moss, and a future 7th rounder.

And in their final trade, Chicago traded down with another former Iceman team and acquired 2 1st and 2 2nds from Georgia (aka Columbus Fire) for Chicago 4th overall selection in this years draft.

And with many of the picks that were traded in this years draft complete, the teams overall breakdown of these trades is as follows.

    Lost

    WR Springs
    CB Negrete
    OLB Robbins
    ILB Porter
    S Janes
    T Rivera
1.4 - Sparkman was targeted by Chicago but the deal was to good to pass up
    2022 4th
    2023 2nd
(other team selections 3.23 and Houston's 2022 first)

    Gained

T Cunningham - Anchor of the OL for years to come
RB Johnstone - Proven IFL running back and building block
QB Janis - Potential starter after missed additions in FA and Draft
    G Newsome - Potential starting G
    CB Moss - CB Depth
1.18 (from Houston)- Turned into CB Kyle Battle (41/72 pre-camp) Negrete replacement?
1.23 (From Georgia)- Turned into ILB Marvin Ammons (28/69 pre-camp)
2.14 (From Georgia)- Turned into TE Juan Dabbs (46/69 pre-camp)
2.17 (from Houston)- Turned into CB Mercury Sheldon (22/62 pre-camp)
    2022 1st (Georgia)
    2022 2nd (Georgia)
    2023 4th (Houston)
    2023 7th (Fresno)

    Overall

Lost - Starting WR, CB, OLB and Backup ILB, S Tackle.. Higher #1 and future 2nd and 4th

Gained Starting T, RB, 2 CB, ILB, TE, G.. QB/CB depth.. and 4 future selections

And this is just from the draft. We have not covered the additions in FA yet...

Its been and exciting year in Chicago... now to see if the fans respond by coming out to the games.

    2021 - Chicago Crusaders Draft

    1.18 - CB - Kyle Battle - South Florida (41/72 Pre-Camp - 44/64 Post Camp)
    Projection - Starting CB

Battle fills the hole in the secondary left by the trade of Karl Negrete. Big shoes to fill, but the Crusaders front office seems to think he is a better fit for the teams defense in 2021

    1.23 - ILB - Marvin Ammons - North Carolina (28/69 Pre-Camp - 34/69 Post Camp)
    Projection - Starting ILB

Ammons fills a major need on the defense for the Crusaders. And is favored to start immediately in 2021

    2.3 - OLB - Brandon Paxson - Lafayette (17/71 Pre-Camp - 20/62 Post Camp)
    Projection - Starting WLB

Paxson appears to be the heir apparent to Wade Robbins who was moved to Houston via trade.

    2.14 - TE - Juan Dabbs - Colgate (46/69 Pre-Camp - 49/63 Post Camp)
    Projection - Starting TE

A true need pick by Chicago. They pick up the top TE in the draft who should start this season.

    2.17 - CB - Mercury Sheldon - Arizona (22/62 Pre-Camp - 26/57 Post Camp)
    Projection - Starting CB

Sheldon adds a potential rookie starting combo in the secondary for the Crusaders in 2021.

    3.2 - DT - Christian Mahovlich - Illinois (20/54 Pre-Camp - 23/49 Post Camp)
    Projection - Backup DT

Another need pick, size and speed are key.. Should be an interesting addition to a very young defensive line.

    4.1 - QB - Neil Alston - Stanford (17/42 Pre-Camp - 20/39 Post Camp)
Projection - Free Agent with out a good camp

After watching May get taken by Reno in the first round, Chicago still wanted to go QB in the draft but focused on other areas. Alston will have a chance to compete in camp.

    5.4 - SS - Zack Diaz - California (14/53 Pre-Camp - 16/48 Post Camp)
    Projection - Starting SS

With Luke Lynch locking down the FS slot the team needed some depth at SS, Diaz should push Willig for playing time at SS

    5.10 - T - Brett Burks - Texas Christian (19/55 Pre-Camp - 22/51 Post Camp)
    Projection - Backup T

With Charlie Sharpe in what could be his final IFL season, Burks should be targeted to learn from two of the best tackles in the league and hopefully fill the shoes when needed.

    6.3 - DT - Willard Peters - North Texas (23/41 Pre-Camp - 29/43 Post Camp)
    Projection - Backup DT

A big run stuffer who needs some work, but with the teams need at DT he is a player that could benefit from the need for depth here.

    7.2 - QB - George Poston - Iowa (18/46 Pre-Camp - 23/41 Post Camp)
    Projection - Backup QB

With QB a need position bringing in extra arms to fight it out appears to be the goal of the Crusaders... It will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

I'd love to have Ammons and Sheldon with my picks, so you clearly made out on this deal Oh well, live and learn. That's why I generally don't trade away 1st rounders, I didn't expect the class to be this deep. Terrible year to make the trade for me.

Wheelin and Dealin continues in Chicago...

Chicago continues to stay active in the draft, moving future picks it picked up in earlier trades to add depth to the training camp roster as well as potential diamonds in the rough.

                    Trade with STL - Sent Houston's 2023 4th for a 5th this season
                    Trade with LAW - Sent Fresno's 2023 7th for a 7th this season

                    The shake up continues.
