  • Louisiana selects..(2019)

    Round 2
2.6 LT Dexter Rhodes, Notre Dame

Rhodes has the prototypical body type you look for in a LT standing at 6'5" and weighing in at 315 lbs. His pass blocking technique is sound as he makes good use of his hands and has excellent feet for a big guy, and that should make up for what he's lacking in raw strentgh early in his career - he should be able to put a couple pounds on. Rhodes is looking forward to battling with Jake Germaine at training camp for the starting job at LT.

2.28 DT Levon Brandon, Alabama A&M

Levon is a unstoppable force wound into 6'1" 291 pound frame - this is a DT that can do well in both a 4-3 or 3-4 scheme - that alone should tell you how strong this kid is. He is stout against the run but can also collapse the pocket and is no stranger to introducing pretty boy QB'S to the turf. He has a good motor and will hit you in the mouth - you'll most likely see him playing at the 5-technique in LOU's 3-4 scheme.

    Round 3

3.4 RT Norman Chryplewicz, Fort Valley State

This Wildcat is now a member of the Voodoo's OL unit. Big man at 6'5" 324 lbs. who might be a better pass blocker than Rhodes but isn't comfortable playing at LT. Sound technique wise, good feet - expolsion of the line on run plays is a corcern but he finishes his blocks most of the time. Norman will battle Brad Godfrey for the start job at RT in training camp.

3.6 DT Gary Siplon, Ole Miss

Gary Siplon and Levon Brandon might as well be cut from the same cloth as they have similar skill sets. Siplon's strentgh allows him to play in mutiple schemes. He can recognize how teams are trying to block him and that allows him to fight through the trash towards the ballcarrier against the run. Has a motor but prefers to bull rush and collapse the pocket on passing plays. He'll play at the 5-technique opposite of Levon.

3.17 SLB Roman Berton, South Carolina

6'3" 259 lbs. Ran a 4.74 40-time and had a productive combine - On tape this man made plays when his defense needed him to - The Voodoo are hoping his game tranlates to the IFL, especially since the past couple of years there's been no one on the opposite side of Ike Cook that could pull their own weight. Roman is a solid run defender and seems to be a natural in man-to-man and zone coverage - he can read his keys quick enough to let his talent do the rest. He's also flashed that he has the ability to get to the QB and that has the fans excited - but can he get to the QB consistently enough to be a force? He'll most likely win the starting job at SLB in training camp.

      Round 5

      5.6 DE Robert Jarvis, Montana

Jarvis is a very good pass rusher - He can put a move on you whether it be a spin, rip,or swim, but can also ovepower you with a bull rush on his way to the QB. Although he is strong enough to play a 5-technique in the 3-4, he's to undersized, only standing at 6'1" , 259 lbs. His football IQ is pretty good and after running a 4.88 40 at the combine, we may be looking at a tweener who could play at an OLB spot down the road - the only knock on this guys game is he is not as stout in the run game as you would like, and only time will tell if he can comprehend coverage responsiblities - we'll have to see what he does in training camp.

                Round 5 (cont.)

                5.29 ILB Byron Copley, Florida

The Voodoo really need help on the inside - the past two years It's been Irv Cordona as the only real starter and a rotation between so other guys in the other ILB spot. Copley is a run stuffer who can also get to the QB in Louisiana's aggresive 3-4 - He also excels in man-to-man coverage but could be exploited if left in a zone coverage. Doesn't explode through the ballcarrier as much you'd like but he makes sure that when he gets there the play is over. He can also help on special teams - knock on him is he's a little undersized for a 3-4 linebacker seeing as he'll have to deal with guards coming right at him. If he does well in training camp he'll eventually work his way in to a starting role perhaps.

                  Round 7

7.6 RB Shawn Cates, Saint Francis (PA)

Cates is a jack of all trades back - his game is similar to that of Voodoo's star RB Vincent Tribble. He has a burst when running in between the tackles and is dangerous in the open field. Also he's a threat out of the backfield and can be worked into the passing game with flats and screens, or even lineup in the slot because of his route running technique and sure hands - and did we mention he could make an impact on special teams covering kicks and returning punts. While he doesn't have elite vision for a back in the IFL there are so many other parts to his game that he's done well in his college career that you can't help but like the guy - he'll be fighting for a roster spot and maybe even a chance to spell the Voodoo's star RB.
