  • TB "King Of The Hill" Rankings

    Trivia Bytes ... August 4, 2007

The TB staff announces its inaugural release of its KING of the HILL Ranking System. The System employs a unique methodology. It has thrown out complex formulas that try to weight schedules, home field advantage and other such subtle nuances that are found in other ranking systems.

Instead, the King of the Hill Ranking System is heavily biased to "what have you done for me lately" and uses the simple rules of the old schoolboy game, "King of the Hill": climb to the top - stay there and you win - stumble with a loss and you are thrown down the hill.

RANKING CRITERION 1 "of what have you done for me lately": LOSSES are the key factor of the rankings and teams are first sorted by the number of incurred losses. A loss can throw a team considerably down the hill and it will need to regroup for the climb again. Note that teams may have an unequal number of wins that are a result of the bye weeks. A team is not penalized because it did not play in a given week.

RANKING CRITERION 2 "of what have you done for me lately": PEDIGREES are also important. There are many teams that are in the playoffs year after year and TB has a bias that these teams will probably get there again. So for the second sort, teams with the same loss records are resorted by pedigree (based on the past season performances except for situations explained in Criterion 3). There is a bias that treats playoff performance on a higher level than the pure win-loss record of a team.

RANKING CRITERION 3 "of what have you done for me lately":
A winner of a head-to-head game in the "current season" will automatically rank it ahead of the loser of that game and also for the remainder of the season. This can present a situation where performance in the prior year is overrided and given less emphasis.

Not sure being on top of the hill is very good either. No team has been able to defend the top for more than one week.

no slight to the work being done here (as I see my post from Sunday), it's just very depressing. I've always prided myself on keeping this team on the up and up every year, always fielding a competitive team.
This year sucks and is difficult to handle for me.
