    PRESEASON GAME 1 (2010)

    SEALS 13, RENO 0

The Seals wrapped up their first preseason game in victorious fashion, but perhaps more importantly, in healthy fashion. The media tapped Teddy Fields as the game's MVP. He had an interception and two passes defensed as the Seals shut out a frustrated Wolfpack offense. As mentioned, no new injuries to report - that's always a good thing this time of year. Here are my ratings for the game (out of five stars):

SEALS OFFENSE -- 2 stars: 4.1 yards per play and 2 turnovers won't get it down during the regular season

SEALS DEFENSE -- 5 stars: The defense forced two turnovers and held the Wolpack to a measly 2.6 yards per play

SEALS SPECIAL TEAMS -- 4 stars: Few problems here as Gaston Cottrell put 4 punts inside the 20 and the return game was better than average

QB JAY CARO -- 3 stars: Not too bad, not too great

QB ALFRED SULLIVAN -- 1 star: The rookie looked a little lost out there in his pro debut

RB JEFF BORREGO -- 2 stars: Borrego failed to impress in his 18 touches

WR DOMINIC FIELD -- 2 stars: The star receiver was held in check most of the time he was on the field

WR HUGH LABROSSE -- 4 stars: 3 catches, 3 good returns, 3 tackles, 1 fumble

ILB DANIEL STICKNEY -- 4 stars: The veteran linebacker seemingly was all over the field

CB TEDDY FIELDS -- 4 stars: Impressive pro debut as he returned an interception for 32 yards and defensed two other passes thrown his way

CB JUAN CARLISLE -- 4 stars: The nickel/dime back added a sack to 3 hurries

      PRESEASON GAME 2 (2010)

      SEALS 25, MADISON 24

The Seals continued their winning ways in the exhibition season by defeating the Madison Demons 25-24. Punter (and kicker?) Gaston Cottrell was named the game's MVP as he took on full-time kicking and punting duties this game, apparently to a depth chart gaffe by GM jeff. In the effort he punted inside the 20 three times as well as nailing four field goals, three of them being longer than 40 yards. Game ratings are as follows (out of five stars)

SEALS OFFENSE -- 2 stars: Eerily similar stats to last week's preseason game

SEALS DEFENSE -- 2 stars: The defense was not as sharp as last week. The Demons gained 371 yards in the air, but did commit three turnovers

      SEALS SPECIAL TEAMS
-- 4 stars: Gaston Cottrell was brilliant as he filled both kicking roles. Rusty Ramos did cause the kickoff return team some headaches

QB JAY CARO -- NA stars: Jay Caro did not play in Week 2

QB ALFRED SULLIVAN -- 3 stars: The rookie improved upon his Week 1 performance completing 61% of his passes and throwing one TD along with one interception

RB KERRY GLENN -- 3 stars: Kerry was held in check most of the day, but he did reel off a 30+ yarder in the 2nd half. Finished with 68 yards on 17 carries with one TD

WR GASTON WILLIAMS -- 4 stars: Gaston Williams still making a bid to start across from Dominic Field. 5 catches for 64 yards and a TD

P GASTON COTTRELL - 5 stars: See above

ILB DANIEL STICKNEY - 4 stars: Another standout defensive performance. The veteran had 10 tackles, 2 assists, and half a sack

CB TEDDY FIELDS -- 4 stars: The 1st round pick had another solid performance as he defended 2 passes and made his 2nd interception of the exhibition season

There is one injury to report, albeit a fairly minor one. Starting right guard T.J. Doser is questionable with a sprain knee. He will likely miss the rest of the preseason. The Seals signed what will probably be a temporary replacement in Dennis Meadows, an undrafted rookie free agent.

        PRESEASON GAME 3 (2010)

SEALS 34, SALT LAKE CITY 8

The Seals pummeled the Stallions of Salt Lake City in their third exhibition matchup. The story of the game was the Seals passing attack as Alfred Sullivan and Jay Caro put on a showcase. Sullivan, later named the game's MVP, was 16-16 for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns.

SEALS OFFENSE -- 5 stars: Precision passing and 3 drives of 75 yards or more

SEALS DEFENSE -- 4 stars: The Stallions offense was held in complete check for the first 2.5 quarters

        SEALS SPECIAL TEAMS
-- 3 stars: Punter Gaston Cottrell was solid again, but everything else was fairly "meh"

QB JAY CARO -- 4 stars: An incompletion? Heavens no!

QB ALFRED SULLIVAN -- 5 stars: Put up a spectacular performance for a greenhorn

RB KERRY GLENN -- 5 stars: The unsung hero as he put up 136 yards on the ground including 6 runs of 10 or more yards

WR BLAKE AMECHE -- 5 stars: Helping his bid in securing the #2 wideout spot, Ameche took a couple to the house

CB TEDDY FIELDS -- 4 stars: Two more passes defensed for the young corner

Cornerback Joe Martin is said to have sprained his ankle. Nothing serious though and he should be ready for the start of the regular season.

          PRESEASON GAME 4 (2010)

          SEALS 38, PITTSBURGH 14

The Seals finished the exhibition season a perfect 4-0 as they beat up on the Pittsburgh Power. Rookie signal caller Alfred Sullivan was the story of the game (again) as he led an efficient passing attack. His final line: 19-23, 278 yards, 3 TD's, 0 INT's

SEALS OFFENSE -- 4 stars: Passing game was marvelous, the running game left something to be desired

SEALS DEFENSE -- 4 stars: Didn't shut the Power down, but the "D" did cause some headaches

          SEALS SPECIAL TEAMS
-- 5 stars: Solid kicking and punting and a punt return for a TD to boot

QB ALFRED SULLIVAN -- 5 stars: #3 QB or #2? Sullivan may have impressed the coaching staff enough this preseason to surpass Jerry Stclair on the depth charts

RB JEFF BORREGO -- 3 stars: The 1st round pick saw the most action in the backfield and he did alright, but just alright

WR PAUL BARLEY -- 4 stars: Only had three balls tossed his way, but he made the most of one of them as he took a pass 92 yards for a highlight reel touchdown

OLB Andre Munoz -- 4 stars: Munoz gets four stars for the entire preseason as he played pretty solid while learning a new position

CB TEDDY FIELDS -- 5 stars: Two more picks for the kid, so make that 4 interceptions and 6 passes defensed in four games for the rookie defender

Wide receiver Gaston Williams' day ended abruptly as he left the field with a strained hamstring. He's listed as questionable and a timetable for his recovery is unknown.

FIELD HOPES FOR A HEALTHIER 2010

Eight and three: Say those number to Dominic Field and he can't help but shake his head. Separate season-ending injuries limited the skilled receiver's playing time to eight games in 2008 and only three plays in 2009.

"It's tough. In this game there isn't anything worse than standing on the sidelines in street clothes," Field shared.

The former 7th overall pick contributed quickly as he compiled over 1,200 yards receiving in his rookie campaign while running away with Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Since then it's been another story as two offseason's worth of expectations have not been met. Entering only his 4th season Field has been labeled injury-prone. Some have even gone as far as calling him soft.

"I don't let that stuff bother me. Throughout my high school and college career I missed maybe two or three games tops (don't go checking his TCY career MrB!). As for me being soft, the people that know me best know how bad I want to be out there."

One hot topic this past offseason involved Field as trade bait for a player that might be able to stay on the field more. While GM jeff quickly scoffed at such a notion, talk show callers piled on Field.

Noted Field, "I think fans were frustrated and I can definitely understand that. All this adversity is feeding me though. I'm in the best shape of my life right now and there's definitely a part of me that wants to prove all of the naysayers wrong."

As for numbers he'd would like to be reminded of next year, "One and one," Field chuckled. "One championship for the Seals and one Imperial Bowl ring for me."

It's worth mentioning that you don't get a ring if you aren't on the field at season's end.

                      WEEK 1 (2010)

                      ALBUQUERQUE 19, SEALS 16

After finishing the preseason a perfect 4-0 the Seals fell flat on their backsides in a 16-19 loss to the division-rival Matadors. What did they do wrong? You name it. The ground game was atrocious and Jay Caro was as bad as I've seen in years. To make matters worse, the Seals already have to deal with the injury bug.

SEALS OFFENSE -- 1 star: The good news is that it's only the first week of the season and things can only get better, really

SEALS DEFENSE -- 3 stars: The defense was not spectacular by any means, but they did enough to win the game

                      SEALS SPECIAL TEAMS
-- 3 stars: Average day in all aspects of the special teams

SEALS PASS RUSH -- 5 stars: Didn't matter much in the end, but if the front seven can provide six sacks a game it could be a long season for opposing QB's

QB JAY CARO -- 1 star: Completed less than 50% of his passes whilst throwing for no TD's and one pick. Hate to do it, but one star it is

OFFENSIVE LINE -- 1 star: One key run block = 1 star

WR DOMINIC FIELD -- 3 stars: In his much anticipated return Field was just okay

DE BRIAN ADAMOV -- 5 stars: One of the lone bright spots as the 2nd year end had 7 tackles, 1 assist, 2 sacks, 2 hurries, 1 blocked pass, and 1 forced fumble - phew

CB TEDDY FIELDS -- 3 stars: The rookie returned a fumble to the house, but not much else besides taking himself out of the game and the forseeable future as he pulled a calf muscle

I mentioned the injury bug up above. Here they are:

DE Fernando Moss -- Severe Hamstring Pull -- Out (11 weeks)
CB Teddy Fields -- Pulled Calf Muscle -- Out (6 weeks)
OLB Mark Segura -- Sprained Knee -- Questionable (3 weeks)
WR Gaston Williams -- Strained Hamstring -- Questionable (Unknown)
ILB Tim Canterbury -- Shoulder Tendinitis -- Probable (4 weeks)

The Seals may have to pull the plug on Moss and put him on IR as he'll miss more than half of the season. That'll be a shame if that ends up being the case. The guy really came into his own last season (10.5 sacks, 25 hurries).

Next week the Seals travel to British Columbia to face the 1-0 Vancouver Killer Whales. See you after the game (or 6 days and 23 hours after)!!

                        WEEK 2 (2010)

                        SEALS 33, VANCOUVER 13

The Seals took out any frustration that was left lingering from Week 1 on the Killer Whales as they beat them soundly. Receiver Blake Ameche went over 100 yards receiving for the 7th time in his career and QB Jay Caro rebounded from a very poor first week performance. The Seals outscored Vancouver in each quarter and dominated time of possession.

SEALS OFFENSE -- 4 stars: Not an overwhelming performance by any means, but 33 points should get you a win 90% of the time

SEALS DEFENSE -- 3 stars: The pass defense was spotty once again, but other than that the Killer Whales were held in check

                        SEALS SPECIAL TEAMS
-- 4 stars: Kicker Jaime Dorris made all four field goals he kicked and everyone else was solid

SEALS RUNNING GAME -- 3 stars: I thought the offensive line did fine run blocking with the exception of T.J. Doser (1 for 11 in KRB). Starting RB Kerry Glenn struggled again (2.5 ypc)

QB JAY CARO -- 4 stars: This was the Jay Caro we're used to seeing. Completed better than 75% of his passes and didn't turn the ball over

                        WR BLAKE AMECHE --
5 stars: On a day where Dominic Field was held in check once again Ameche stepped up brilliantly with 110 yards receiving and a TD to boot
DE BRIAN ADAMOV -- 4 stars: Another good performance. 1.5 sacks, 4 hurries, 2 knockdowns, and a forced fumble

CB TEDDY FIELDS -- 3 stars: The rookie returned a fumble to the house, but not much else besides taking himself out of the game and the forseeable future as he pulled a calf muscle
                        No new injuries to report:

DE Fernando Moss -- Severe Hamstring Pull -- Out (10 weeks) *IR*
CB Teddy Fields -- Pulled Calf Muscle -- Out (5 weeks)
OLB Mark Segura -- Sprained Knee -- Questionable (2 weeks)
WR Gaston Williams -- Strained Hamstring -- Questionable (Unknown)
ILB Tim Canterbury -- Shoulder Tendinitis -- Probable (3 weeks)

Next week the Seals take on the 2-0 Snipe Hunters of Iowa City in their home opener. Should be a good game, so I'll see you then (maybe even before)!

                          SEALS INK TWO TO EXTENSIONS

The Seals announced that they have extended the contracts of two players. Both FB Terrance Greeley and WR Blake Ameche had one year left on their contracts before deciding to prolong their careers in Portland.

Terrance Greeley has spent his entire IFL career as a Seal since being picked in the 20th round of the Imperial Inaugural Draft. He has amassed over 5,000 yards from scrimmage along with 48 combined touchdowns in his seven plus seasons. Greeley was named All-League 1st Team Fullback in both 2006 and 2009.

Blake Ameche was a 2nd round selection of Portland in the 2007 Amateur Draft. In 3+ seasons he has accumlated 151 receptions, 2,550 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns.

                          Said GM jeff at a small press conference, "Today we've not only extended the contracts of two outstanding football players, we've extended the contracts of two outstanding human beings." {insert puking noise here}
