  • Seals Update

After losing only one starter off of a 14-2 team, no sane person expected the Seals to shake things up too much this offseason. Expectations have been met, but that's not to say that everything has been silent at Seals HQ. With over ten million dollars available in cap room for free agent acquisitions the team has been busy adding depth at various spots of their roster.

"We didn't want to switch up too many things," GM Jeff said. "But we also didn't want to sit back and be complacent. Competition in the summertime is a good thing and we're going to make sure we have a full roster going into training camp and the preseason."

While pre-draft free agency hasn't concluded, things have certainly died down and it appears that the Seals are probably done signing players for now. Since March eight new players have been signed to contracts. Perhaps the most notable of the new acquisitions is offensive linemen [ifl]Gerald Stevenson[/ifl]. Stevenson was a full-time starter at left tackle for the Louisiana Voodoo the past two seasons after latching on with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2006. Management believes Stevenson has the ability to play multiple positions, something he did in college at USC. Look for him to slide into the right tackle position, a move that will keep [ifl]Joseph Reynolds[/ifl] sandwiched between [ifl]Levon Abrams[/ifl] and [ifl]Abel Boyd[/ifl] on the left side of the line. Here are some short notes about the other seven signees:

[ifl]Paul Barley[/ifl] -- Veteran wideout who has spent his entire career as a Beast. Barley is a slot receiver who looks to be option #4 at this point.

[ifl]Rondell Harpold[/ifl] -- Backup corner for the Stallions the past seven years. Decent shot to make the team as he can play some special teams.

[ifl]Preston Flynn[/ifl] -- Defensive back who played in seven games for the Seals in '07. Journeyman who would need to have a pretty good summer to make the squad.

[ifl]Skip Hildebrand[/ifl] -- Hildebrand marked his spot in IFL lore when he brought the Anchorage Lynx to the championship game his rookie season. 50/50 chance he backs up [ifl]Jay Caro[/ifl] in 2010.

[ifl]Alan Banks[/ifl] -- Specials teams guy who last played in the league with Oakland in 2008 when GM Jeff poked around the Bay Area. Very good chance he makes the cuts.

[ifl]Hunter Daianu[/ifl] -- Guard who was the Bulldogs 5th round choice in the '08 draft. Had MCL damage in his knee in 2009 and has never played a down in the IFL. Outlook: Meh.

[ifl]Cary Tuaolo[/ifl] -- Undrafted tight end who spent time with the Outlaws in 2009 and was released early this offseason. Could find his way onto the team has he has exceptional long-snapping skills.

Next up is every fan's favorite part of the offseason. The draft. Don't expect much noise from me though. Things at HQ are tighter than leather pants on a rock star!

The Portland Seals selected cornerback Teddy Fields, a Florida Gator, with the 26th pick of the draft. Yes, they moved up, losing one of their 4th round picks in the process. I'll have more comments on this pick when the draft is finished, but for now I found a little video of him. That boy has some hops!

The 2010 Imperial draft wrapped up earlier this week. After some dealing and wheeling the Seals ended up making six selections in all, including two first round picks.

The Seals began the draft with pick 1-30 as their highest selection. As the names came off the board they couldn't stand pat and watch one of their targets get swooped up from underneath them. The Seals traded pick 1.30 and 4.9 to Salt Lake City for pick 1.26, which they used to take Teddy Fields, a cornerback from the University of Florida. Fields was an All-American his senior season and impressed many scouts at the draft combine. He put up the top broad jump score of any player. With an impressive training camp Fields could secure a starting spot with the Seals. Otherwise, he'll be a nickel back at worst.

GM Jeff's take on Field: We had [Fields] very high on our board. When the cornerback crop started thinning out we felt it was best to be proactive, so we moved up and got our guy. We think there is pro bowl talent underneath the surface. Teddy will be given every opportunity to succeed here in Portland.

The Seals' next pick was at 2-11, but again they traded up as they saw good value on the board. They sent pick 2-11, 2-30, and 5-30 to the Power for 1-29 and 3-29. The pick was a bit of a shocker as they took runningback Jeff Borrego from Texas Tech. Borrego accumulated over 4,000 yards and 40 TD's in his collegiate career. Last season the Seals spread the love on the ground, so I would expect the Seals to even the load between Borrego and last year's 2nd round pick Kerry Glenn in 2010. It appears that [ifl]Rusty Long[/ifl] may be the odd man out.

GM Jeff's take on Borrego: Jeff was a guy who we had very high on our board even though we didn't initially plan on selecting a back. When he starting slipping we felt that he could give us some good value, so we made the move. The kid is a bruiser and he can catch the ball. It's certainly possible for him to be the #1 guy in the backfield when the season rolls around.

After trading both of their 2nd round picks away their next pick was 3.29, which was acquired from Pittsburgh. The Seals stayed aggressive and unpredictable as they selected one of the higher-rated quartersbacks in Alfred Sullivan. Sullivan was a bluechip recruit out of HS in Texas who had a so-so career at Texas A&M. Not really sure what to expect out of him, but it's not like the Seals have to rush the guy. Being a 3rd round pick it's a given that he'll make the team though.

GM Jeff's take on Sullivan: Again, we picked a guy at a position where we were fine at. We felt Sullivan should've been picked in one of the first two rounds, so we were more than happy to take a flier on him with our 3rd round pick.

At pick 4-30 the Seals took safety Horace Cardenas out of Texas. Cardenas was a four-year starter who was ranked the #9 high school prospect in his class. He was named an All-American in his junior season, one in which he returned two interceptions for touchdowns. Cardenas had an impressive combine and should turn some heads this summer.

GM Jeff's take on Cardenas: One of our goals in this draft was to get younger on defense. Horace was a terrific player in college and we're glad we got a player of his caliber so late in the draft. We expect him to be a fulltime starter in a couple of years.

With a pick each in the 6th and 7th rounds the Seals took another corner in Arnie Bogan at 6-30 before selecting outside linebacker Joey Henderson at 7-30. Bogan was a standout player in high school, but that didn't translate to college as he never started a game at Georgia. Henderson played college ball at Boise State and was a four-year starter. It's tough to say whether or not either of them will make the team at this point.

It'll be interesting to see the newest Seals in camp as they took a lot of combine studs. The team will be talking to the agents of each player in hopes of getting them all in camp on time. Besides that you can expect the Seals to make offers to a number of undrafted free agents to fill their roster out.

Training camp begins in July, so I'll see you then!

I'm in a bit of a rush here - at the airport actually. I did take some miscellaneous notes on how the rookies are looking thus far in training camp, so I'd like to share them with you:

1.26 - CB Teddy Fields (+2) -- I was expecting to see a little more from Fields as management talked him up a good bit. Still should figure to see plenty of playing time as there are no standouts in the Seals' secondary.

1.29 - RB Jeff Borrego (-10) -- Not the same guy that I saw at the IFL Combine. The Seals have to be hitting themselves in the head for passing on Andy Crawford, who was picked two spots later. Borrego could get lost in the shuffle instead of standing out like GM Jeff was hoping.

3.29 - QB Alfred Sullivan (+9) -- Sullivan has looked great thus far. Should be a fun guy to track for the next few years.

4.30 - S Horace Cardenas (+5) -- Cardenas is a nice prospect as well. He plays at full speed all of the time. So much in fact that he got involved in a skirmish with veteran corner Gary Montiel.

6.30 - CB Arnie Bogan (+5) -- Bogan is helping his chances to make the team with a solid camp. Not sure what the CB depth chart is going to look like at this point.

7.30 - OLB Joey Henderson (+5) -- Off the radar guy who could make the team as several veterans look to have regressed. His Achilles heel might be that he isn't much of a special teams player.

                  Wish me safe flying!

Before I picked Borrego I planned on giving Glenn the majority of the carries. That'll probably be the case now.

I'm really not that mad at myself for passing on Crawford. I didn't see any reason to believe that Borrego was going to bust. However, I didn't interview a single runningback in the draft because I didn't expect to pick one. That didn't help me help decide between him and Crawford. Luck of the draw I guess. :|

And Vermont is happy you did.. I tried my best to deal for that very pick that you used to get Borrego, initially not thinking I would get a shot at a top notch running back.. then someone got greedy, and I didn't feel needy, so I passed.. only to get Crawford fall and I dealt with Jester instead and boy am I happy I did today.

Crawford could've busted had I taken him. I'm pretty sure that random booms are still in the game and Borrego is proof of that. Bottom line is that I've had two highly-selected RB's bust on me now ([ifl]Marty Webber[/ifl] anyone?). Traded up to get both too. :x
