    Atlanta Meet the Georgia Generals...

Now that the much anticipated move of the Columbia Fire to Atlanta has finally been completed, many in the organization shifted their focus on promoting the now Georgia Generals to their local fans. The team’s promotional department has started a local caravan tour with several players and representatives hitting local hot spots for autograph signings, season ticket selling drives, and to get the word out about the upcoming season. The team has also announced that there will be a Fan Fest this weekend to give their fans a chance to meet the players, coaches, and to show of the teams new 70000 seat domed stadium. The vibe is hot in Atlanta about the upcoming season, and the team is hoping to build off that excitement in 2010.

    Players Love the General Lifestyle...

With a new place to call home, many of the returning players for the Generals have spent much of this week getting familiar with the teams new facilities and equipment. All the players that we have talked to have raved about all the new state of art equipment that was brought in, as well as the upgraded turf that was installed in the teams new stadium. "This place is phenomenal" stated All-Pro John Maynard in a recent interview. So while all the current players loved playing as a member of the Fire, life as a General has proven to be a very sweet, rewarding experience so far.

    Retirements

The Georgia Generals took a big hit early in the off season when 4 players announced their retirement from the IFL. Lead by stud OT Winston Gribble the team also lost ILB/S John Hines, RB John Feliciano, and P Doug Piotrowski. There was some good news as All-Pro MLB John Maynard has decided to return for another season with the Generals. "We are always upset to lose players, especially ones that have been such key assets to our team. But it’s nice to know that we were able to keep John for another season. He is our anchor and we really need him right now." Stated Head Coach Marty Pearson after the retirements were announced by the league.

    New Coaches

With the turmoil of moving a team, the ownership staff also took some time out to bring in a new offensive and defensive coordinator for the 2010 season. Looking to add some new blood to the mix, as well as save some money, the team added former California Heroes head coach Eddie Morris as the teams OC and first time coach Kurt Franklin was added as the teams new DC. The team is hoping that the new staff will help right the ship and be a key piece to returning the Generals back to the playoffs soon.

    Minimal Changes in 2010

Despite the excess of 23 Million in the teams banks for free agency and the draft, many experts are not expecting much change in the Generals line up for 2010. The team will feature returning starters at nearly every position, with a few holes that need to be filled. It would not be a surprise to see a few big signings, but mostly the team will focus on its current roster and try to build on several key successes from last season.

Eddie Morris is your OC? I've got no game in front of me, but he used to be my HC too. From what I remember he's skills were in the area of injury prevention and defensive playcalling.

TRENT HAYDEN SIGNS ONE DAY CONTRACT - RETIRES

Former 1st round selection and Columbia/Georgia single season sack leader Trent Hayden signed a one day contract today so that he could retire as a member of the Fire/Generals. At Trent's request the press conference was held at the Columbia Fire's old Head Quarters and received a very strong turn out from fans and media. Hayden's career was cut short after season and eventually career ending knee injury in 2007.

        FIRE/GENERALS HOLD RETIREMENT PARTY

In celebration of the careers that several players have had, the Fire/Generals held a press conference/party for players that retired this offseason. Serveral former players like DE Trent Hayden, and T Stephen Rowden signed one day deals to join fellow teammate RB John Feliciano and retire with the Fire/Generals. The ceremonies were held at the Fire's old Head Quarters and each number was retired (In the Columbia Uniform).

                Georgia Generals 2010 Draft Review

Looking to continue the youth movement, the Generals front office geared up for the 2010 draft looking to fill a few key needs and to also add youth to aging areas of the teams roster.

                Pick 1.9 - Walter Fitzgerald - SS - UCLA
                Projection - Starting SS

SS has been a need position for the Generals for some time now and that need grew even larger when Veteran John Hines retired in the off-season. With that focus in mind the team zeroed in on Fitzgerald early in the pre-draft interviews and combines. The Generals love Fitzgeralds cover skills along with his ability to guard against the run. There are some concerns that all his abilites will be lost playing SS and there have been talks within the teams coaching ranks that Fitz may be better suited for FS or CB. But that remains to be seen if a move will actually take place.

Pick 3.12 - Claude Morris - RG - Texas Tech
                Projection - Starting RT

With no second round selection (Pick sent to Portland for Wes Goad) the Generals focused on addressing the growing need for youth on the offensive line. Morris brings a much needed shot of youth an talent to an aging line. Plans as of right not are for Morris to back up Ethan Lerner and Omar Fadler, but he could also slide to RT to help address a need there as well. Look for Morris to see plenty of playing time at both G and T this season.

                Pick 4.13 - Conrad Eastman - P - Fresno State
                Projection - Starting P

Addressing another need in the fourth the Generals looked to bolster their special teams with the addition of Eastman. Eastman will own the punting duties in 2010 and the Generals are hoping for a great return on their investment.

                Pick 5.11 - Sean Horner - G - Houston
                Projection - Backup G

Despite the selection of Morris in the 3rd round, the team felt it important to continue to the youth injection to the teams offensive line. Horner should fill in nicely as on of the teams backup guards in 2010, especially if Morris gets moved to RT as mentioned above.

                Pick 6.10 - Jorge Thomas - ILB - Purdue
                Projection - Special Teams

With the well known fact that John Maynard will not play forever, the Generals looked to bring in a player that could learn from the MLB legend as well as fill the needs in special teams. Thomas bring solid coverage skills and it tough against the run, but there are concerns about his tackling and the ability to read an opposing offense. Look for Thomas to fill the role as a special teamer this season and maybe develop over the next few seasons.

GEORGIA GENERALS INK ALL DRAFT PICKS

With only 5 picks in this years draft and nearly 22 Million available to spend it was not a surprise that the Generals had little issue working out deals with all five of their 2010 draft selections.

The team is currently trying to ink a few UFA prior to camp, but the team feels confident in their current roster and are hoping that with a great camp that they will be able to make a big splach in 2010.
