Atlanta Meet the Georgia Generals...
Now that the much anticipated move of the Columbia Fire to Atlanta has finally been completed, many in the organization shifted their focus on promoting the now Georgia Generals to their local fans. The team’s promotional department has started a local caravan tour with several players and representatives hitting local hot spots for autograph signings, season ticket selling drives, and to get the word out about the upcoming season. The team has also announced that there will be a Fan Fest this weekend to give their fans a chance to meet the players, coaches, and to show of the teams new 70000 seat domed stadium. The vibe is hot in Atlanta about the upcoming season, and the team is hoping to build off that excitement in 2010.
Players Love the General Lifestyle...
With a new place to call home, many of the returning players for the Generals have spent much of this week getting familiar with the teams new facilities and equipment. All the players that we have talked to have raved about all the new state of art equipment that was brought in, as well as the upgraded turf that was installed in the teams new stadium. "This place is phenomenal" stated All-Pro John Maynard in a recent interview. So while all the current players loved playing as a member of the Fire, life as a General has proven to be a very sweet, rewarding experience so far.
Retirements
The Georgia Generals took a big hit early in the off season when 4 players announced their retirement from the IFL. Lead by stud OT Winston Gribble the team also lost ILB/S John Hines, RB John Feliciano, and P Doug Piotrowski. There was some good news as All-Pro MLB John Maynard has decided to return for another season with the Generals. "We are always upset to lose players, especially ones that have been such key assets to our team. But it’s nice to know that we were able to keep John for another season. He is our anchor and we really need him right now." Stated Head Coach Marty Pearson after the retirements were announced by the league.
New Coaches
With the turmoil of moving a team, the ownership staff also took some time out to bring in a new offensive and defensive coordinator for the 2010 season. Looking to add some new blood to the mix, as well as save some money, the team added former California Heroes head coach Eddie Morris as the teams OC and first time coach Kurt Franklin was added as the teams new DC. The team is hoping that the new staff will help right the ship and be a key piece to returning the Generals back to the playoffs soon.
Minimal Changes in 2010
Despite the excess of 23 Million in the teams banks for free agency and the draft, many experts are not expecting much change in the Generals line up for 2010. The team will feature returning starters at nearly every position, with a few holes that need to be filled. It would not be a surprise to see a few big signings, but mostly the team will focus on its current roster and try to build on several key successes from last season.
