The 2009 offseason is underway and the Boston Dragons are preparing for something magical. Boston is one of only 6 IFL franchises yet to make it to the playoffs. However, a strong finish to 2008 led by J.B. Fogarty has the fans thinking it may be possible. "We have a great nucleus of young players and a group of veterans who want to get a taste of the postseason before they hang up their cleats", said a source close to the GM.

Offseason Begins - Coaching Moves

After 4 straight losing seasons and constant battles with GM David Gonzalez, Sammy Harvey has finally been let go from his head coaching duties. He is now the head coach of the Little Rock Toads. Gonzalez went to the college ranks to find a new head coach. Amos Harrigan has spent his last 6 seasons coaching at Pitt and he couldn't resist the 5 year deal he was offered to become to new coach of the Dragons. "I am very thankful for the Boston organization for allowing me to lead this team into the postseason. That is my goal and I hope the fans come out to see this entertaining team on Sunday's this fall," said Harrigan.

Gonzalez also added a new defensive coordinator to the coaching staff. Former IFL Bowl winner, Rich Ryan, signed a new 5 year deal to coach one of the most talented defensive units in the IFL.

Retirements/Free Agency

DT [ifl]Maximo Abshire[/ifl] has decided to leave the game of football after 15 long seasons. He ended his career with 269 tackles and 19.0 sacks. He was also honored as POTG 1 time during his career.

Unlike last season, we started free agency with a good amount of cap space, but it never hurts to ask if any of our players would like to renegotiate. This season we were able to move some contracts around.

WLB Andrew Valley was issued the franchise tag. He was then traded away to Louisiana for a 3rd Rd. pick in 2009 and 2010.
RB Tory Wigfall signed a renegotiated contract for $7.2M for 4 yrs.
G Judson Standley signed a renegotiated contract for $5.21M for 3 yrs.
FB Karl Santana signed a renegotiated contract for $2.78M for 3 yrs.
FS Quinn Surdyk signed a renegotiated contract for $4.83M for 4 yrs.

G Brian Guiterrez who spent one season with the Dragons was released.
CB Milton Martin who spent last season on the IR was also released.


With a solid core on defense, we once again tried to shore up our offensive line. Our #1 objective was to sign T Tranh Arrowood. We decided that it was time to part ways with T Bradley Click and go in a different direction. Arrowood and Laird give us a pair of very strong tackles who have the ability to knock defenders off the line.

We also added C Davis Higdon to backup and help mentor last season's 2nd Rd. pick Junior Huffman. He is also a nice insurance policy just in case anything were to happen to Huffman.

T Al Samuels agreed to return at least for the time being as a backup, but we are not sure if he will be around following cut day.

G Ted Griffin gives us some much needed depth at the guard position and he will contend for a starting spot on the offensive line.

Our other big signing was an unexpected one. although we worked out a deal with Wigfall, we still felt we needed another back who could make some plays. FB Casey Boehm looks to be that guy. We contended with about 4-5 other teams for his services and he liked the direction the Boston franchise was heading.

Of course there are always some guys that get away. DT Richard Johnson was one of those players. We wanted some veteran leadership along the defensive front line, but he decided to go to play for the VooDoo instead.

THE 2009 IFL DRAFT

Since taking over the franchise in late 2006, GM Gonzalez has shown he has a liking to draft defense especially in the early rounds. This year looked like it wouldn't be any different. The draft was top heavy with defense and even the experts were saying Boston would go with ILB Jon Hawkins. Of course, the draft is hard to predict because we had our eyes on 3 players: RB Roy Ramsey, QB Stephen Scott and T Karl Sanford and we ended up selecting...


1.10 (T) Karl Sanford - Nebraska - 6'6", 301 lbs. Sanford's combination of brute strength and agile feet were too much to pass up. Karl will likely be moved over to LT and play behind Antonio Laird who is currently in his 15th season.

2.10 (SILB) J.T. Rydzak - Notre Dame - 6'2", 248 lbs. We loved the size of this golden domer and he should start the season as the #2 guy behind Virgil McIver. He managed to make 97 tackles last season to go along with 3 sacks.

2.24 (WR) Preston Whiting - Notre Dame - 5'11", 202 lbs. We tried to move up in the second round earlier in the day as we had WR Cornell Catlett at the top of our board at that point. When he was selected at 2.15 and we saw Whiting falling we knew we could wait no longer. We packaged two 3rd Rd. picks to move up to select another golden domer. His 20 YPC should fill in nicely to this already deep wide receiving core.

3.9 (G) Rick Summers - Tulane - 6'4", 294 lbs. We were looking to go CB at this spot, but when Newman, Lawson and Wiggins all went off the board we decided to add some depth to our oft-criticized offensive line.

4.10 (FS) Trevor McCormick - UNLV - 6'2", 200 lbs. The 19 yo. McCormick is the youngest player in the IFL. He will have to beat out Leslie Harris to make the squad, but our scouts believe that he will be a better fit to our defensive scheme which should help him.

5.10 (TE) Casey Crawford - South Carolina - 6'1", 244 lbs. Crawford was the #3 TE on our board at this point in the draft. Krebs and Allred were drafted slightly before him, but we are not disappointed. He will be mentored by Brownell as he gets his feet wet in the IFL as our #3 TE.

6.10 (P) Bill Datillo - LSU - 5'10", 194 lbs. This is one of those picks where we actually got the guy we wanted without having to go with someone else. Alton Laliberte is entering his 19th season and we need someone to takeover next season. Datillo is that guy.

7.10 (CB) Joel Davidson - Texas A&M - 6'1", 187 lbs. Since we let Anthony Hill go to FA, Davidson stands a good chance to make the team as the #4 CB.

THE 2009 PRESEASON ROSTER

We were able to go into training camp with all our rookies signed which was a nice relief. Most of the starters look to have their spots already locked up, but we do have some good battles for a few backup positions.

A bunch of young guys will see a lot of snaps this preseason including 1st Rd. pick T Karl Sanford.


Quarterbacks

#5 J.B. "Magic" Fogarty (4th Yr. - Arkansas) - 6'1", 203 lbs. Fogarty earned the starting role late in 2008 and promptly led the team to 5 straight victories. 3 of those wins were games in which Boston trailed in the 4th quarter. J.B. is going to be the key to how well the Dragons do in 2009.

Career Stats: 7 GS, 143/242 (59.0%), 1509 yds, 10 TD, 7 INT, 78.9 QB Rating

#7 Jerald Burdette (5th Yr. - LSU) - 6'4", 219 lbs. Burdette was the starter last year, but he struggled mightily. He is now the #2 guy on the depth chart and we are still confident that he can make plays if he is called into action.

#17 Dana Mason (4th Yr. - Auburn) - 6'4", 213 lbs. Dana continues to be a slow learner and that has really hampered his growth in the IFL. He will once again be the #3 guy on the depth chart.

Running Backs

#34 Tory "Mack Truck" Wigfall (9th Yr. - Peru St.) - 6'1", 228 lbs. Tory had his worst season as a pro in 2008. Tory only managed to gain 3.42 YPC which is just not going to get it done. We did bring in Casey Boehm in the offseason to either push Wigfall or take over his job.

Career Stats: 91 GS, 1710 att, 6250 yds, 27 TD, 3.65 YPC, 241 REC, 1871 yds, 13 TD

#38 Tony Moriarty (3rd Yr. - Iowa) - 6'0", 212 lbs. Tony's second season in the league was much like his first as he gained 566 yds. on the ground. The main difference was that he only managed to get into the endzone twice.

#23 Ross Benson (5th Yr. - Miami) - 6'4", 229 lbs. Ross is our special team's captain and one of our gunner's who you will see flying down the field on kickoff and punt coverages.

#33 Cary Shivers (Rookie - Penn St.) - 5'11", 200 lbs. Cory was signed as an undrafted FA. He is simply not talented enough to make our team, but will stick around throughout the preseason in case of injuries.


Fullbacks

#44 Casey Boehm (7th Yr. - BYU) - 6'2", 243 lbs. Casey was one of our key FA acquistions this offseason. We are excited to see how Casey fits into our gameplan once the preseason gets underway. He had spent his entire career with Lansing up to this point.

#30 Karl Santana (10th Yr. - Texas A&M) - 6'1", 239 lbs. Karl had another solid year catching the ball out of the backfield as he hauled in 34 balls for 174 yards.

#25 J.J. Stevens (3rd Yr. - Florida St.) - 5'11", 218 lbs. J.J. did not see much again last year backing up Santana and now we are very leery on what the future may hold for the youngster out of FSU.

#48 Dale Compton (Rookie - Akron) - 6'0", 247 lbs. Dale is another guy we signed as an undrafted rookie. He is also a longshot to make the roster and will need to beat out Stevens for the #3 spot on the depth chart.

Wide Receivers

#80 Josh Sullivan (4th Yr. - Tennessee) - 5'11", 195 lbs. Josh continues to try and find his mark in the IFL. The highly touted WR from the SEC has yet to show the fans in Boston why he was drafted so high. After he went down last year with an injury to end his season, the fans started to turn on him. Signs of "Dump Josh" and "Stone Hands Sullivan" started to show up. Will this finally be the year Sullivan shines?

#86 Daryl Magallanes (7th Yr. - Utah) - 6'1", 197 lbs. Daryl led the team in receptions last season with 54. He also found the endzone 4 times. He will be our #3 WR this season once again, but if Sullivan struggles don't be surprised to see him get more starts.

#88 Brian Christie (8th Yr. - Kansas St.) - 5'10", 187 lbs. Brian had another solid season in 2008. He caught 51 passes and is the franchise record holder in nearly every receiving category.

#84 Rodny Sena (9th Yr. - Kentucky) - 6'1", 212 lbs. Rodney was resigned this offseason as an insurance policy and at this time we are still unsure whether he will make the final roster.

#89 Tyrus Strickland (2nd Yr. - Miami) - 6'2", 192 lbs. The man from "Da U" got some experience last season and will need a strong preseason in order to see action on Sundays.

#81 Preston Whiting (Rookie - Notre Dame) - 5'11", 202 lbs. Preston was a player who we traded up to get late in Rd. 2 of the IFL draft. At Notre Dame last season, Preston caught 15 passes for 304 yds. and 4 TD's. He will likely be our #4 WR on the depth chart.


Tight Ends

#85 Weldon Brownell (10th Yr. - San Diego St.) - 6'5". 250 lbs. Weldon had one of his best years in 2008. His 40 receptions was a career high and his 2 TD's matched a personal best. If our wideouts can make plays this season, look for Fogarty to find Brownell in the middle of the field for some big plays.

#87 Joshua Winstead (7th Yr. - Utah) - 6'3", 261 lbs. Joshua will once again backup Brownell this season and he remains a key member of our special teams unit.

#82 Casey Crawford (Rookie - South Carolina) - 6'1", 244 lbs. Casey was chosen in the 5th Rd and will look to learn from our experienced tight ends. He caught 33 passes for 558 yards and 2 TD's last year in college. Casey is not going to be known for his blocking ability, but his pass catching skills should keep him employed as well as his ability to long snap.

Centers

#77 Junior Huffman (2nd Yr. - South Carolina) - 6'6", 299 lbs. Junior is likely going to be the starter, but he will need to have a good performance in the preseason. Huffman also performs the long snapping duties for the special teams unit.

#59 David Higdon (9th Yr. - Mississippi St.) - 6'2", 306 lbs. David was brought in as a FA from Hartford to help the development of Huffman, but we are not counting out the possibility that he may win the starting job.

Guards

#74 Judson Standley (10th Yr. - Temple) - 6'3", 315 lbs. Judson did not see a lot of action last year and he has been moved from LG to RG this season. We will need a strong year for him to help move the ball on the ground.

#62 Riddick Hammond (4th Yr. - Georgia Tech) - 6'3", 296 lbs. Riddick had a good season in 2008 as he came off the bench and won a starting job at LG. He is penciled in the to start this year and we hope he continues to improve his performance.

#73 Ted Griffin (12th Yr. - Miami, Ohio) - 6'3", 347 lbs. Ted was another FA pickup along the offensive line. This will be his 4th team in his long career. He is looked up to as the leader along the O-Line and will be our #1 backup as we start the season.

#68 Rick Summers (Rookie - Tulane) - 6'4", 294 lbs. Rick was our 3rd Rd. pick and he did not shine in training camp. His spot on the final roster is in jeopardy.


Tackles

#60 Antonio Laird (15th Yr. - Miami) - 6'8", 307 lbs. Antonio is starting to slow down with his old age, but will likely remain our starter at LT to start the season.

#65 Thanh Arrowood (13th Yr. - Wake Forest) - 6'3", 332 lbs. Thanh was our biggest FA acquisition this offseason and will be our starting RT this season. He is the 2nd guy on our O-Line that has won the IFL's strongest man contest.

Career Stats: 80 GS, 182 KRB, 38.8% BPct, 22 SkA

#72 Al Samuels (7th Yr. - UNC) - 6'2", 297 lbs. Al was resigned to provide depth to our roster. Hopefully, we will not need him to see a lot of action, but he should be productive if called upon.

#75 Karl Sanford (Rookie - Nebraska) - 6'6", 301 lbs. Karl was the #10 overall pick in the 2009 IFL draft. He has good size and technique. He will see a lot of action in the preseason and will likely backup Laird and Arrowood with the possibility of starting later on in the year.

Kickers

#4 Carter Garland (8th Yr. - Western Michigan) - 6'0", 228 lbs. Carter is the Jekyll and Hyde of IFL kickers. He can be really good or he can be really bad. We hope he can repeat his performance from 2008 when he was named to the IFL 1st Team.

Career Stats: 96 GP, 146/189 FG, 53 LG

#16 Winfred Wells (Rookie - Hawaii) - 6'1", 215 lbs. Wells was an undrafted rookie who we picked up prior to training camp. We will give him a shot this preseason, but he will likely not make the team.


Punters

#3 Alton Laliberte (19th Yr. - Virginia Tech) - 6'3", 208 lbs. Alton is one of the oldest guys in the IFL, but he continues to be productive.

#6 Bill Datillo (Rookie - LSU) - 5'10", 194 lbs. Bill was chosen in the 6th Rd. and he will look to make the roster and learn from Laliberte who is likely to retire next season. Bill will get all the action in the preseason to try and impress the coaching staff.

Defensive Ends

#93 Fritz Gaddis (7th Yr. - Norther Illinois) - 6'2", 280 lbs. Fritz signed a nice long term deal last season and he will be a stalwart on the D-Line for the Dragons. 2008 was Gaddis' best in terms of sacks as he had a career high with 6. The switch to the 4-3 seemed to help out a lot and new defensive coordinator,. Rich Ryan, is excited to see what Gaddis can do in 2009.

#97 Malcolm Carmody (10th Yr. - Cincinnati) - 6'4", 260 lbs. Malcom saw a lot of action last season due to injuries to both Webb and Gaddis. He was able to be productive during his time on the field and he gives us some level of comfort in case we need to use him again.

#56 Raymond Webb (3rd Yr. - Georgia) - 5'11", 231 lbs. Raymond's season was cut short due to an injury. We hope the new 4-3 scheme will help him reach his full potential that most scouts had thought he would reach when he was the #2 overall pick in '07.

#95 Nick McDonald (6th Yr. - LSU) - 6'5", 273 lbs. Nick remains our #4 DE on the roster. He even set a career high with 2 sacks last season.

Defensive Tackles

#99 Earl "Mount" Hood (2nd Yr. - Ohio St.) - 6'2", 305 lbs. Earl IS the real deal. Even though he missed a bunch of games due to injury, when he was on the field it was hard to miss him. We expect to get a big contribution from Earl this year.

#96 Levon Joslyn (4th Yr. - Oregon St.) - 6'2", 286 lbs. Levon was a guy who never got a chance to show what he could do on the field. Then Hood got hurt and he was forced into action. He did such a good job that we decided to switch to a 4-3 scheme to get him on the field more.

#90 Chris Quarles (10th Yr. - Alabama) - 6'2", 320 lbs. With the retirement of Maximo Abshire, we needed someone to fill the backup role behind Hood and Joslyn. Quarles signed a one year FA deal in the offseason after spending last season in Pittsburgh.

#53 Virgil McIver (12th Yr. - Idaho) - 5'11", 240 lbs. Virgil silenced the critics last year as he totaled 105 tackles. He currently ranks 4th all-time in the IFL in tackles with 662.

#54 Andrew Hulse (11th Yr. - Boston College) - 6'0", 220 lbs. Andrew saw his playing time cut down significantly with the switch in defensive schemes. Andrew took the news in stride and he continues to play hard every time out on the field.

#52 Shawn Hinsley (6th Yr. - Oklahoma St.) - 6'1, 216 lbs. Shawn continues to toil on the bench behind the high caliber LB core the Dragons have on their roster. He could easily play for most teams in the IFL.

#55 Jonathan St. Louis (5th Yr. - West Virginia) - 5'11, 217 lbs. After a poor year in 2007, Jonathan was on a mission in 2008. He set career highs in tackles, passes defensed and forced fumbles. Not to mention his 6.5 sacks led the team and helped get him named to the 2nd Team All-IFL roster.

Career Stats: 61 GS, 259 TKL, 20.0 SCK, 0 INT, 7 FFum

#57 Matthew Stanley (7th Yr. - Tennessee) - 5'11", 220 lbs. Matthew is the main backup behind St. Louis, however he might get to see some action at WLB this season.

#50 Deron Tierney (3rd Yr. - Wisconsin) - 6'2", 235 lbs. Tierney is going to be in a battle with Weems and Stanley for the starting WLB position. He has only been on the field for 20 plays in his first two seasons with the Dragons.

#51 Neil Weems (2nd Yr. - Virginia) - 6'0", 212 lbs. Neil was drafted for this reason. We knew Andrew Valley would be leaving and we thought Weems would be his replacement. The spot will not be handed to him as he needs to show the coaching staff what he can do this preseason.

#58 J.T. Rydzak (Rookie - Notre Dame) - 5'11", 231 lbs. J.T. was drafted in the 2nd Rd this season. Last year at Notre Dame he totaled 97 tackles and also added 3 sacks. He will play behind McIver the next two seasons and then likely will become the man in the middle.

Cornerbacks

#21 Willie Ames (5th Yr. - Boston College) - 5'11", 191 lbs. All-World corner Willie Ames is looking to improve on his outstanding season last year. With 4 INT's and 24 passes defensed opposing QB's have only half the field to work with. Ames is in negotiations with the Boston front office to try and work out a long-term deal to keep him in Boston.

#26 Larry Morehead (9th Yr. - Indiana) - 6'1", 190 lbs. Larry may not get the headlines or the attention that Ames receives, but he is no slouch on the other side of the field. He set a career high last season with 17 passes defensed.

#24 Lawrence Currie (2nd - Texas A&M) - 5'10", 188 lbs. Other than Earl Hood, Lawrence was our most productive rookie on the roster last year. He is our starting nickel back and with his ability to make a tackle around the line of scrimmage it allows our defensive game plan to be very flexible.

#22 Joel Davidson (Rookie - Texas A&M) - 6'1", 187 lbs. Joel was our 7th Rd. pick he and he has an outside shot to make the roster.


Safeties

#41 Billy McBride (10th Yr. - North Carolina Central) - 5'10", 210 lbs. Billy had an awesome year in 2008. He set a career high in tackles (81) and tied a career best with 3 INT's including one that he returned for a TD.

#45 Dallas Perrone (12th Yr. - Maryland) - 6'2, 200 lbs. Dallas is the leader in the secondary and he is also our mentor to the young guys.

#28 Preston Paxson (2nd Yr. - UCLA) - 6'2", 197 lbs. Preston was another young player who showed some promise as a rookie. He is the primary backup to McBride and he is also his eventual replacement.

#27 Quinn Surdyk (3rd Yr. - Texas) - 6'3", 203 lbs. Quinn was able to beat our Leslie Harris for the starting FS spot last season. He played pretty solid and we hope he will continue to develop into this role.
