Los Angeles Matadors Turn to Veteran IFL Executive Ken Argot in Bid to Reverse Two Decades of Decline

LOS ANGELES — After 20 consecutive last-place finishes and more than two decades without a winning season, the Los Angeles Matadors of the Imperial Football League announced Friday the hiring of longtime IFL executive Ken Argot as the club’s new general manager, signaling what ownership called “a necessary and overdue reset” for one of the league’s most troubled franchises.

The Matadors, once a proud organization that last reached the postseason as a wild-card team in 2056, have become synonymous with instability, underperformance and dwindling support. The team plays in 70,000-seat Matador Stadium, built in 2011 and now widely considered the most outdated venue in the league. The field surface has deteriorated to the point where dirt outnumbers grass, weeds dominate the parking lots, and annual attendance has fallen to an average of just 29,500 — the lowest in the IFL.

Despite the team’s struggles, a small but loyal fan base continues to support the franchise. However, most residents in Los Angeles remain indifferent, and with the city’s population slowly shrinking, questions about the long-term viability of the club have intensified.

Argot, who has owned or operated multiple IFL teams over the past three decades, acknowledged his reputation for short tenures but insisted he is committed to a fresh start.

“I’ve removed myself from all other affiliations to concentrate on bringing a winning team to the IFL, whether it’s here, or somewhere else,” Argot said in a statement.

His comments followed a leaked email earlier Friday indicating that the mayor of Albuquerque had discussed potential stadium plans should Argot consider relocating the franchise. The revelation sparked immediate backlash from fans in several markets, including Miami, where Argot rebranded the franchise before departing after one season. Supporters in Colorado, Charlotte, Reno and Dakota — all cities where Argot previously held roles — expressed similar skepticism, citing a pattern of abrupt exits.

The Matadors’ on-field situation remains equally precarious. The team recently signed the aging 17-year-veteran Pro Bowl Quarterback Micah Bergman away from the Tequila Worms in free agency, but the roster still lacks depth and balance. The team lost 5 major players to retirement and released their top Wide Reciever for cap considerations without a trade. Despite several solid drafts in recent years, the club has no tight ends under contract as training camp approaches, and the front office has fielded multiple inquiries about trading offensive linemen. Team officials privately acknowledge that morale inside the locker room has eroded after years of sustained losing.

Still, Argot said he believes the franchise can be rebuilt.

“This organization has nowhere to go but up,” he said. “The work starts now.” Los Angeles' new head coach Cepeda broke the cycle of losing seasons going 8-8 last year, which may cause some to wonder if there may be something to his leadership. Together with GM Ken Argot, fans can only hold out hope, or place a final nail in the Matadors coffin.

Whether that work takes place in Los Angeles — or in another city — remains an open question. For now, the Matadors hope Argot’s arrival marks the beginning of a long-awaited turnaround.
