  • 2076: A season in too many numbers. Part III: REALLY too many numbers

OK so this post is really some sicko stuff and probably not for everyone, as I continue to play around with new ways of analyzing the games. I'm attaching some numbers numbers numbers to this post rather than posting visuals, so feel free to grab the text file and dig in. What we have here is the long tail of looking at team level EPA and combining with some other metrics, in particular success rates.

What people might find interesting is the section 11: a 1-32 ranking for all the teams based on a weighted approach to assessing their offense and defense. That's also shown at the end of this post. Then, in section 12, there is an efficiency 'report' for every team. All just a first stab at extending the analytics coverage for those who are interested. Caveat: I'm constantly tweaking things and calculation errors are quite possible here and there, so posted in good faith only. No liability for future actions, etc. etc.

Rankings tracks well with the season results. Top 12 teams all made the playoffs except Alaska (10) who saw their place usurped by Dakota (14). Teams 26-32 all sit on the top draft picks next year. Only Boston might mess with that, depending on tie-breakers
