  • This Game, This Effing Game

So i started in 1960 with the Eagles in a SP career, had a nice run and then moved on to the lowly Bears, rebuilt and reshaped them into a contender, going to the playoffs 5 times and SB once, were we lost. Anyhoo, i get into this game in the playoffs against the Bucs.

Down 10-0 we hit a FG with 9 minutes left and then do this. I had taken over playcalling at this point.

1-10-CHI40 (4Q: 01:51) Doug Flutie pass fell incomplete, intended for WR Michael Irvin. OLB Mike Croel hurried the quarterback into a bad throw. The quarterback threw away from the double coverage.

    (4Q: 01:38) Chicago called a time out.
3-12-CHI38 (4Q: 01:38) Doug Flutie pass was dropped by WR Nate Lewis. PENALTY: Chicago was called for Illegal Use of the Hands. The penalty was declined.
4-12-CHI38 (4Q: 01:30) Doug Flutie scrambled for 15 yards. Tackled by S Alvin Walton.
1-10-TBY47 (4Q: 01:24) Doug Flutie spiked the ball to stop the clock.

1-10-TBY20 (4Q: 00:32) Doug Flutie scrambled for 11 yards. Tackled by CB Terrance Shaw.
    (4Q: 00:22) Chicago called a time out.
1-9-TBY09 (4Q: 00:22) Doug Flutie pass fell incomplete, intended for WR Sterling Sharpe. S Gene Atkins defended the pass. The quarterback threw into double coverage. PENALTY: Tampa Bay was called for Illegal Contact.
1-5-TBY05 (4Q: 00:13) Doug Flutie pass completed to WR Michael Irvin for 5 yards and a TOUCHDOWN! The quarterback threw away from the double coverage. Tampa Bay 10, Chicago 9
(4Q: 00:13) Doug Flutie passed to Sterling Sharpe for the successful two-point conversion. Chicago 11, Tampa Bay 10
(4Q: 00:06) Todd Peterson kicked off 63 yards from the CHI30. John Taylor returned the ball 19 yards to the TBY26. Tackled by Merton Hanks.
1-10-TBY26 (4Q: 00:01) Jim Everett pass completed to RB James Stewart for 30 yards. The receiver went out of bounds. Tackled by S Harry Hamilton. Stewart gained 24 yards after the catch. The quarterback threw away from the double coverage.
Final Score: Chicago Bears 11, Tampa Bay Bucaneers 10

I was so elated i jumped around and mimiced what a coach would be like on the sidelines. So happy. Lost the super bowl, didn't care, this win was such a rush. Now, fast forward about 7 years later.

I have it at Pitts 23 with 2 minutes left, im up by 4.

Official time out for the two-minute warning.
1-10-PIT22 (4Q: 01:53) Todd Marinovich dropped to one knee for -1 yards.
    (4Q: 01:44) Pittsburgh called a time out.
2-11-PIT23 (4Q: 01:44) Todd Marinovich dropped to one knee for -2 yards.
3-13-PIT25 (4Q: 01:34) Todd Marinovich dropped to one knee for -1 yards.
4-14-PIT26 (4Q: 00:48) Todd Marinovich dropped to one knee for -1 yards. The ball goes over on downs.
1-10-PIT27 (4Q: 00:04) Steve McNair pass completed to WR Chad Johnson for 73 yards and a TOUCHDOWN! Johnson gained 36 yards after the catch. Pittsburgh 26, Chicago 24
(4Q: 00:04) Extra point by Jose Cortez was good. Pittsburgh 27, Chicago 24

Didn't wanna risk the block. What are the odds that they'll go 75 yards in 1 play? :shithappens:

Probably greater then having a block kicked. How many blocked kicks were against you all year?

If you kick that field goal and then kick off they would have had to have returned the kick for a TD just to tie you.

Still a pretty improbable way to lose a Super Bowl. That is a bummer.

I'd take Sui's odds on this one. The calculations wouldn't be based on plays per year but plays per opportunity. I think a higher percentage of FGs will be blocked per FG attempt than results of 75 or more yards will be seen per offensive play.

It'd be cool if FOF could sim the situation many thousands of times over and spit out the results.

lol. Want a sample size of 2 that is effin frustrating?

Same situation, 2 years later, same exact scenario except it's the nfc title game and theres 1 minute on the clock. What do i do this time? Attempt the FG. What happens? Blocked. Luckily we stopped them but damn, just damn.
