  • New job blooooooooooooooooooog.

So, my new job hasn't started yet. That about sums it up right now.

I haven't said much about it because there hasn't been anything to really say. Talked to my new bosses today though and things are finally moving forward. It has gone a lot slower then I had hoped, but for some reason the owner HAD to talk to me before things could continue, and that took him several weeks for some reason.

Anyways, the job is mine if I choose to take it. I have a couple reasons now to back out, but nothing is perfect and I think in the long run these things may not be a big deal. I will get my official 'job offer' mailed to me this week. I sooooo do not understand why that is done, why can't they just tell me over the phone what they say in the letter? I know some more corporate type jobs/companies do that though so whatever....

I will be starting the first week of November or so. Two tours go out Nov. 11th (or maybe it was the 12th), and I will be driving for one of those. I will be heading up roughly a week early though so I can start to learn what I need to learn. The cool thing is that one of the tours is an all Texas tour and I was told I would probably be put on that one. Should help the wife and kid adjust, they will be able to drive up and see me once or twice. And hopefully I am somewhat close on Thanksgiving.

One pretty cool thing I found out today from the owner....They are talking about starting a Motocross racing team with BestBuy, and we would drive the trucks for those. That would kick ass.

SO I finally got some info I have been waiting for.....cost of benefits.

        Not so good.

I expected higher costs because it is a smaller company. But I didn't expect this much. Almost triple what I pay now (although that includes 401k which I don't have now, all I have now is the Emerson Pension Plan).

Here's my thing, I was already taking an initial pay cut to take this job. It is salary so that was a plus though, and the long term pay should better along with much more advancement possibilities.

Now though, I am looking at possibly even less pay because the insurance will cost so much more. This is crunch time. I guess I am in a bit of a scramble mode now to see if we can find our own insurance plan at a lesser cost. This insurance this company is giving is VERY good, better then what I have now and so I guess that is part of why it will cost me more. So if I can find one that is about the same coverage as what I have that may save the day for me. If not, I have a tough choice ahead in the next few days or week.

My start date is now officially set for November 6th. I get my drug screen overnited Thursday, so it is here when I get home and I can go drop it off on Monday.

The wife is being very supportive, which is nice. I was ready to tell them I couldn't do it tomorrow but she has kind of given me hope that we could probably work with it.

Mother fuckers should have given me this info a month ago when I asked for it. For some reason they just had to stick with their order of doing things. :x

As for the rest of the info I got today I am happy with. Got details on things I have heard about, such as they reimburse all meals while on the road and I was figuring the hotel rooms they put us up in would be two guys per room, but they give us our rooms so that is nice.

Anyways, I take off here in a hour or so. I am sure I will pass off more info when I get home. SHould have a lot happen this week on the road as I try to sleep during the day but probably won't very much.

          just tossing this out there.

Sounds like this new job offer is rather "unique"

Long haul trucking jobs are not "unique" are they?

If it is possibly to leave your current job on good terms they would probably always have a position for you in the future wouldn't they? Them or some similar trucking company.

          Just my thoughts. Good Luck.

Unique indeed. Rare even. I am not even sure there of any other company who does this kind of thing, though there are some who may do things close to it.

And no, Over The Road jobs are a dime a dozen, and with a national driver shortage of about 20,000 drivers I could get a job with just about any company in a week. I will be leaving Emerson in good standing, and if things don't work out here then they will be the first company I think of.

So, this leads me to what is going on. I tried to ask for more money to help with the insurance but like a first round draft pick they wouldn't give in to my demands. After hearing some solid arguements from them I guess, and some looking into getting our own insurance coverage another way, I have taken the job and am now 100% committed to it as of Friday. I had already signed their offer sheet before that, but I could have backed out. No backing out now.

Two weeks left with Emerson. Kind of weird. I have been here 7 and 1/2 years, since before my daughter was born. I kind of look at it as the only job I have had in my 'adult' life.

It's a pretty big risk in some ways. I am betting on advancing, and advancing somewhat fast. I will also need to do everything I can to get my bonuses, which I need to equal my current pay. My base salary alone is actually a pay cut for me, but that isn't too bad considering it is starting pay with this company and they don't have a cap on how high I can go. With Emerson I could stick around another 10 years, be doing the same job, and hoping every other year that they raise the top pay by another 1/2 cent per mile.

            Two weeks.

Just got back from taking my DOT drug test. 8 years of taking 1-2 random tests a year and I have never had a problem. Go in, pee, get out.

Not this time. I didn't piss enough. So I had to sit, drink water, and wait. An hour later I piss almost too much.

And of all the things I have been through before, I for some reason found talking about the fact that I couldn't piss enough to a fairly hot chick (the nurse or whatever she was) was embarrassing to me. ops:

Sorry. Although it is something the whole family could do together. I love seeing the carny workers who have their kids playing down on the ground of their ping-pong ball toss booth.

You may have a point. Although chances are I won't ride with MacroGuru much.

I do get hotel rooms with choice a. With choice b I get a camper on the back of a pickup at best.

Of course b also lets me go without washing clothes for a much longer period of time and that is pretty attractive.

Doh! SO much for an all Texas tour my first time out.

I meant to call my new boss all week to ask him if I was going to get that tour or not and tell him I would like it, but I waited too long. He called me up Thursday evening to ask what my local airport was to arrange the flights in and out, and he mentions I will be flying home from Las Vegas.

I am a bit disappointed since the wife and kid won't be able to come up and see me at some point. Still, kind of excited about the tour anyways.

After 2 weeks in Arkansas learning shit, I will take off and head to Albuquerque for the first tour stop. Then make our way over to Flagstaff (with a few stops in between), from there down to a couple Pheonix suburbs, down to the AZ/CA/Mexico border for Yuma, then into CA and San Diego. From San Diego up to a town between there and LA, then a couple far out LA 'burbs, then a stop in the desert before heading to Vegas.

Except for the Flagstaff part, there is no question of any bad weather so that's cool. Plus a couple nights in Vegas could be cool if I get a chance to do anything.

1 week and 1 day until the new job, only 3 days of work with Emerson left.
