no, haven't heard of Glassjaw but now i'm gonna Google them.

i have this thing about me where i have to be in the know about everything. i hate sub-cultures and eliticism - i want to know what's going on everywhere and know all the pop culture phenomena (sp?). when i was watching TBS and all the high school/early college age teens were knowing all the songs and i was reluctantly being included in the mosh pits (my best friend and i were really close to the stage) i was like "how was i missing out on this all this time?". the lead singer Adam was like "thanks to all you who'd come see us at our shows around here" and started naming some area clubs and everyone was shouting and i was like "all this time this band was right underneath my nose and i didn't know about it".

even AFI - i read an article about them in Rolling Stone that they've been around for a while. they're from the industrial era of music and have changed their sound a couple times. apparently they have a big following. seriously, listen to the verses of Miss Murder and tell me that's not new wave!

about the only culture i have no interest in knowing about are those gothic wannabe vampires who go to goth clubs dressed as the Phantom of the Opera. those people give me pause.

I don't know if you'll like them, but who knows. The lead singer screams quite a bit and it's pretty hardcore stuff at times. Really just wondered if you'd heard of them.

Probably one of my Top 5 favorite bands though (along with The Mars Volta ).

          uuuuuuuugh!!!! not TMV!!!

i got a TMV as an office gift from my last job and i was all excited to hear it cuz my favorite guitrarist John Frusciante of RHCP played on there and i listened to it and i was like "huh???". listened to it twice and that was about it.

if that glassjaw screams they probably sound like Hawthorne Heights. there's one singer on there who screams like he's in death metal meanwhile the music is otherwise emo/rock.

i think i like Emo cuz i know the younger generation is all about it and i'm at that age (28 ) where if i don't keep my ear to the ground and be in touch with the music the next gen is listening to i can easily start liking Hootie or The Fray or some 'adult-contemperary" nonsense. Coldplay is one of my top 5 bands so i don't know what that makes me.

            In steps I.

AFI, and crap like that....not real emo. Calling that emo is like calling New Found Glory punk. Actually, calling AFI emo is like calling AFI punk, which was once done because they kind of fit that 90's mold of punk. THis was back in the day Green Day and Rancid became 'the face' of punk, atleast according to MTV. AFI was 'unknown' then though.

AFI is basically a commercial pop-rock band, who now dresses the way 14 year old girls will go crazy for. Although I will take them over that piece of crap My Chemical Romance any day.

But, I am an elitist, or so I have been called.

I am not a huge emo guy, but have gotten into some emo bands over the years. Fugazi is probably my all-time favorite, although they are not really emo themselves, but credited with influencing the second wave of emo. Husker Du has some decent stuff. A more recent band, Hot Water Music is pretty damn good.

A band called Jawbreaker (one of my all-time favorite bands in any genre) is also considered emo. They were part of emo hitting the west coast and blending with 'pop-punk'. Jawbreaker, as a lot of emo bands, was short lived. But fuck they were good. Jawbreaker can also be called punk though, one reason I hate genre's, they can blend fairly easy...example.....

Thrice, Glassjaw, and shit like that, are thrown into the sub-genre of screamo these days. Well, 15 years ago screamo was different then these bands. These bands are more like plain old emo was back 15 years ago.

But yeah, emo as is punk, is filled with 5000 sub-genre's and they all start to fucking blend and morph over time that the shit can get pretty annoying.

Anyways, emo like it is thrown out on MTV and radio, blah. Some bands have some decent songs once in a while but I can't stand most of it. Coheed and Cambria is a decent one to me. Saves The Day has had a couple ok songs. Thrice used to be good, when they were more straight up punk, hardcore.

wow...rather informative. i guess you truckers would know a ton about music since i'm sure you listen to it on your 17 hour drives. i had you pegged as a southern rock type of guy, or even a retro metal guy into 80's metalica and husker du.

Haha. No, I am not a normal trucker. I was into punk early on, and it has stuck.

And what I gave you is just a fraction of 'history' or a breakdown of this crap. My knowledge is a joke compared to those who really get into it. I have looked into a little bit, to try and get a clear picture of 'the scene', but pretty much a just listen to what I hear and like.

I do branch out. I like reggae, some classic rock, always liked Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and on and on. Mostly punk, ska, and the things in between.

Yeah i like ska too. In a way I really ot into them at the same time because of the same band. Already knowing several punk bands I had not been a huge fan yet (I was around 12-13). Then I get exposed to a record label called Lookout Records. This is the label Green Day started on back when one could make an arguement for them being punk. Anyways, on of the many great (IMO) bands on this indy label at he time was a band called Operation Ivy. They are kind of a mix of punk and ska. Two of these guys went on to form Rancid, which has ska elements to it too, and the lead singer Jesse disappeared for a while, then came back with Common Rider, a great ska-ish band that doesn't really fit a category IMO.

Anyways, OpIvy got me looking into normal ska much more after that. That also led me to reggae since that is pretty much were it started.

Fuck, I am yapping too much about this stuff.

just because I feel like butting in.. and this has nothing to do with punk nor ska.. but has the group Arctic Monkeys hit it off in the States at all? It's a british band, from Sheffield.. they're current getting all my car-time riding to and from work and have been for the past month or so.

Yeah, they are getting a good amount of play I think. I know for sure they get play on Sirius Satellite radio, on a couple channels.

They kind of annoyed me at first, just because everyone came on Sirius acting like they discovered the band and were introducing them to the U.S.

I can't say any of their songs stick out. I keep confusng them with The Zambonis because of their Hockey Monkey song, or with Snow Patrol. It's the snow and monkey thing I guess. :P

Haha, yeah, I actually had some trouble getting into them at first.. they were too.. hmm.. what would be a good translation.. noisy is wrong, but anyway.. after about 10 listenings, they got me going and now I have to listen to them every time I'm in the car.

I don't mind their sound really, it was just the way everyone kept acting how they personally went to England, saw them in a small club, and were now coming back to the U.S. to enlighten the rest of us. It made me want to ignore them just out of spite. I'm retarded that way sometimes....
