      Norfolk, Press Release

The NORFOLK VIPERS announced that they will introduce their HALL OF FAME inductee, HAROLD “FINGER” LOZIER to the home fans at this Sunday’s game that features the 9-1 Lawrence Phantoms.

Opening the press conference, Viper GM r00k said, “At the start of the season, we gave Finger the opportunity to select the game for his coming-back party to Norfolk fans. He looked at the home schedule and quickly pointed to the Lawrence game. I think during the course of this press conference, you will understand why. The two times Imperial Bowl MVP had some memorable games against the Phantoms but none as memorable as the double overtime loss to the Phantoms in Imperial Bowl IX.”

Lozier, who also attended the press conference, is first IFL QB to be inducted into its Hall of Fame and he was voted in by the highest vote count in IFL history and in the very first year of his candidacy – at 86%.

Lozier commented, “I have never owned and will never be a candidate for an all-time QB statistical honor. So with that said, I find this quite an honor to be honored by my peers and for just being that “everyday Joe” behind center.”

Jostling Lozier to the side, r00k took the microphone, “What Harold did not say is that he epitomizes the perfect team player. In his twelve year career, all in Norfolk, he
      • Played in four Imperial Bowls. The Vipers won two championships. (Three of those appearances were consecutive appearances.)
      • He led the Vipers to six AFC Conference Championships games. Again, five of those appearances were in consecutive years. That may never happen again.
      • Of his twelve seasons, there were only three seasons that the Vipers did not participate in the playoffs (missing on his first two seasons and again in his eleventh year).
      • He leads all quarterbacks with 100 games under their belt in winning percentage … 136-62 – 68.6%. It is very probably that this record may be like Babe Ruth’s HR record, a record to stand for the ages.
Let’s open it up for some questions.”

One reporter asked Lozier, “Where did the nickname “Finger” come from.”

Lozier, a little red in the face, came to the podium and answered, “Well my first coach, Howie Mooberry, who I think will also be in the Hall of Fame one day, gave it to me in my second season. To tell the story correctly … I did not make the greatest grades in college at Idaho. In fact, my Solecistic IFL intelligence rating never climbed higher than one digit. This being said, the Viper playbook was quite a challenge for me to digest. After the first season, Coach Mooberry knew he had to make an adjustment and much to his frustration. He also remembered that I was a baseball pitcher at Idaho. So, he told me that he was going to greatly simplify the playbook, and just for me. First, he developed a basic set of run plays and another set of passing plays. And second, during games, he would call the plays from the sidelines by holding up one finger for a pass play and two fingers for a run play. There were a lot of “two fingers”! My team mates could hear the excitement in the huddle when only that ONE finger was in the air on the side line. Thus the nickname, “Finger”. It has stuck ever since. Granted, our system got a little more sophisticated as time evolved but I can honestly say that the finger system was used for at least four seasons.”

Another question was directed to Lozier from a reporter: “Mooberry coached you for eight years and then current Lawrence head coach, Tyrell Nichols was your coach. What was your relationship with these two coaches?”

“Honestly, both were really very similar. Coach Mooberry developed the Viper system. Much like Vince Lombardi … team first, team first … and that is probably why you do not see many IFL records coming from too many individual Vipers. Coach Nichols embraced that foundation but was a bit more of a tactician. Before coming to Norfolk, he had won a championship in St. Louis. He led us to a Bowl game … YES, that one vs Lawrence where we lost in double OT. That game was incredible. As you know, he is now the head coach of Lawrence and has also taken them to an Imperial Bowl. I am very much looking forward to seeing him again at the game. This is one of the reasons I chose the Lawrence game for this occasion.”

R00k indicated there was only time for one last question.

“What is your relationship with the current QB Cavazos and who is going to win on Sunday?”

“Jon and I have a great relationship. I think I helped a bit transition from his “all-world season” at Pennsylvania and the system of that team to the very different system in Norfolk. At Pennsylvania he threw for 47 TDs and only had 12 ints. Norfolk offense is much more balanced and that was a difficult adjustment for Jon. He was the man in Pennsylvania and they won or lost on his arm and they won a lot. Jon’s first year as a Viper resulted in 12 TDs and 21 ints. It was a difficult year and he was very discouraged and was questioning his move to Norfolk”

“In the off season, Offensive Coordinator Cicci asked me if I could try to help Jon out mentally. Hell, there wasn’t anything I could teach him physically. First of all he is a great guy and we are very close friends. I can say without reservation that he now understands the role of the QB position at Norfolk and he has embraced that. I think you see him in this leadership role and he relishes the challenge to set the tone for each and every game. Look at his win-loss record … 60 wins, 19 losses. Damn, he’s gunning for my record and I hope he adds another notch on Sunday.

“I know I have Jon beat in one category … his intelligence rating in Solecistic is flat line zero. I really can’t laugh because mine wasn’t too much higher. But you know, the thing about that rating … no one needed to teach either of us how to win. Jon has promised me to revenge a certain other game!”

big game against Chi town. Hoping that we can pull one out on the road. For all the years they underachieved, this team is over achieving. Going to be a good test for the Bulldogs

Matt, ... thanks a bunch for the nice words ...

I wanted to preserve some IFL history when I saw that he was elected at the beginning of the season. So, I wrote this article early in the season and filed it away. When I saw the Lawrence matchup on the schedule, I immediately said that was the fitting setting to introduce the first QB in the IFL Hall of Fame. The current records of the two teams is just lagniappe for the event.

In retrospect, it would have been easier to write about Lozier's game against Oakland in Imperial Bowl IV but they were not on the schedule. So Lawrence it is.

Now if Cavazos can just turn a trick on Sunday.

                  The I-44 Bowl this weekend.

St Louis pays a visit. They seem up and down this season. Hope they are down for this one.

Important and rare IWC/VAN matchup this week.

I hate to call this a big game 'cause we haven't had a good track record in big games recently. But it'll be pretty much impossible to win the division if we fall 2 games behind OAK (really 3 counting the tie-breaker). Going to be tough to stop IWC's offense.

I wonder if LRK can pull off a miracle this week.

HUGE game for us this week. Although, with Murf and Anc 7-3 as my closest chance to make it in, pretty much every game is going to be huge until week 17.... unless I lose tomorrow then my season is over.

definetely going to be an interesting game. Star RB Ozguner is coming back from his injury and will be looking to continue where he left off.

                        Good luck Mark

Ya just HAD to bring that up didn't ya? Not nuff salt in the wound, gotta reopen that scar

HUGE game against IFL champs. Going to need every ounce of luck and the best game of the year from my squad to pull this one off. Perkins may be out but I'm not sleeping on that. Good teams find ways to win REGARDLESS.
The claws are still one of the most dangerous teams in the league. We HAVE to win to keep pace for the division lead. I'm scared to death of this one. Lose this and we may not have time to recover and be fighting for the wildcard scraps watching the Whales run off with the division.
