  • How we got here.

Aha! I found the God awful trade that has us floundering this year as we enter the draft.

We traded up to 1.14 and took QB, Bryan McNeil despite having Dennis Collela signed to a 3-year multi-million dollar deal.

What did we give up? We gave up 2.6 last year (Oakland ended up finally with this pick through Lawrence and Portland to land WR David Thomason) We could really use a WR like Thomason but we also gave up a premier top 5 pick this year. Actually the second overall pick in the draft and 2.3 this year.

We would have had two first round picks this year....we currently pick 1.26.

I think I'm going to throw up.

Something to think about before you just start trading draft picks in future years around.

Keep in mind I definitely hit the jackpot on this trade after the fact. At the time it was made Chris Andrews was still on the board and had my eye at #14. No one knew at the time that the future 1st and 2nd would be so high. As it is the difference between picking #2 and #5 was a tie breaker. I luckily parlayed a very bad season by Reno along with luck of the draw tie breaking.

Had Reno made the playoffs last season I'd be wishing I'd taken Andrews.

I dont give future firsts away anymore. In another league I gave up a future first only to have it be the number 1 pick the season it came due. I just don't think one player can be worth what that future first can mean.

The key is to do it when that player's addition will change the pick from a high one to a low one therefore decreasing the value of the given 1st at the moment the trade is made.

When we think our teams are better than they are or too many injuries hit is when we get into trouble.

You're welcome. Andrews is great, no doubt, but I'm not an offensive guy so I wouldn't want to pay two highly rated WRs. He fits in with Tulsa better than he would've with us.

I'm now focused on squeezing 10 lb's of defense into a 5 lb roster.

that was my entire point in the LAN/GEO trade thread. yeah, its nice that you may wanna go for it all, but trading 1st roundres for 10th year veteran WRs is just a recipe for future disaster. there's a lot of trading of 1st round picks in this league. 1st rounders are so devalued. macroguru should go down as one of the worst IFL GM's ever. i made fun of him for his Colella signing. his team wasn't at the point that it made sense to invest such a huge contract in a guy like Colella. i told him he didn't have the WR's to make use of Colella and that by the time he was able to surround Colella with good enough WR's Colella would be in the last year of his deal. that was a horrible contract to give.

maybe we should make a rule, you need to be in the league at least 2 seasons before you can be allowed to trade 1st rounders in future years. at least show you're gonna stick around.

exactly. i don't know how this team will perform 2 years from now. but if its 2016 and we're 2-8, it doesn't make sense for me to continue trying to win games at the point so at that point every win hurts me since if i'm not going to the playoffs then i might as well shoot for a good pick. that first round pick is the only redeeming thing for a horrible season. without that then the season was a total and complete failure. even fans will excuse a bad season cuz then they get the get excited over having a high pick and the team will land an impact player. add no first round pick to show for a bad season and the fans would be calling for your head.

Though not setting any records right now Reno did get the 8th highest potential OVR for a QB under 10 seasons in the IFL with that pick. QBs need time to develop. Reno used their pick at #3 on a stud RB and then as a potentially great QB slipped they made a move to get back in the draft and take a shot.

Again these things are easy to judge in hindsight but if Reno jumps in and takes the QB at #14 and "hits" he could've went to the playoffs in a down year for the NC West and left me with a pick in the low 20's.

I think this is too strict specifically but I like the spirit of the rule.

However we DO have a rule against tanking, which is doing anything less than your honest best to win every game, that you've shown NO respect for since you've entered the league. Seriously, everyone knows that you're a tanker and that nothing's being done to discourage it. Out of respect for the rest of us you could keep it inside or at least wait until tanking season to wave your flag.

i don't tank. tankers intentionally try to lose and try to do shady things to encourage losing. if i didn't mention to the public that i was rooting for high picks and was hoping i would lose no one would notice anything cuz i don't do anything that undermine my team's competitiveness. submitting a gameplan where you run 100% of the time, even when behind, is tanking. letting Rex set your defense gameplan and using the same base offense every week and not scouting your team isn't tanking. in fact, there's no proof that doing that won't result in wins. we all know the AI will disregard your gameplan when it thinks its appropriate to do so, there's no proof that spending an hour on gameplans instead of 5 minutes on your team gives you a world of advantage. i've always said there's a lot about this game that simply gives the appearance that you're controlling it. when you submit a gameplan and you win you assume you won cuz of your gameplan cuz you submitted one. that's like saying when you get on an airplane and you don't crash it's because you said your prayers. HAHAHA. it didn't hurt your odds, but most likely it wasn't a factor at all. that's gameplanning in FOF.

anyway, lets not try to insinuate i'm a tanker. you wouldn't think that unless i was being brutally honest with my team's intentions. there's a difference between tanking and simply not doing a whole bunch of trades or FA signings just to run in circles for a season. i've made no lopsided trades, and every trade i've made since announcing 2 seasons ago i was rooting for a top pick has been an even steven fair deal. people who tank bench their top players and trade away their best players for pennies on the dollar.
