  • Draft Rules Discussion

Wanted to open up some discussion on next years draft and the rules we'll be using going forward.

My personal opinion is that the first 2 rounds can be reduced but i'd rather not cut them too dramaticly. Right now i'm thinking something along the lines of 4,4,3,3,2,2,1.

The draft utility also has a nice feature that will allow penalties to be enforced for missed picks. I'm thinking for each pick missed your time is reduced by 50%.

I'd like to get your opinions on these ideas.
    I luv British womenz.

For me, 4 hours is still too long. We use 2-2-1-1-1-1-1 in the NAFL and it's going smoothly. I'm not saying that we should do that here, but I think 3 hours is plenty in the first and second so I would say 3-3-2-2-1-1-1.

As for the penalty of missing a pick, take away 50% of his time is nice. It can happen to anybody but you'll only have make it faster for the rest of the draft.

I would also say that if you miss 3 picks in a draft, you should be on autopick for the remainder of the draft.

The thing is, with this league especially, we arn't a face paced league and I dont think i'd wanna make changes that extreme for the early rounds especially, not right away at least.
      I luv British womenz.

          My personal favorite...

Is to set time slots for each team... So instead of saying you have two hours or so to pick, and the draft flies...

With dedicated slots we can set up the draft however we want hour wise.

          For Example..

We start the draft at 8am EST and ends at 10pm EST. Georgia picks 3rd and STL picks 15th... And we have say 2 hours to draft per pick... So Georgia would need to have there pick in by 2pm EST, and STL would not be due until 10AM EST on the 3rd day (I think that would be the break down lol).

This set up allows each owner to know when they select and that there pick has to be in at a certain time. But this also allows us to reduce the hours per pick and still keep all the owners in the know on when they have to get it in by...

Pros - Reduce time between picks, lets each owner when they pick, less of a chance that owners picks will come and go if they are unable to check the draft regularly... And to avoid major issues, we could set the next rounds time slots as each round completes.

Cons - There would still be larger windows if the draft goes faster then expected and one owner is not available.

I do agree in draft penelties... And I agree that there needs to be a major slash in times if we stay with our current set up... I agree with 3 hours there.

I also believe that if your setting up a list that we should limit the amount of time you can set up the delay... I mean an hour is cool if you want to jump back in before your time is up, but setting it up for half or 3/4 of your slot kinda defeats the purpose of creating a list IMO..

I think a team that misses a pick should have to wait until the end of the round for the pick to be made for them.

I like those time slots a lot better than ours, but would push to bring the 5th round down to 30 mins and the 6th and 7th to 15 mins.

If we continue to have such high time slots then I vote for a day's break at some point (after round 2?) in the draft for those of us who run almost the entire marathon and sit at the screen refreshing over and over while picks aren't being made.

While discussing penalties for missed picks don't forget the situation where a team will pick multiple times quickly. Say a team has picks 1.2, 1.3, and 1.5 and gets caught up for the day with an emergency. If the penalties grow each pick then this person would be penalized three times for the same, albeit long, missed time window.

That is why I like the time slot idea. But I also feel that if you have multiple picks back to back then you should get the entire time to make both picks (IE we have 3 hours per pick, you pick btb and you should get the whole 6 hours to make both picks)... Its not like picking for them after the first 3 hours is going to speed the draft up

The best option IMO has always been to let them slide as the NFL does, but that's a killer on the commish's who then have to trade each team 1 at a time down the line.

Keep in mind that, while not speeding up the draft, it does hold info from the next team. There might be a situation where the next team has 2 players they like and is going to head to work during the 2nd pick-in-a-row. It's fair for him to know if he's guaranteed 1 of the players or if he might want to trade out.

                      Just an FYI, not debating.

Been involved with time slot drafts and they do not encourage trading. Owners tend to check in at their assigned slots and therefore are too late to respond to trade offers or if they make offers do not always get a good response. The uncertainty of the draft as currently set up provides some encouragement to check the board every now and then. WE CURRENTLY HAVE GREAT TRADE ACTION DURING OUR DRAFT & WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE THAT TO CONTINUE.

With that said, I like keeping a set amount of time per pick but to reduce it from this year.

                        1 - 3.5 hours, 2 - 3 hours, 3 - 2.5 hours, 4 - 2 hours, 5 - 1.5 hours, 6 - 1 hours & 7 - .5 hour

Actually in the other league we had more trading because of it IMO...

As for letting the players slide, the new utility allows that I believe... We have used that in other leagues and when the team is ready to select the draft can be stopped, the selection made and then go back to the other team that was on the clock

I don't want to see this. I like having the league file updated regularly during a draft, and this would stop that.

This has been the slowest draft in league history. Mark it down. The changes in the draft times are good. I think that if you miss a pick, time reduced by 50%. You miss the 2nd pick, you go on "scout pick" automatically. this way our draft won't be held up.
