A Trivial Bytes Preview of Imperial Bowl IX

Just last season, there were two teams than many thought would be paired off in a “grand daddy of them all” championship bowl game. Both of these teams were only one game away from perfect regular seasons … and at 15-1, both were poised to take no prisoners until they met each other in the Imperial Bowl. After a first round bye, Norfolk, the 15-1 wonder from the AC, lost to Murfreesboro right off the bat in the second round. After its bye, Lawrence, the 15-1 wonder from the NC, easily advanced versus Lansing but stumbled against the eventual IFL Champion, the Vermont Mountaineers. The game of the century was not to be.

 One year later, and now these same two teams are now poised to settle up on what was set up in 2010.

The Lawrence Phantoms and the Norfolk Vipers are two teams that are very similar in nature. Both feature high profile quarterbacks, a haunting running attack, and knock-out blows delivered by their receiving corps. Both also feature stubborn and unsung defenses. Points allowed in the regular season: Phantoms #1, Vipers #3. Total Yards Allowed: Phantoms #1, Vipers #6. And on special teams, Lawrence’s Dana Glover and Norfolk’s Percy Brenner are wild cards that can change any game with the touch of the ball.

Both are lead by coaches that have been to the big one before. Lawrence’s Howie Mooberry will try to bring the Phantoms their first crown. He succeeded in doing that for Norfolk in 2006 and 2008. But Mooberry was let go earlier this season by the Norfolk organization in a very controversial move and with one year left on his contract. Norfolk replaced Mooberry with Tyrell Nichols from St. Louis. Nichols is also no stranger to the Imperial Bowl either as he led St. Louis to a championship in 2005. Mooberry has the all-time IFL record with 116 wins and 45 losses. Nichols is third with 96 wins and 62 losses. But the media are feasting on the fact that Mooberry is facing his old team that canned him. He refuses to make this a focus … but the fact of the matter, it is the elephant in the room.

The two teams did face each other in the regular season. Lawrence handily destroyed the Viper swagger by a score of 38-6 and even though the teams have the same type of weapons, the previous meeting leaves several questions unanswered. How could Norfolk be that vulnerable? Can Lawrence concoct another brilliant plan against a team that is making an unprecedented 4th trip to the Imperial Bowl? When it is all said and done, it just might come down to who has the ball in their hands last - Tobias Stanfield or Harold “Finger” Lozier? Both signal callers lead the IFL with 4th quarter comebacks.

Make your prediction and tune in on Sunday for a great match-up when Imperial Bowl IX kicks off.

I've thought Lawrence was the team to beat since the beginning, and was rather shocked that they stumbled a bit during the season--especially with Newark's remarkable year.

Nothing's changed tho...I'm still thinking Jester is motivated to win this one.

Great write-up TB! I was unaware of this little tidbit...

There is at least one major area that the Phantoms are slacking in and the Viper's not so. I noticed it about a week ago and I'm hoping to pick r00k's brain after the game on that one.

What kind of expectations have I built up when 12-4 is stumbling?!?

        hehe Thanks, Argot!

          Now you have me intrigued.

Loving the hype on the game ... and don't mind being an underdog since we have been one in each of the playoff games thus far.

              Jester ...

gameplan is in and I don't plan on revisiting it.

I posted in the other thread thoughts on gametime.

The ball is in your court ... at least until you kick it off to Percy who intends to run it back.

I will continue to monitor the forum to see what decision is made on when the dismantling of the Phantoms is to commence.

You're as mixed up on your sports (court->kick off???) as you are on the outcome, my friend.

Oooh that's going to be some embarrassment to wash off getting lambasted twice by the Phantoms in the same season!

Yea ... we are using that game to get fired up ... but it seems that you might have a bit more at risk in that you don't want to diasappoint all of your fans in the poll ... almost a 2-1 ratio ... watch out for the oke: "finger."

damn ... wish Jeff would just get this thing going ... this wait is killing me.

I"ll have you know that the Phantom Phans have been toughened through 8 seasons of disappointment!

As for the wait I'm enjoying the anticipation but like night games so whenever it's simmed is cool with me.

Another important stat that Norfolk/Lawrence lead the IFL in: sack yards by defense. Carter Dietz, WLB is worrying me and making me wonder if I can get more sack production out of Wally Stanton.

TRIVIA BYTES IMPERIAL BOWL GAMEDAY HISTORY GUIDE

There have been many great players, outstanding teams, scheming GM's and horrible calls from the game engine, but there are only eight champs with another to be crowned soon. Hats off to:

Imperial Bowl I ... Orlando Pirates

Imperial Bowl II ... Madison Demon

Imperial Bowl III ... St. Louis Cardinals

Imperial Bowl IV ... Norfolk Vipers

Imperial Bowl V ... Little Rock Toads

Imperial Bowl VI ... Norfolk Vipers

Imperial Bowl VII ... Hartford Grizzlies

Imperial Bowl VIII ... Vermont Mountainers

                        Imperial Bowl IX ... :?:

 The American and National Conference each have four representatives.

                        Largest margin of victory

                        Narrowest margin of victory:

 Norfolk 33-32 over Oakland (Imperial Bowl IV)

                        The first three MVP's were a RB, a K and a DE

 Louie Maldanado (Imperial Bowl III)

A QB has been named MVP for the last five games:

 Sammy Mathews (Imperial Bowl VIII)

There is one occasion where a losing team also had the MVP:
 Sammy Mathews (Iowa City in Imperial Bowl VIII)

There has only been one time when a Bowl Champ was not a division winner:
 Vermont the #5 seed in the NC in Imperial Bowl VIII.

The #1 seed in a conference has won the Bowl three times.

 Little Rock (Imperial Bowl V)
                        Norfolk (Imperial Bowl VI)

 The other four bowl games were won by a #2 or #3 seed. This year's game features a #1 seed (Lawrence) and a #4 seed (Norfolk).

:!: Including this year's game, Norfolk leads the league with four Bowl appearances. There are three teams with two appearances: Lawrence, Little Rock and Madison.

 There remains twenty IFL franchises that have not earned a trip to a Bowl game.

Your former head coach has led the Toads to three straight division titles, so in a way you are part of history.
