  • Offseason Scheduling (or..."Are We There Yet?!?")

ok, i think this year's FA has run it's course. outside of the Colella news/fiasco/unfortunate circumstance there's been nothing of worth in this pool. can we just skip to the draft now?

also, can we vote on if we should be allowed to vote on the following:

every start of the offseason when we get a look at who is in the FA pool, we vote on whether to have a "long" FA stage or a "short" FA stage. jeff can create 2 different schedules, if there's a lot of goodies in the pool we can elect to have the schedule we had this current offseason, but if there's doodies in the pool and nothing really worth bidding on then we can vote to just have a short FA stage, or sim multiple stages at once to speed through the FA stage and devote more time to the draft. basically no need to have this elaborate FA stage where we sim each stage one nite at a time just to bid on scrubs. we can at least vote on it, if the majority see there's enough of worth to have a long (or normal) length FA stage then we can do that. but if we mutually agree no need to waste all that time we should just move things along and get to the draft.

yes, i wrote "doodies in the pool".

I need as many stages as possible to remember to do all of my rookie interviews

I am not much for skipping stages. They are there for a reason.

surely, but if there isn't much worth bidding on no need to waste so much time on so many stages. did we really need to break FA stage 1 into 10 separate days? was there really that much worth bidding on (again, outside of Colella, but that won't happen every year). if it wasn't for Colella this would have been one of the most uneventful FA periods of all time. just saying maybe sim stages 1-5 on their own days, then maybe sim 5 or 6 day blocks at a time if there is total crap to bid on.

I don't see that the quality of the players (which is different to each GM) has anything to do with the pace. For those only watching FA it's certainly more entertaining with big names but even without them you're still looking for players that you want, making offers, winning some & losing some, rinse & repeat.

And it's hard to say this without sounding like a dick but I'd honestly say the same thing if I'd missed the playoffs: The playoff teams don't get the breather that non-playoff teams get in the schedule. Despite handing over control to GWB last season I was still following the IFL and after 8 (?) straight seasons and the last two deep in the playoffs I'm enjoying this time away right now.

There are always FA's to bid on. Just because there are no huge names doesn't mean we should throw on the hyperdrive.

FA isn't the only thing going on. I appreciate the extra time to negotiate contracts. It is usually a 6-7 stage deal for me. Also I prefer to interview after I know who I have gotten in FA in order to focus the interviews more appropiately. Interviews are also a multiple day deal for me too. Definately ok with the current speed.

I don't believe changing the schedule around in relation to the FA crop is the way to go. How would we even come to a consensus on that?

I considered combining a few of the last stages, but decided not to. My goal was to have the draft start on the weekend and this allowed me to do that.

While there was not a lot of good players in FA this year, I think the breakdown of the stages was perfect. IF you acquire a player, then that changes your strategy on the offers you made other players. It also makes you rethink your draft. For instance, I got a decent TE in free agency. So that ONE player also makes me consider my draft order. I wasn't, but say I was going to draft a TE in the second. Well I just picked one up so my need drops off the chart.

Anyway, the point was, every single stage is important. I don't believe at all you can just combine a bunch of stages. I think the FA time line is perfect. There is always some way you can improve your team. Even if the guy isn't a stud. I needed a 3rd TE who could run block. I picked him up in the later rounds. While not a starter, he will be critical to my team in goal line and 3rd and short situations. It's the little things that can make a huge difference. A long FA period allows the owners time to add those players who can help.

Jave did a good job of both robbing me and heading me off at the pass during this FA. Took all of my "little things" to smack some lipstick on that pig of a thing called Oakland.

Every year someone yelps and asks for the league to "hurry up."

Every year the response from the other GMs is a resounding "NO."

Can we put a sticky on the top of the page to let everyone know the pace of the schedule is what makes this league so strong? We have owners all over the globe and to speed up the process would make it difficult for some to stay active and informed.

The facts, though interesting enough, are irrelevant.

Actually, the majority of free agents I spoke with were desperate to get offers from anywhere BUT Lawrence. Can ya blame em? What the hell is there to do in Lawrence? Bout the biggest thing going is the local blockbuster and pizza hut. Yea, theres a fun saturday night!

this implies you actually think about your strategy which we all know is a damn lie.
