A TRIVIA BYTES SPECIAL REVIEW
First year Head Coach Brent Brigham's rookie season record is 8-8. That was good enough to win the NC West and to bring the Vancourver Killer Whales to their first ever playoff visit. Do you think he'll keep his job?
The Killer Whales has the talent to play with anybody ... just ask Little Rock and Anchorage. A problem during the season was that on any given Sunday, that talent forgot how to play. No matter for now, because they managed to keep a nose in front of Oakland and voila -- a dance card to the playoffs.
The Whales focus their offense around 2nd year QB Xavier Armstong and all purpose running back J.B. Lincoln. Lincoln's credentials speak for themself -- 7th in the league for all-purpose yards. The Whales defense has an above average pass rush and will keep the opposing quarterback off balance. If that does not materialize, the Whales usually have a long day. On the injury front, DE Alfred Dunlop is questionable. He leads the franchise in hurries and blocked passes.
Vermont is a team that had the talent to play with anybody too ... just ask Lansing and Madison, the other two teams in the NC Wild Card games. But the finger of fate hit and rookie phenom RB Andy Crawford, SE Dennis Bakker, and P Wes Reid were lost to season ending injuries. That is some serious loss of talent, but the team has been resilient. QB Virgil Sepulveda, also injured during the season, is healthy and ready to carry his team and figure TE Quentin Logan to get more involved in the offense. But the Mountainers will have to count on their defense which was #2 in producing turnovers, thanks to DE Shawn Hernandez' leadership. He alone has had 11.5 sacks, 33 hurries, and 3 forced fumbles. FS Bryant Gattis Gattis anchors the secondary. The defense allowed the second lowest number of points in the National Conference, right behind Little Rock. The key recent injury is CB Alonzo Lake.
Head Coach Rico Sprouse has now taken Vermont to the playoffs three times and the Mountainers are still looking for their first playoff win ... guess what, so is Vancouver. Should be a good game.
Let the guys know how you feel about the game.
