  • NC WILDCARD: Vermont at Vancouver

    A TRIVIA BYTES SPECIAL REVIEW

First year Head Coach Brent Brigham's rookie season record is 8-8. That was good enough to win the NC West and to bring the Vancourver Killer Whales to their first ever playoff visit. Do you think he'll keep his job?

The Killer Whales has the talent to play with anybody ... just ask Little Rock and Anchorage. A problem during the season was that on any given Sunday, that talent forgot how to play. No matter for now, because they managed to keep a nose in front of Oakland and voila -- a dance card to the playoffs.

The Whales focus their offense around 2nd year QB Xavier Armstong and all purpose running back J.B. Lincoln. Lincoln's credentials speak for themself -- 7th in the league for all-purpose yards. The Whales defense has an above average pass rush and will keep the opposing quarterback off balance. If that does not materialize, the Whales usually have a long day. On the injury front, DE Alfred Dunlop is questionable. He leads the franchise in hurries and blocked passes.

Vermont is a team that had the talent to play with anybody too ... just ask Lansing and Madison, the other two teams in the NC Wild Card games. But the finger of fate hit and rookie phenom RB Andy Crawford, SE Dennis Bakker, and P Wes Reid were lost to season ending injuries. That is some serious loss of talent, but the team has been resilient. QB Virgil Sepulveda, also injured during the season, is healthy and ready to carry his team and figure TE Quentin Logan to get more involved in the offense. But the Mountainers will have to count on their defense which was #2 in producing turnovers, thanks to DE Shawn Hernandez' leadership. He alone has had 11.5 sacks, 33 hurries, and 3 forced fumbles. FS Bryant Gattis Gattis anchors the secondary. The defense allowed the second lowest number of points in the National Conference, right behind Little Rock. The key recent injury is CB Alonzo Lake.

Head Coach Rico Sprouse has now taken Vermont to the playoffs three times and the Mountainers are still looking for their first playoff win ... guess what, so is Vancouver. Should be a good game.

Let the guys know how you feel about the game.

... and obviously with too much time on one\'s hands ...

A more telling stat regarding Lincoln is that he's #1 in yards from scrimmage (AP yards do him a disservice since he isn't a return man). Vermont should win this game though. Stop Lincoln and force the inconsistent Armstrong to beat you.

This should be an Oakland/Vermont preview, as Vancouver will be smashed. Be that as it may, I must still root for the Whales(gag). Enjoy the title because you can be assured that Oakland and SLC doesn't sleep for long.

His bars sucked then and they still suck now. I have to believe it's more about the system.

he averaged over 5 ypc with the Heroes and racked up a ton of yards and tds as a backup, and nearly led the league in rushing with the Whales. how is that about the system? what he's the league's most explosive rusher. he's got home run hitting power. so you can't use him to pound it up the middle. he's got speed and breakaway abilities.

Voted for Coder and his mash unit Mountainers.

Vancouver is a sentimental choice & I congratulate them on winning a division crown. According to the power ranking in the game, they had the easiest schedule in the league. After checking their win schedule, it didn't persuade me to change my vote.

Just wanted to note (and I'm not picking on you, trust me) that the records listed in the power rankings aren't the best indicator of strength-of-schedule. First off, they take your own team's wins and losses into account when determining your opponents' records (when they should NOT). That is a pretty big factor when you are comparing a 2-14 SLC team to a 15-1 NFK or LAW team (worse teams will have "harder" schedules and vice versa). Also, the more accepted SOS formula is 2/3 your opponents' records and 1/3 your opponents' opponents' records.

Just wanted to mention that so everyone knew. It's sort of disappointing that Jim lowballed that feature, especially since it's used as a draft order tiebreaker.

Gah, I'm pretty sure I want to figure out the "true" SOS and compare now. Dammit!

Jeff ... dang, learn something new every day. I figured there was some type of formula but did not have any idea of what that was and guess I was too lazy to try to find out. Your comments make good sense. And no, I am not going to try to figure the real one out, even though I do have a piqued interest now. Thanks for jumping in.

Heh, Vancouver's "true" SOS wasn't much different. 8)
