The key is gaurenteed money. . .in other words, the bonus speaks the loudest. I think that loyalty plays a role in counteracting a big bonus, but isn't always a big factor.

Latest example: RB John Feliciano. There were two offers about $2.6M. He signed for $1.3M with no bonus (average loyalty).

I don't think I'll bother giving offers anymore, when the ex-team does...
Actually I do. Aaron McKinzie my QB signed with Vancouver for 1.1 mill for a year, when I was offering 780,000.
Only example I've got, but it's there.

I signed like a dozen or more, course they were all pretty much depth and camp fodder.

If you don't want to lose a guy, dont' let him hit the free agency market. Resign him the year before FA or tag him.

As for signing other teams stars, I've had very good success by cranking the bonus up and the salary down in SP. This is my first MP league, so all I have is what I saw over the last couple weeks.

Pedigo, I did have the biggest contract and his loyalty is very low and play for winner is average. In SP, I had a term for this type of player: Merc

James Clayton has an average loyalty and strong wants winner. He signed a nickel and dime 1 year deal with me when other teams offered him more. I dont' have a good term for these guys, but they are very easy to resign during FA, and they usually ask for too much in the prior season. Clayton asked for 3 years at about 1.3 mil per year last year.

The other type I have is Homesteaders, these guys will take just about anything to stay where they are. Usually have a high loyalty rate. In SP, I once offered a homsteader a book of coupons for 6 years, he turned down a 10mil bonus.

I guess the point is that you have to pay real close attention to all the numbers, not just skills, when trying to sign a player. This includes Agent rating, which can be a real pain in the ass. Ever seen a so-so kicker ask for a blockbuster contract? It's his agent.

I havn't figured out if intelligence is a factor in FA offers, but it could. If you have a dumb guy and a bad agent, you might be able to get away with murder. Of course a dumb guy might overinflate his status and ask for rediculous amount of money. But like I've said, I've never done research on this
