  • question about the new "injury settlement"

OK, so in the case of [ifl]Chris Sanborn[/ifl], he will accept an injury settlement of $1.73mil
So when I release him I get the...

"if you release this player you'll save $1.73mil in costs this season. Salary cap will reduce by 0. His contract will count $370k against this year's cap and $1.73mil against next year's cap"

He's on the last year of his contract with a base salary of $1.73 and $370k of bonus
What is the bonus to cutting this guy right now if he's going to count a base salary against my cap?

    What's this injury settlement stuff?

I've got 4 years of contract hanging on Tommy Johnson who is out with a career ending injury. He is willing to renegotiate for a lower salary, but is asking for guaranteed bonus money???? My understanding is that I can't even release him. So I could renegotiate, and get a lower salary for the next four years, but risk him retiring and taking a big cap hit.

    Any suggestions???

you can't release an injured player until their last year of contract, so I say let it run its course and dont give more bonus.

In your case there is no point, but usually the injury settlement will be for much less than their current salary.

If I'm understanding correctly, this is more of a means to get rid of roster fodder after preseason has concluded. I don't think you can put probable guys on IR anymore, so it comes into play when you need to get rid of a nasty mofo.

            Food for thought.

If I renegotiate Johnson's contract. I save 890,000 this year.

If he doesn't retire next year, I save another 900,000 the next year, but if he retires I save 1.2 M but have 1.4 M in dead contract space. And have to eat 1 M for 2012.

If he doesn't retire in 2012, I save another 700,000, but if he retires then I have 500,000 in dead cap space, and another 500,000 to eat the final year of his contract.

            Decisions, decisions...

yeah, I don't think you can IR someone unless they are out. I have an injured guy in IHOF making 900K that I can release for 150K, so probably stuff like that.
