Phantoms have a boatload of guys (all but Kley I think) willing to renegotiate to lower contracts. This is absolutely ridiculous! :evil:

What's your definition of a lower contract? Just lower in the current season? I bet they want more bonus money than ever before.

Naturally any new contract will bring about new bonus money. I have many players that are just taking less money - in each year of the contract. Since others are seeing different results maybe I just got lucky.

i have several players who, including signing bonus, are simply asking for a less overall contract. i allow it.

Less yes. But what I'm seeing is guys replacing base salary with a lot more bonus.

For example:

2060k - 1720k = 3780k
2620 - 1720k = 4340k

ASKING:

580k - 1720k + 750k = 3050k
1310k - 1720 +750k = 3780k

Cheaper overall, but now more of a gamble with there being more guaranteed money.

if it's guys i'm planning on keeping then it don't make no difference to me. i'm not adding in a TON of signing bonus in any of these deals. just decreasing base salary and increading guaranteed money.

I think that if players were signed before to major contracts, they will be willing to take a pay cut now if more is guaranteed in signing bonuses. The two negatives are:

1) dead cap space if the guy gets hurt or suffers a ratings decline and you have to cut him

2) reduced flexibility because trading the player gives you a big hit

When I took over the team, I ran into this problem with Seymour Carter. Either the computer or the previous owner gave him a ginormous contract over like 7 years, and every year I was faced with the decision to have him take up an abnormal amount of cap space, or give him skatey eight million dollars in more bonus money. Of course, he got hurt, took a huge ratings hit, and I ended up getting screwed by dead cap space one year.

I'm not gonna go player by player down my roster but I'll say that for a defending conference champion it shouldn't be this easy to not only keep everyone but (apparently) free up major cap space for new acquisitions.

...I will say though, some players are asking for a lot less than I thought they would.

Patch 70ish OLB 3 yrs $7M (only played in ten games, but still...)
Woods 90ish DT 4 yrs $26M
Denny 50/70ish OT 5 yrs $13M

Mules were able to get a couple of more years on Peterson, Fortune and Mckenzie (I think). Peterson has a "bubble" year next season that might cause some CAP issues at 9m, but I was able to get him signed for a couple more years at a decent price. McKenzie signed a much more reasonable contract, for more bonus money of course. Really glad I tagged Monroe as he signed a failry decent 2 year deal, probably his last :x

Sometimes ya gotta pay the bonuses to control the CAP. I agree IF the player is in the long range plans then the bonus is not a huge issue.

FWIW I don't think I resorted to any CAP Out offers this year. First season in a while that could be said. Those are the killer ones as far as future CAP goes, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Oh yeah Mules had one or two guys willing to take modest base pay cuts, one of the young LBs if I remember correctly. Don't have my notes in front of me now. But most of them were Bonus for base pay deals that only favor the Mules if the contract is seen to the end so same ol' same ol' as far as I can tell.

i don't ever do Cap Out offers. all you're doing is delaying the inevitable. you're taking one year of relief for several years of hell. not worth it.

and there ARE instances where it makes sense to replace base pay with signing bonus, when the renogotiation is like this:

Current Contract:
Year 1: 4 million base/1.2 million bonus
Year 2: 5.8 million base/1.2 million bonus
Year 3: 6 million base/1.2 million bonus

Renogotiated Contract:
Year 1: 1.5million base/3 million bonus
Year 2: 2.8 million base/3 million bonus
Year 3: 3 million base/3 million bonus

so not only am i getting that relief in year one, over the life of the deal i'm paying the guy less overall than i would if i didn't renogotiate. we're not talking about doing this for every single playing mind you, just the ones that i know i'd be keeping the full 3 years anyway..

don't forget though, that trading a guy leaves you with his bonus against the cap even though he's no longer on your team.

So in example 2:

Renogotiated Contract:
Year 1: 1.5million base/3 million bonus
Year 2: 2.8 million base/3 million bonus
Year 3: 3 million base/3 million bonus

If you trade this guy after season 2, you're only dealing his 3 million, not the entire 6. You're still responsible for those 3 million bonus dollars against your cap.
