The rebuilding Horsetooth Ogres made it official today: they’ll select Florida wide receiver Buddy Lane with the first overall pick in the 2074 IFL Draft, set for Friday, November 14 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific.

Lane, a 6'0", 203-pound burner out of Gainesville, turned heads at the Combine with a 4.29 forty, 10'10" broad jump, and elite agility testing.

The Horsetooth Ogres made a bold draft-day leap, sending picks 2.1 and 3.1 to the Las Vegas Hookers in exchange for 1.23 and 4.23, all to secure Louisville tight end Javier Mathis, one of the top pass-catching options among this year’s big men.

Mathis arrives with a compact, powerful build at 6'0", 246 lbs, plus a strong athletic base—4.72 in the forty, 30 bench reps, and excellent short-area competitiveness. But it’s his receiving ability that made him the Ogres’ target. He brings reliable hands, clean adjustments to the ball, and enough route polish to be a steady chain-mover right away. While he’s not built for downfield seams, he consistently wins underneath and thrives in traffic.

The bonus: he’s a far more complete tight end than typical receiving specialists. Mathis is a sturdy, disciplined blocker and carries real value on special teams, giving Horsetooth an every-down contributor from day one.

By climbing the board to grab Mathis, the Ogres add a quarterback-friendly option and a versatile middle-of-the-field weapon—exactly the kind of piece a rebuilding offense can grow around.

Ogres Add Backfield Quickness, Select RB Eric Diaz at 1.28

The Horsetooth Ogres continued their offensive overhaul late in the first round, selecting Hampton running back Eric Diaz with pick 1.28. After opening the draft with Florida WR Buddy Lane at 1.1 and trading up to grab Louisville TE Javier Mathis at 1.23, the Ogres closed out Round 1 by securing their third offensive playmaker of the night.

Diaz brings a balanced frame at 5'10", 208 lbs., along with a 4.45 forty and strong agility numbers that show up consistently on film. He’s at his best working in space—slipping tackles, bouncing outside, and giving the offense a bit more perimeter juice. His quickness and elusiveness provide a different flavor to the backfield and fit neatly with the team’s push toward speed and versatility.

He’s not a heavy inside grinder and still refining blitz pickup, but he shows enough toughness between the tackles to keep drives on schedule. As a receiver, he’s reliable on short throws and checkdowns, giving Horsetooth another usable option on passing downs.
