HARTFORD, CT - The boys in green have been painful to watch this season and they don’t look like they will be turning the corner in the foreseeable future. We are already five games into the season and the Whalers have only managed to score a miserable 49 points this season, which gives them the dubious distinction of being the worst scoring offense in the league. The defense has been acceptable as they transition to more of a zone blitz style rather than the standard 4-3 we have seen in previous seasons. The defense has had trouble giving up yardage this season, which can be attributed to the fact that the offense has been unable to move the football and give their defense a much needed rest. There have been bright spots, particularly on defense, with rookie Tyler Archuleta putting up solid numbers at corner and Richard Guthrie chasing down anything that moves at Safety. However, anything good we have seen on defense, has been eclipsed by the absolute pile of garbage that is the Whalers offense. Much of that blame has been shouldered by one man, James Brackens.

Brackens has been a more than capable starter in the Imperial, but hasn’t broken his way into that elite Quarterback tier and brought the Whalers back to the promise land. In the first five games this season, Brackens has 945 yards and 2 TDs to go along with 3 INTs and a disgusting 67.3 QBR. As atrocious as this season has been for Brackens, can we really put all the blame on him? He has been sacked an alarming 21 times this season with another 14 knockdowns to add insult to injury. Surely the offensive line shares a good portion of the blame here? With Craig Codeke finally coming back from injury to reclaim his spot at LT, things are sure to get a bit better for an aging offensive line that has been under the gun all season long. However, it is going to take a miracle to patch together this line and stop the sinking ship. Baring that miracle, the Whalers could have a lot a thinking to do in the off season and that will all start with if they believe Brackens is their future.

Unfortunately for both of us at least half the teams in the league (if not more) want either an upgrade at QB or a replacement for their ageing starter so any decent QB prospects in the next few drafts will get picked early.

There is hope for us all though given how well Argot has done in Arizona with his backups: 70/94 for 625 yards 5TD and 1INT 105.14 QBR. My scouts have these two guys rated as 16/21 and 8/27 and it's not like they're tossing the ball to Jerry Rice. It says a lot about how important system, cohesion and chemistry are to a QBs performance.
