One team up against the cap for next year is the Columbia Fire. Though they can easily get under with a reworking of a contract or two, they still have several starters that remain unsigned.

“Right now we are taking things one day at a time,” said GM sovstar, “A lot depends on how our season fares.”

The Fire went up against the cap this year in hopes of making a run for a championship, but an early injury to last year’s 1st team All-League QB Julian Cartagena has put those plans into jeopardy. If they fail to make the playoffs, changes are sure to be made.

Some of those changes are sure to be in the offensive line, where starting C Vern Ribeiro and starting RT Stephen Rowden are impending FA’s. The Fire saw this coming, spending third and fifth round picks on tackles in last year’s draft. Those young tackles however have seen a combined three plays so far, and Fire management is unsure if they can play or not.

One player that is almost certain not to be going anywhere though is S Preston Larios. Sources high in Columbia’s management say that the team has been impressed by his contribution to the defense so far this year.

Nice job, Rumor Mill. Don't I sound like a real life GM with that cliche I tossed in there?

Burlington could be interesting to watch. . .

I don't think Steiner or Chung will hit the market.

Collins and and Daniel will more than likely get tagged

I think the offseason will be a bit light again this year. . . can't wait though

Rumblings out of Oakland are that the Assassins are disappointed in the production out of number two overall pick Wesley Connell. Despite being one of the highest rated RB's in the league, Connell has managed only 4.00 yards per carry and has scored only twice. The notriously fickle Oakland management has hinted that Connell could be on the market at the end of the season. With his current contract, Connell would be extremely valuable to any team that decides to make a run for him. However, with the $9M cap hit trading Connell would incur, Oakland may decide to hang on to him, a la Salt Lake City and Tart.

A good number of the free agents that the Rumor Mill posted earlier belong to Burlington, and with being so close to the cap they are having problems resigning their veterans before they go free next season. In fact, each of the players listed are asking for raises that would count against this year’s cap.

What that means is that there is a good chance that all but one (whoever is franchised) of those players will be hitting the open market. But with close to $18 million in cap room next year, Burlington does not figure to go let their players go without a fight.

“Will we lose some of our players? Yes. Will be aggressive resigning them? That all depends,” commented Bolts GM in a recent press conference, “That gives us some flexibility, but we are not going to overspend on anyone and that includes All-League WR Max Brown and anyone else that may try to overestimate their league value.”

That final statement may be a slight stab at WR Joseph Bailey, who despite having a statistically disappointing career in the SFL so far is asking for a deal that would worth over $5M a year.

Sources close to the Power organization say that another player on our list, DE Jack Hazzard, might be available in the off-season, but will most likely not hit the open market. Sources in Pittsburgh claim that the team is exasperated in negotiations with the impending restricted free agent. If the power can get a deal in place before the time to place the franchise tag, Hazzard could be wearing a different uniform next season. Hazzard is reportedly asking for a 4 year extension worth an additional $18M.

Newark is among the oldest teams in the league and boasts an $88M cap number next year. Their poor performance this year means that the team might be disassembled next year, and team sources indicate that QB Chris Chaplin and DE Justin Jones might be part of the purge. Together they give a nearly $20M cap hit. Chaplin has been somewhat a disappointment in the Bulldog offense, with a QB rating less than 80 the past two years. Jones however is among the best at his position, getting close to double digits in pass rush percentage.

If Newark goes into full rebuilding mode, also look for other veterans such as MLB Persaud to be shopped around.

SLC In Need of Another Tart Suitor?

Salt Lake City starting RB Tart was being openly shopped around right before the trade deadline, and the best offer was rumored to be two first round draft picks and a starting caliber RB. League sources indicate that the team to make that offer was Newark, and some think that the Bulldogs may have interest in Tart again during the off-season, especially since the team has expressed a desire to add a playmaker to their at times anemic offense. However, Newark has taken steps recently to try and extend the contract of RB Jerry Daugherty (the back thought to be included in Newark’s offer to SLC), which has many people speculating that they no longer have interest in Tart, and may instead be looking to a more long-term solution.

Cleveland quietly resigns K Davis to long term deal

The Cleveland Clawz quietly resigned K Davis to a multi-year deal. With a team so depended on winning close low scoring games it was something that needed to be done. DT Collins will recieve the expected franchise tag next year but will possibly still be shopped if he contract demands don't fit in our payroll plan.
